  • Mon Mome = legend

  • A how funny it was to see an outsider win, having stayed amonst the back runners for so long and who hardly got a mention early on. And a charismatic winning jockey too. Well done Liam.

  • The number of race horses killed annually is staggering. Flat racers are raced too young. Steeplechasing is simply too much for too long. After the 2011 Grand National they had to give the top horses oxygen. And "only" two died, is that supposed to be an improvement over 5?

  • LOL, i love how the horse at 1:55 keeps it's legs up for a few moments then gets backup like

    'nice stretch that was'

  • 5 horses died in this race

  • You know some people hit the horses very hard so they have no choice but to run otherwise they will get hit harder you lot are HORRIBLE because the poor horses are hit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I mean they're going as fast as they can and hitting them just distracts them Huh!!!!!!!!!

  • @StevieLakeSophie Do you know anything about racing???

  • You know some people hit the horses very hard so they have no choice but to run otherwise they will get hit harder you lot are HORRIBLE because the poor horses are hit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • what about arbour supreme?

  • how cum no1 can spell Black Apalachi correctly :L

  • they shouldn't have so many horses in the race :(

  • It's awful to watch this.

  • This is a disgrace to humanity. The horses never saw it coming

  • @MultiHorsefreak Agree. It's disgusting and animal abuse (the horses are trained, sure, but they can't say yes or no).

  • @blugal102 yes they can they can refuse to race if you not just see this and have a opnion that isnt valid. you will see it many a time.

  • @jimmyg34567 Yes, some can, but they possibly don't know that they can. They may feel forced that this is their life and their job is to do their job no matter what. Horses have a brain, and horses can feel pain and emotion.

  • @blugal102 if a horse doesnt want to run, it wont. a horse called Chaninbar has refused to race on his last 3 starts. And watch the 2010 one, King Johns Castle refuses too

  • racehorses are the most pampered animals on earth there are far worse cruelties inflicted on horses and other animals and usually in other countries

  • What "special knowledge" about racing makes up for the fact that five horses were effectively slaughtered at this race in 2009? Can only hope they're not intelligent enough to know they're dying but I certainly have my doubts...

  • i fucking cried when black apalachi fell

  • A true classic race and a popular winning jockey.

  • Picked up £90 for this National with 1st n 2nd ;o)

  • i guess all the true racing fans are sick of all the idiots who just come on here to criticise why dont you go and see real cruelty like horses starving to death in fields and being herded up for meat the brits love horses more than anyone and if its so cruel you wouldnt get people of all ages sexes and different walks of life crowding bookmakers on grand national day so just get lost and watch andrex puppy adverts or something fluffy lol !!!!!!!!!!

  • @littlebay75 So true, I think the GN is the best in the world!

I do have to admit it can seem quite cruel to the horses but it's such a great race, I mean all trainers I think aspire to put a horse into the race, one of the best ever being of course Red Rum, actually get quite sad when I see old videos of him.

  • @littlebay75: 5 horses died under this race. Is that the british way of loving horses?

  • @AdelineT85 no they didnt. only 1 did, Hear The Echo.

    R.I.P u were a class horse

  • @littlebay75 what im saying i see races everyday and i am sick of pepole seeing one race and the they think they know everything about the sport

  • Comment removed

  • Didnt u know the kangaroo wearing football boots sits on the horses back watching the so called "practice matches' latetly with cricket.. LOL just care for the horses.

  • it shows how ridiculous these morons are they dont even make constructive criticisms they just hurl insults , and know absolutely nothing about racing or racing folk whos the dumb ass baboon ? lol !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! oh and tayky 001 who won the ashes it wasnt you kangaroo killer for football boots people !!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • I watch too make a point , poor horses, i wont go over the pathetic horses that fell, it doesnt matter were in the world .i would feel the same. So hound me I dont care I do have a point, & it will b the same.

