i owned a imp as my first car not far away from the featured imp.Another one owned close by had a 1040 full race roll cadge etc not to be f**ked with it would eat an xr3i of the lights. When fully lit you can hear the sream of a 1040 from miles away this vid is not a bike engine listen close it is distinctly all IMP.
im sorry but this is bike engined you have no idea how much i want it to be imp engined (im building up a 1040 engine for my imp) the proof is where the exhaust comes out
@stueyrandall Thats just the tail pipe, its where the down pipe starts that matters, when you hear the car running up the hill if was a bike it would be running more like 6-7 k and climbing much faster, ending at probably 10k?
@WE5TYES Nope all good imps1966 where pulling 11000rpm second was so wicked down a welsh lane on a stage. I ran a mk2 1966 with twin 40s 998 and all goodies on board. Always got out of car a bath of sweat 100mph downhill in dark with 45 degree left at bottom of hill. I was there
what engine is in this as i have a 1040cc hartwell race engine for a hillman imp and am lookin to get a shell and get one kitted out and i am lookin for what it would sound like
I read about one in a Norwegian magazine, it had the original Coventry Climax engine, dont remember the displacement but it had 120 hp @ over 9000 rpm so its possible..
Back in the early 70s, Group 2 and Special saloon Imps driven by guys like John Homewood, Jeff Ward, Rob Mason and Bill McGovern ran rings around the opposition and frequently beat larger engined cars. in the 1 litre class most championships were won by Imps, and these remarkable and much underrated little cars held the 1 litre lap records at many British circuits.....great days!
No, astonishingly. It's a modified Hillman Imp engine - a 1960's engine based on a 1950's Coventry Climax design. It's a truly wonderful little motor - all alloy, overhead cam with a very over square stroke, hence a phenomenal revving ability even despite it's non-crossflow design. I used to blip my 998 to 12,000rpm on occasion (albeit it had a nitrided crank, block strengthening kit, shot-peened rods, Chessman wedge head, wills rings etc. etc) Aaaah memories!
its bike engined, i have some pictures of it saved somewhere
scrounderful, you can tell by the sound, even a highly tuned 998 running twin 40's has a different tune to it, also the exhaust exits where the head would be ;)
The top speed is probably limited by gearing rather than power - my Davrian, which also has a 1040cc Hillman Imp engine with all the trimmings, tops out at about 110mph as I'm past 9000rpm in 5th gear by then. It's still pulling though and wants to go faster.
Yep, Imps are *cool* -- I had two when I was young. They had a top-speed of about 80mph whereas minis ran out of puff at little over 70. Do you realise that the Imp was actually "inspired" by the 1960 Chevy Corvair? Do a search on YouTube and you'll see how similar the bodywork was. The Corvair even had an all-aluminium engine mounted behind a transaxle, just like the Imp (although it was air-cooled).
I actually had my 875 twin carb imp up over 100 "once". No special mods, just kept my foot down. Not a clue what the revs were. I also had a Corvair. They are uncannily similar, much bigger though.
The only Imp that came with a 998cc engine was the Rally version, more of a homologation special really. Many Imps have since been modified to 915, 930, 998, 1040, 1120 and some even to 1220 spec.
blatantly a bike engined car. the way that thing revs is absolutely barmy. i have been on the imp club since viewing this video with the intention of buying an imp
my father used to own a sunbeam stilleto in the 60's which is the coupe version of this little rocket (obviously with the coventry climax lump though!)
