Thank you so much! Spent 25 years during those tuff times and the boardwalk fire. Raised my kids at the SeaView Towers S. Bath and Ocean. Faced the boardwalk and that great view we loved it!
Long Branch is my home town. Everything I read about Long Branch and Asbury Park say that they were in decline by the 1960s. But as a child during that decade, all I remember are fun times at the boardwalks and beaches in Long Branch and Asbury.
great video. i used to go to long branch with my family from jersey city alot in the 80s. i was 10 when the pier caught fire, i used to have dreams of still being there. your video bought back good memories. thanks for sharing.
I'm only 25, but i definitly remember wizard world.....although steves down the block was WAY better. It had less games, but it had ALL the new games first. I'll never forget playing street fighter 2 and mortal kombat for the first times there.
Well done. I may remember it differently (as I was only nine when Long Branch's pier burned down) but I only lived two blocks from it. I remember falling asleep as a little kid with the window open and hearing the organ of the Hunted Mansion, playing "Operation Wolf" at Wizard's World, watching Bam Bam Bigelow at AP Convention Hall, and Tillie's face (years later) as I drove past the abandoned Empress, the abandoned carousel and the failing XXX theatres.
Bravo ~ Very Well done ! i think I know you we went to school together West End school 5th grade Mrs.Henderson class? You brung back alot of memories to bad it's not like that now
Your piece is done very well. I'm 47 and that's how I remember it also. I moved out to California in 75 and did'nt see the fire burn the pier. I also wish it was the same as before. Well it can't be like that but it can still be something special. Great piece especially with my favorite Bruce song.
I grew up in LB and wish it was like that as I was growing up. It was making a come back but th economy has brought it to a halt.
I would have loved to have worked in that haunted house.
Dark Ride is a movie that takes place in AP and shows some old AP attractions.
But yea... I hope they recover and become major attractions again. It is amazing how low lifes can move into towns and basically make them go to sh*t.
What a beautiful piece! The way you synced the gorgeous "Jungleland" with the images I recall (though I missed the fire on the Long Branch Pier) - Thank you so much for the chance to experience it once again! - Maureen
Couldn't make it the whole way through, the first time but I made it this time. What memories came rushing back to me. I wish I could take my daughter to experience what I did. There is always Pt. Pleasant.
great video John! Perfect song to accompany it. Forgot about a couple of the "attractions" in LB until I watched your video. Wish I could lay eyes on the Pier Pub and Mums and Pistol Pete's just one more time...Again, thank you.
Asbury Park and Long Branch were making a comeback around 2004, but now they're having problems. The housing crunch has left a lot of the "new" houses unsold.
I visited Asbury Park in summer 2007, and it was okay. But I hear the schools are pretty bad.
Sweet. Brought back lots of wonderful memories from high school and before. Nice to think that we had it so good; sorry to see that at least the parts shown are in such disarray. I went back to LB with my kids in 2006 and was pleasantly surprised with how good things are in other neighborhoods.
very well done editing to the Bruce song. Great pictures, just wish their were more. To see Num's and Pier Pub again stirred some dormant brain cells.
I too lived in both places and loved them very much. When I was about 9 yrs old in 1960, my dad taught me how to shoot a rifle at the LB shooting gallery. They actually used live .22 ammo ! The rifles were chained to the counter so you couldn't turn around and shoot tourists. Too bad ! My sister taught me how to play pinball when I was 5 standing on a stool at the North LB beach. I've been hooked on pinball ever since. I learned SkeeBall at the LB pier and still play whenever I visit NJ.
god bless someone that remembers what i remember in long branch & asbury park, i lived in both , and loved them and have great memories of them both. itis nice to see that someone has my memories on film. i miss monmouth county very much and there will be and is a change happening !!!! i am a true jersey girl........
Actually, a fire is probably the best way for it to go. Our northern equivalent of Long Branch was Bertrand Island Amusement Park. It seems like I spent the whole of the 1970's there. It had been a major attraction for 60 years until it was torn down for "development" and replaced by town houses and condominiums.
I wish it had burned instead...
Your childhood memories went the way of fire. Mine went by crass greed. Which would you have preferred?
wow i wish long branch was like this again now its full of drugs and violence i f long branch and asbury were like this i would be happy. Im 12 and i think this is a example of polution and all the bad thing that are happening in this world. look at 1:21 and if you look at the water its blue! now the water is accualy green. we are called the green wave
When an amusement park burns, it's hard to rebuild. The insurance won't cover everything, and the parks don't draw huge crowds anymore (except maybe Coney Island).
There are hundreds of abandoned amusement parks throughout the USA.
Powerful images. I spent lots of time in the Palace arcade under Tilly's watchful grin back in the early 80's. Now it's an empty parking lot, but Dylan is playing Convention Hall next week and there are signs of revitalization thank God.
hung out at wizzard world many a spring afternoon when school let out. Nickle pinball...can't beat it. Left long Branch in 1974 and I haven't been back. Think I'll make the drive this summer. I tell my kids stories about growing up there all the time and they don't beleive the half of it. Tillies mom & pop store at the end of the block, Star of the Sea School, chilling on the jetties, walking to the movies on Broadway to see John Wayne, Dairy Queen on the corner, etc. Those were the days.
great memories. Went back a few years ago so sad to see Asbury . What happened? Long Branch I almost didn't recognize it. Thanks for sharing the old pics.
WOW that was depressing :( I hung out at the Stone pony and all the clubs on the stip. And even saw Bruce there before he was a somebody. Would walk on the pier and boardwalk every day in the summer. Lived in Ocean Grove...a walk away. I have not been there in 30 years. New it fell apart but did not realize that it was that bad...bummer. Thanks for the great memories it brought tears to my eyes and a warmth in my heart.
My opinion is people enjoyed things more 15/20yrs ago. Everything now is so played out & built around money money money. Big, obnoxious buildings & amusement parks. Tacky architecture & tacky people designing them. How do we move ahead without forgetting the past?
Long branch sucks

John - Thank you so much for creating this video ...It's so well-done, and brought back so many outstanding memories.
Growing up in Edison, NJ, I also spent so many days/evening in Asbury Pk. Long Branch and Seaside Hts (late 70s/early 80s).
I moved out of NJ in 84, now living in Northern VA just outside of Washington, DC.
What great times the Jersey shore was in that time frame.
Thanks again...
