@dustin720 There are no 'door gunner' MOS'es in thebArmy, only the Air Force has one.
To be a crew cghief you would need to be an aviation mechanic, or other MOS within their spectrum. As stated, the 160th is an Aviation unit only. Grunts usually don't even work with the Night Stalkers. You could always try and get into the 75th Ranger Regiment, they work with the 160th almost daily.
@andrademeza Air crews quallify for the possition. You'd have to assess for flight status and them assess again to be a part of the crew as a door gunner.
@JediMindTricks94 No, the 160th is an army special operations aviation task force. no ground punders. BUT, the units support personell are required to go above and beyond what normal techs or crew chiefs would be expected off. Read "The Night Stalkers" by Mike Durrant (yes, THE Mike Durrant), especially the chapter about Panama. You'll see that Night Stalkers are trully expected to go above and beyond.
@MH6M Alright, thanks friend, much appreciated for the info. I am thinking of going for the rangers after I finish school. or perhaps 101st airborne. I really want to join the army!
Best way to fly right here. Got take a few trips on 160th airlines myself in Afghanistan. @mcroberts101 Hi McRobrts101...they are!!!! I know a few USMC,USN and USAF rotory pilots. They all say the same things. 160 pilots push the metal past the breaking point and keep it flying right...
@mcroberts101 The best in the world! I remember one time they thought it'd be funny to fly under one of the bridges in Mosul & scare the shit out of all us grunt tagging along with them & TF-20. We're talking about 40 FT of clearance between the water & the bridge, & the supports arched so they were literally like 5-10 FT off the surface of the Tigris. So damn low that the rotor wash was kicking mist & spray up into the bird. Needless to say one of the best damn helicopter rides of my life!
i dont know much about 160th night stalkers. heard off them just recently. what kinda unit is this exactly? its obvius there are pilots in the pic.. but i thought night stalkers were some kinda airborne unit (like delta force), and just that, not helicopter pilots etc.. sure they might have some copters in the reg like any other SOF, but is this a helicopter special force? thats the image this vid gave me..

Night Stalkers are the Armys elite Special Operations aviators. You might say they are commandos that fly helicopters. They train with Special Ops Soldiers and only with them (Rangers, Special Forces, SEALs etc) - they provide aviation support, transportation and other things as well.
Not entirely. Special operations is more than door kickers. Night Stalkers provide aviation support for special operations Soldiers. They need to be trained bo meet the demands that regular aviators will probably never face.
Jayti83, 160th SOAR is the Helo support for SOCOM, there mission is exactly that. They were created because of the debacle that was the Tehran Hostage Rescue. Of course they have Pilots, SOAR stands for Special Operations AVIATION Regiment, so all they do is fly, my biggest regret was not joining them when I had the chance
The 160th are the best helicopter unit in the world. There job is to transport and support special op infantry in area and situations normal helicopter pilots cannot handle
Ehhh... no. There are many airforces around the world who train mid air refueling. And saying that the 160th SOAR is the only unit that is equiped for that task is completely wrong! For example, take the EC-725, It's manufactured by Eurocopter and it can be equiped with a refueling probe that can refuel at almost every altitude.
Actually SurfCityKahuna, you can pick them. Any pilot can fill out a recruitment packet, but from their, they choose. And of course, no pilot is enlisted, only Warrant and Commisioned.
lost their colors in 'Nam? 160th didn't exist back then. They didn't come into existance till after the failed hostage rescue attempt in Iran. Delta tried to pull off that one using "regular" pilots and choppers. The failure led to the creation of 160th. Read "Inside Delta", damn good book.

stupid question but why do we still use littlebird? i mean it doesnt look ver safe next to the blackhawk and chinook... so what advantages does it have?
The Little Bird concept gives the Regiment the ability to go where no other helos can, or would dare. That small bird has a bright future, even though it does not look as safe as the slick Blackhawk or the mighty Chinook.
The AH-6 is the Regiments punching arm and the MH-6 is one of the units customers most favorite way to get the jump on the bad guys.
All the Little Birds are the units short range helos that have their own right to still be in service.
Much like MH6M has already said.. versatility... the little bird can do what other helo's can't, not to mention its fast and surprisingly quiet, you really don't know its coming until its right on you. Its not designed for lifting, troop movement or attack roles like an Apaches, Black hawk or Chinook generally are but its able to perfomr all three functions as they apply to the SF crowd... much like an American Express- NEVER leave home without it!
The MH-6 is one of the safest helicopters in design in the world today. One, the location of the engine allows it to separate form the aircraft without falling through the ceiling of the aft cabin.
Also, the shape of the fuselage allows the skids to break off in a hard impact and allows the aircraft to roll. Basically, if I could choose one helicopter to crash in, I would choose that one. That's just the safety aspect, not to mention the things the MH^M and gardnerbc have already mentioned.
Pilots, crew chiefs, helicopter mechanicks, maintnence crews. Basicly all MOSs that are necessary. Once you get into the unit, you are a Night Stalker.
I spent from 92-98 in D-co. Was there for the Kilo model transition. Nice to see that 29 is still active. Be safe guys, but above all, be on target +/- 30. ;-)

FULLY MISSION QUALIFIED CREWS! Pilots are great, but they are just cabby's. It takes a team of dedicated, patriotic, and committed men to fly the NIGHT-STALKERS missions. They are a TEAM! Each one as important as the others. They will die, and have for each other and their cargo. Great Video, however it takes more than pilots to get the mission done. A good Crewchief and Mini gunner is worth his weight in diamonds.
His point douche nuts is that pilots get all the glory and behind every great pilot is a crew chief running and fixing the aircraft. The unsung heros.
