  • I am not very happy about CFL because three times CFL already burn out and smoke into air. Mecury vapor air that make my left eye become blind for 45 second and restore my left eye to see again for first time. I hate CFL because of mercury and HIGH EMF! I bough LED light without Mercury and some other low 25 or 60 watt incadescend light bulbs. CFL is very dangerous because fire and smoke mecury vapor into air. BAN lousy CFL!

  • LED FTW

  • Most people just toss them in the garbage. There should be recycling box at every store.

  • CFL bulbs contain mercury and there will soon be billions of them leaching deadly mercury into our water supply. Expect millions of cases of mercury poisoning in the near future and a lot of very crazy (mad as a hatter) people running around.

  • A recycling fee or deposit should be charged at the time of purchase of CFLs. They are at least as hazardous as pop cans & bottles. People are so used to throwing incandescent bulbs in the trash, they will most likely do the same with CFLs.

  • Recycling cfl light bulbs? And there is a fee for disposal? The hell with that. Just toss them in the trash can make your life easy. Just use incandesence bulbs. No mercury and safer to the enviroment.

  • @TheIxtlan Coal burning power plants release huge amounts of mercury into the atmosphere, so because incandescent bulbs use 4 times the electricity of a CFL they actually cause the release of MORE mercury into the environment than if you were to just throw a CFL in the trash. I recycle all of my CFLs (all three that have burned out in the 4 years I've been using them), it's free for me and not anymore difficult than taking used batteries to be recycled.

  • @idontcare80 i strongly believe in being proud of my home just like MOST people are. anybody who ONLY uses cfls in their homes because of a MYTH that it will prevent global warming is a religious nut job. And further more, these GREENIES would rather live using shitty light in their house because of a stupid BELIEF that cfls and leds are safe for our planet. I'm not sure about how much mercury are in cfls but i know that cfls give off horribe light. I have stocked up on edison bulbs

  • @noreaga12326 I didn't say anything about global warming in my comment, I said CFLs reduce the amount of mercury that is released into our environment. I have taken all of my CFLs that have burned out (3 of them in the past 4 years) to a place where they are properly disposed of, so not only am I reducing the amount of mercury pumped into the atmosphere by using a more energy efficient bulb, but I'm also keeping the mercury that is in the CFL out of the environment. I also save $ on energy. Win

  • @idontcare80 i know that u didnt say anything about global warming. i just wanted to bring up that point anyway just in case u were one of those crazy believers that incandescents cause global warming. You do have a point about compact flourecents saving money because it uses less energy BUT to me, the light quality from cfls are shitty. the only flourecent lights i like are the old skool tubes and circular versions.

  • @idontcare80 if these cfls do have a lot of mercury like many ppl say they do, lets face it, 8 out of 10 ppl are not going to recycle these bulbs. they will end up in the garbage and dirty our landfills. Another issue is that cfls dont work in all fixtures. there are some places where incandescents are needed. Do they really think that im gona pay thousands of dollars of my hard earned money to replace fixtures to use shitty light?? congress AS USUAL, not thinking b4 they act.

  • When they charge to recycle these things, guess what? People will just dump them in their trash can. It's the same thing with tires, only people dump those along the roads around here or in canals because they charge so much to recycle them.

  • CFLs are a lot harder to break than filament bulbs

they're roughly the same price now

only contain like less than 5 milligrams of mercury

less than 2 second delay to switch them on

  • I can get them for about 10p (British Pound Sterling)

  • me too!! CFLs give your house, a cold, lonely, empty, dark, gas station feel. i hate them and use them only in utility rooms in areas where they won't easily break since they contain mercury and pose major health risks if broken! i like my regular bulbs!!! and they go out like any light bulb. regular switching on & off decreases CFL bulb life

  • The CFL's I have in my garage take a long time to warm up when it is cold or even cool. You are 100% correct about fluorescent lights' lifespans are shortened by turning them on and off. I've seen them last MUCH longer when left on 24/7 than the lights that were turned on and off with motion sensors in a warehouse.

  • i don't know how breathing mercury is worth saving the environment. the sun will one day explode and kill everything anyway.

  • yes, but that'll be in like 5 billion years. we'll be nowhere near it by then

  • government should not be telling us what kind of light bulbs to use

  • we let them tell us all kinds of things, what one more? lol

  • The ammount of mercury in CFL bulbs is signifigant enough that those with small children may wish to avoid using them, and that is a personal decision that should be respected. The person may wish to save energy and reduce greenhouse emmisions in other ways, like biking to work or taking short, cool showers. Perhaps they have a wind turbine or solar collector which they use for their household energy. Outlawing manufacture of incandescent bulbs is absolutely ludicrous. Sounds like the democrats.

  • About time someone mentioned that the tiny bit of mercury in the CFLs is actually less than what's in those 40 and 48 inch tubes on the ceiling that we have used for decades and decades. Yes if concentrated into landfills the mercury can be a problem but for other people to spread the propaganda that a CFL was broken and the EPA came out and quarantined a person's property is horsecrap! I have all but the outdoor bulbs now fitted with CFLs - power bills are very noticably less.
