  • BTW, her viewing is on July 29th, in Long Beach, Ca. My cousin Gigi has all the details. Also, her funeral is on July, 30th. I know it's at a church in LA . Will give you more details tomorrow. :)

  • @Lbozman59: Good Morning! Thanks for the info. One of my friends, who has been assisting the family with a few things, emailed me the details yesterday. I'm hoping that I'll be able to make it out there next week.

  • Thank you so much Rowoches. My aunt was very dear to me and I will miss her very much. She's with Jesus now! She was at the nursing home where I work when she passed. She was born Novembver 14, 1929. :) To my cousin Gigi and Chellette, May GOD be with both of you. Love you!! :)

  • @Lbozman59: You're most definitely welcomed! Thanks for your comment, as well as her full birthday. Now I can add it to the Memorial tribute I did for her! May God Bless you and your family during this time and always!

  • That's my Aunt. She just died Friday, June 17th 2011. I will miss her dearly.

  • She sounds much older than she looks

  • Is She still alive?

  • As far as I know, yes, she is.

  • Okay

I presume all of the later Ward singers are still alive like

    Malvelyn Statham

    Viola Crowley

    Alice Houston

    Adele Schoffield

    Madeline Thompson

    Agnes Jackson

  • Yes, the ones you mentioned are still around...however, there are several who have passed also.

  • Have u done a tribute to Adele?

  • No, I haven't done a tribute to Adele Schofield. Unfortunately, there aren't any recorded songs where she was the lead singer. As a little part of history, Adele was a member of the Gertrude Ward Singers, though she did fill in from time to time with the Clara Ward Singers. On the Gertrude Ward Singers' version off "Joshua Fit The Battle of Jericho," you can hear Adele Schofield hitting notes at the end. I posted that song a while back.

  • this is gigi, and that lovely with a voice of an angel and a heart of gold...i say to be bless to be at her side at time of death, you are with your Lord at last--even though i miss you, love you ....sad but glad u suffer no more

was truely God sent to me and I thank you dear Lord given her to me...........

Please watch over us....Mom/My dear Grandma/Great-grandma

  • @Rowoches Voyla H [Crowley] Bynum, age 81 who passed away Friday evening, Jun 17, 2011

  • @Luckeestryke: Thanks for the info. I learned a while back that her born name was "Voyla," but once she used "Viola" with the Ward Singers. I also didn't know her last name. Thanks soooo much for your reply! I don't know if you've seen it, but I've also done a "Memorial" posting for Ms. Crowley.

  • Go 'head, Vi!

I didn't know that was her leading "Brigher Day." I've had that album (The Gospel Soul of Clara Ward..) for 36 years, and I still do NOT know what they are singing 'cept for "tomorrow will be a brighter day." (My Aunt Melba thought they were saying, "Won't be nobody there.")

  • The music is kinda loud on "A Brighter Day." LOL! I like that...."won't be nobody there"...(smile). I'm glad I read your reply before I left for the library. I'll upload the song, b/c I do know the words, atleast a majority of them.

  • Bless you, Bro! I want you to know not knowing th words didn't keep me from dancing. I did a lot more of than before I weight 2 hundred fort...three....thirt.....

Ok, who's leading "Drinking Of the Wine?" That's NOT Agnes cause that's her doing the phrase, "...to mee eet the King!" (Ooo I love that girl! Have you heard her do "There'll Be Rest In the Sweet By and By?" Break out all yo windows, baby!)

  • I've just uploaded "A Brighter Day" and I added the lyrics in the MORE INFO area. Check them out whenever you have an opportunity.

No, that's not Agnes leading "Drinking Of The Wine." It's a guy that's leading it. I was told that it's either Charles May or a guy that used to sing with Charles May.

Yes, I've heard Agnes do "There'll Be Rest In The Sweet By And By," but I think I like Jessie Tucker's version better, but Agnes did do a good job.

  • YOU PLAYIN' WITH ME!!! That's a dude??? I am too threw... too chunked to throw!

  • No, it's a guy....LOL!

  • Boy, shut up and shoot me! He goes up higher than Agnes; it's not as clear, but hey! he's up thar!!!!

  • Lawd, I'm over here dying! Yeah, he could sing tho! Lol!

  • Thanks so much for this tribute to Voila. She played for our church (Mt. Zion Baptist) in Columbus, Ohio in the fifties and early sixties. She could tear up piano!!!

  • You're most definitely welcomed! And yes, she could play a mean piano!!

  • Every since Travelling shoes, i have loved this lil lady!

  • Thanks!Dewayne, Also did ya'll know that the great Thelma Bumpess is the lady leading the song The Great Judgment Morning by the Ward Singers in the 1960's.She led some others on the same named L.P.by the group.

  • Surely did....including "Don't Let This Harvest Pass," "Let The Train Roll Easy," "In The Morning When I Rise," "Too Close To Heaven," and a few others.

I was told that Thelma Bumpess was a very nice lady and that she had a group of her own before joining the Ward Singers. Her group was the originator of "Meeting Tonight," and it inspired Clara Ward so much, she adopted it into her very own repetoire.

  • I was told that Shirley Caesar was in her group before she joined The Caravans, i wonder if that is true!

  • I don't know if Shirley was in Thelma's group, but I do know that Shirley Caeser was a Ward Singer for a blink second. Many people don't know that and they don't wanna believe it, but she was.

  • I had heard that before, bout Shirley being a Ward Singer... but yeah I was listening to some old school program and the person who was running it said that a young Shirley Caesar was singing was her, on atleast 1 or 2 sides that her group cut.

  • Correction: Shirley was not a Ward Singer. Back in the day when all the singers were in concert together, sometimes members from other groups would fill-in for a missing member, and Shirley filled in for a Ward Singer. That's why someone said she was a member of the Clara Ward Singers.

  • How about Cassietta George???

  • One person told me that Cassietta did sing with The Ward Singers for a tiny spell...but I've only heard it from one person.

  • Ahhhhhhhhh....thanks for the correction!

  • Hey!Dewayne..First let me say congrats!Thanx for the post of this song by Viola C.I've went and am now gone on this song PurpleSnowman, did'nt know the sista singing was Viola.Does someone happen to have a photo of Clara Thomas that they could post? Thanx Dewayne.

  • You're welcomed! I do have a picture with Clara Thomas in it, but b/c it's kinda small, you may not be able to see her clearly. I'll try to take a "still shot" from this DVD I have...and I'll post a song that she does.

  • There you go raystar8, you was asking. That's Viola Crowley leading. I used to wonder who was singing this song. Now I know. Thanks Dewayne. Thanks for inviting me into the room. Snowman!!

  • Alright now! She make me want to start dancing!

  • It's nice to put voices with faces thanks again...
