As former "law enforcement" as he refers to corrections, you'd think that he would understand the place of firearms as tools that can be used for "good or evil" and that they are not some tool of the devil that cause otherwise perfectly upstanding kids to suddenly become murderers. In any rural setting, particularly in the period that they are recreating, law enforcement is not going to be there immediately to save you. You must take the well-being of your family into your own hands.
The Brooks are great - lovely, thoughtful people. The Clune man is a scary frustrated dickweed, and the Glenn woman needs a punch in the face. (That would be very authentic for the period, given that she is a loud mouthed nagging aggressive old hag.)
Actually, where I am, we still treat guns and shooting much like they did in the 1800's. Kids go hunting with their parents, adults hunt for food, and it's very normal here. I shot competitively on a rifle team from the age of 11 to 18, and a friend of mine won a scholarship from it. At gunshows, there are rifles there for little kids. It's all about creating a healthy respect for life and for guns, supervising, and teaching gun safety. Guns are not bad. -.-
I love this series!! I have to say Karen is a bitch. The Clunes are no angels, but she started wise-cracking on them right from the start. I like Mark Glenn and everybodys favs the Brooks.
