  • hi! i just got a bone chip removed in my ankle that caused me pain when turn my ankle. So far there is no real surgery pain. Today, my dr checked and he said everything looks good, but there is that same pain when i turn. He says that pain isnt from the bone chip anymore but just normal surgery pain due to incision and getting in there. My question is, did you feel pain a few weeks after surgery...and is he right that it was just normal bruising etc form surgery? Thanks.

  • @JAnthony019 I was told that I wasn't to put any weight on my ankle for 5 weeks, but after that I did have some pain. The issue ended up being the lack of range of movement I had in my ankle for not using it for basically 3 months and my ligaments and tendons tightened up.

  • I had this done after i pretty much forced the doctor into it. he thought it was not worth it. we;; it turned it it was so full of bones chips and scar tissue they it double the normal surgery time.

  • Hi I was told i needed this surgery I have some fluid withthin the peronal tendon sheath and a lot of scar tissue.

Will this help me specially with the scar tissue and be back to norma? I feel many solid lumps, and its been 5 months since I sprain the ankle.

  • @tadm123 I am not sure about the scar tissue, as I am not a doctor, but I can say that I am up playing again, and I haven't used a brace for about a year and my ankle is holding up just fine.

  • Good thing you recovered and does it still feel the same?

How can someone tell when its rip or tear a tendon or ligament?

I fractured mine playing soccer and I don't know if I teared it just ripped a part of it?

  • i am going to have this surgery next week ahh

  • can we get 100 percent after the surgery??????????

i will do mine next week, i saw different doctors(3), one of them said i can get 100 percent again, but thats not for sure,

man... that scared me a lot! my life is my sports.

its like no legs, no dream!

  • i had this procedure done in 2005 and was back runnnig within 8 weeks. I also got a lot of physiotherapy and was back playing six months after the operation.

5 years later and I'm still playing soccer and still banging in the goals at age 35. ankle feels fine but is occassionally a bit stiff. stpooed wearing a strap on it while playing, a few years back. best decision i made was to have this op done

  • If anybody out there who is NOT an athlete & had this procedure...how are you feeling? I had an osteochondral lesion repaired in April 2009 and instantly could walk better, but took months to be able to walk down stairs normally (still not 100%), & requently still have severe pain and can't walk normally without support of shoes. Trying to guage how excess weight affects healing (I knew it would be slower, but disappointed in my progress). Can't find anything on msg boards for non-athletes.

  • @serendippy522 because most non athletes don`t get the option of the surgery

  • I had a similar procedure done to remove a bonechip and clean up osteochrondal lesions of the talus... how is your runnin ability? I got my injury playing rugby, and due to being far away from my doctor I wanted to know how your running felt. I haven't tried to run longer than a block... I'm taking it very easy the doctor and my physical therapist said I'm probably going to have arthritis though

  • @dougradtke sorry to take a year to reply back... I am, what I would think is, 95% back to how it felt before the injury. Since I am a goalkeeper I don't run much, but when I do, it feels pretty good. Of course, the next day even now after 3+ years the ankle is a little sore the next morning.

Oh and I can kick the ball much further now. :)

  • I had one of these done today. Had the spinal so was fully awake. Was able to watch the procedure on the monitor and the surgeon talked me through everything I was seeing. And the anaesthetic didn't hurt a bit. Just felt wierd being paralysed from the waste down.

  • Well i had to talk my doctor into doing this scope on my left ankle he dod not think it would help...But after the operation he was glad he did it.... some much scar tissue and bone spurs that he could not see anything on the camera for the first half of the operation..Today 4 years after the injury its about 75 percent what it use to be.

  • How bad was it before this? Was it difficult to walk? Did it flare up on you?

  • From when the doctors told me that my ankle was "structurally" sound I didn't get back on the pitch for 6 months. During that time I went to physical therapy and I also only play as a keeper, so I am not running around all match. Even though I am not running around all the time during the match my ankle is still sore for a couple days afterwards.

  • It has been over a year since a had the injury and over 10 months since having the surgery. Good news is the doctors believe I will not have arthritis later down the road. Also, there are only a few different ocassions where I still have soreness and pain. Those are after playing soccer, yes I am playing again, and when I leave my ankle in the same position for a long time. With soccer it is back to feeling okay after a couple of days and a few minutes when I leave it in the same too long.

  • I am about to have to go thru this for an injury I sustained a year ago. My ortho thinks there is scar tissue and there have definitely been bone spurs detected, but tht may be from arthritis. I'm not looking forward to it, but if it can get me out of pain, then I'm all for it!

  • i just had a 4inch cut made on inside of right ankle to remove bone fragment, talis bone also badly damaged, beyong full repair. took nearly 8docs and 2years to find out problem, op was few weeks ago, i was fully asleep, had option of being awake and watching but thought ahhhhh no!!!

  • i have a bone chip in my left ankle i was told 2 years ago i needed surgery but i was scared about being put to sleep .. sounds liek you were awake i could handle that lol

  • Sorry, no I was put under for the ankle surgery. The voices you hear are the doctors in the room and he is speaking to the camera not me directly.

  • ok thankx was there in option to stay awake or be put to sleep??

  • Most surgeons will offer you a choice of whether you would like a general, local (eg ankle block, spinal block), or local with sedation. I just had ankle surgery done yesterday under general anaesthetic and it was fine, one minute I was awake, then I was under, then I was awake in a nice bed again before I knew it :-) Generals are very safe now and personally I prefer being asleep to being awake and aware during surgical procedures.

  • I just got back from the orthopedic surgeon today--I have a bone chip wedged in my ankle joint and he wants to do arthroscopic surgery. Did you have other injuries that made your recovery 16 weeks? I want to put it off until the fall so I can enjoy the summer. Any suggestions?

  • I believe the main reason for my recovery lasting as long as it has is because of the missed diagnosis the day of the injury. If the break was caught early, I could have gone in for surgery sooner and also could have eliminated the chances of developing a blood clot like I did as well. Personally, I would say get the surgery now instead of waiting. Just make sure that as soon as you are weight bearing to start stretching.

  • Thanks for posting this. How well have you recovered? I am considering a similar surgery, although I just have contusions / lesions, not loose bone fragments, but I still have ankle pain. Are you 100% now?

  • I started weight bearing on Jan 25, and was able to walk on my own without any aids like a cane or crutches. I still a significant amount of discomfort, but it is less each day. Of course, the key is not to overdo it. Finally, I was off that leg for 16 weeks total so I have more than just my ankle to recondition. Namely, my knee, but also my shins as they both get a little sore at the end of the day.