  • why dont you sad muppets who come on here just to slag off racing go and do what animal righters do best let mink free from fur farms and then sit back while they massacre all the local wildlife you people no nothing about animals or horses you are ridiculous you think the world is full of andrex puppies racing fans care more about animals than any of you ignorant anarchistic baffoons !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @littlebay75 Listen baboon, I tried to b nice to u, nah not anymore u sent a private mesg, u dont listen, these racese are for poor horses that, if they dont pull up ,they are going to the zoo, i tried to b nice too u ,u wont have it, so be it, duub arse.

  • @taykyl001 hav u realised that the RSPCA think that this race is fine.

    U

    Moron

  • @comeonshaymen Hey Moron go & harrass someone else, Im not the only one that thinks this race is cruel & a joke. Go & find entertainment somewhere else.

  • @taykyl001 u obviously dont understand horse racing, so for that i sympathize wiv u. I'm very, very sorry that u happen to be mentally retarded

AND PLEASE GET UR FACTS RITE

  • The WORST RACING EVER! How many horses, and Jocks have to get killed before they call this SHIT OFF!.

  • @Nucleo85Torino This will never be banned bcos for evry moron like u, there r 5 people who see sense and realise that this race is he highlight of the horse racing calendar

Oh, and no jocks have ever died in this

  • @comeonshaymen Gee what ashame. no jocks. Well first time for everything.

  • @taykyl001 First time???? no jocks EVER U RETARD

get ur facts rite b4 u start slagging sommet brilliant off

  • If more jockeys were seriously injured or died, then maybe they could ban this pathetic, cruel race.

  • Velká pardubická is a famous steeplechase cross-country run.

    Grand national is big zero

  • mon mome yeah baby

  • how is this legal

  • To ride in this must be give such a rush at the start.

  • R.I.P Hear The Echo Whatta Legend

  • @jg12353 what happend to hear the echo? :(

  • I just love watching this!

It begins with, let's say 40 riders, and only 10 finish it!

  • this just shows how unique the grand national still is, a cluster of fancied horses at the final fence and mon mome carrying more weight than when he finished tenth the year before scoots away from them at 100 -1 !!!!!!!!

  • A Fantastic and Gallant second place for Comply or Die, i do also agree that Black Apalachi would have been up there as well. R.I.P Hear the Echo you were a great horse. Congrats though to Liam Treadwell and Mon Mome :D

  • @joshcraig9194 Ye, luv Comply Or Die. Shame hes a gelding. Wouldve loved it if he had kids. They'dve been amazing horses, no doubt

  • my mother in law had a pound on that horse and won 101 back :-)

  • the horses are so cute, running along without their jockeys bless

  • An elegant and aimiable horse, Mon Mome is a horse much loved by the public.

  • fantastic!!! just shows :) mon mome was FAR from the favourate. i also think black apalachi would have done well if his jockey didnt fall off, and well done comple or die :D

  • wft i was sure comply or die won this fking thing. I musta been out of it.

  • @smccr04 he won it in 2008

  • R.I.P Hear The Echo

    .

    .

    .

    .

My mam had money on him..

  • i had most of money of black apalachi last year.was excited for a while until he faltered.i still trust that horse will do well this year and i'll be backing it again

  • the national has changed but so have the horses the fences were scary , up to 1961, jumped by massive hunters , they were big in red rums era, and have gradually changed but for todays chasers they are still huge to jump , aintree have done a great job keeping with the times but maintaining the spectacle

  • i always like seeing the replay, such is always the case the actual winner doesn't appear to be mentioned hardly throughout most of the race, mainly the last few fences, just hiding among the masses of horses. Love hearing the crowd's reaction when Black Apalachi goes out, reckon quite a few lost their money at that moment.

  • i know the grand national has a big tradition and history but loosing 8-10 horses after the first three jumps is too much.of course it's the most difficult hunt race but they dont have to risk the lives of the horse or the jockeys

  • Anybody who thinks bigfella thanks is going to win in april is sooo naive, The horse has got pneumonia!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Anybody who thinks bigfella thanks is going to win in april is sooo naive, The horse has got pneumonia!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • In the "old days" horses were bred for the jumps - they were bigger with big bones. But now - speed, speed, speed! Greed, greed, greed. Some horses have even changed from the flat to jumps cos they were "too slow". What is the attitude of owners/trainers to jockeys who Pull Up. Are these jockeys still paid even if they pull up out of consideration for a broken horse? Over 300 die each year - for greed. Heart breaking.

