Because in the movie, Candy's character was a disgraced ex-Olympian who, despite being one of the best bobsledders in the world, ended up hiding bricks in the front of his sled because he was obsessed with winning. He was caught, had his medals stripped, and Kurt was his old coach, so Kurt felt the sting of disgrace, along with that one teammate Larry. Naturally, Kurt was still bitter about it 20 years later.