  • Don't suppose if any1 has tha 2009 Scottish Grand National won by Hello Bud or can any1 please tell me where I can find video of it????

  • Comment removed

  • big fella thanks stayed on very well for a young horse, but hyped horses rarely win the national if black appalachi got round he reminds me of little polveir he might just outstay them all

  • An there goes me Irish National winner Hear The Echo dead fuckin hell R.I.P fuckin hate Davy Russell!!!

  • what about abor thingy?

  • @tincatinca0113 u mean Arbor Supreme

  • hi im an odds maker for tote . my tip is vic venturi for 2010 to win. black apalachi should run a good race and hello bud is a 33/1 outsider which has a good chance of a place. vic venturi all the way :)

  • I agree. He won the Beecher well.

  • i won 200 pound from this

  • BIG fella thanks for the 2010 grand national...! back him early!

  • He was running on well today at Kempton before he fell. Today's trip was too short for him.

  • Black Appalachee (not sure how u spell it :P) ran a really good race. Its ashame he fell other wise i think he might have won if not defo would ov gotten a place

  • Black apalachi is the accurate name of the horse.

  • @FinalFurlong1 i placed my bets on black appalachi today

  • @MuffinGirlBethan so have I. I got 12-1 but they pay out on highest odds, it's got a great chance

  • @FinalFurlong1 he came second but i'm glad mccoy came first

  • @MuffinGirlBethan i know, happy for mccoy he deserved to win it after all of them trys

  • what a beauty 100/1 :)

  • I had first and second. That was a good day!! The bookies did not love me when I went in to get my pay out.

Still gives me the same excitement watching it now!

  • @bryrw06 haha well done, yes still a amazing buzz to watch it now

  • Had Black Apalache that day and was gutted wen he fell....but had Cerium 2euro each way at 500/1...the bookie was payin out on 5 places so got 250 euros for a 4 euro bet...happy days

  • @endless13 I was on both Black Apalache and Silver Birch. Was a quick finish of what looked like a good race for me :(

  • Right. This seems the right way round to do it. This time I'll have £1 on Mon Mome to win. Lets see how I do.

  • 5.45 my willys travelling well lol

  • R.I.P Hear The Echo backed it in this race just like I did when he won tha Irish National!!! Yes his jockey should have pulled him up I hate it when jockey's push their horses 2 far!!!

  • Where abouts did Hear The Echo fall ? was it this 2009 Grand Nationals ?? I saw many fall but the commentator did not Mention Hear the Echo fall ??

  • He didnt fall he collapsed and died 100metres from finish line, His jockey had light pink jacket on, u can see his last jump at 9:01, such ashame was a great horse

  • Comment removed

  • thats horrible... are you sure?? because it didn't show aynthing..

  • @GallopGirl088 he didnt fall, he collapsed asnd died on the run in

  • i got 200/1 on betfair that day, happy memories

  • Great race. This is the coverage of the race we got here in Australia, on Sky Racing. However, I prefer to hear the BBC's commentary.

  • RIP Hear The Echo, why that jockey didnt pull him up ill never know

  • the grand national, even today, is a stiffer more classy and competitive race than the Velka Pardubicka

  • the grand national is run at a much faster pace, and all of the fences are big not just some of them, much tougher the pardubice is for plodders, so dont knock , this great spectacle

  • yeah red rum the legend but i did back lescargot when he won and the race with crisp was probably the greatest national ever rummy was the golden era ithink black appalachi still has a chance of winning the national next year also like gone to lunch if he runs too long way off yet though

  • Watching once again has me marvel at the great Red Rum who made ten circuits within one fall finishing first, first, second, second, first. I saw all five. Remarkable performance.

  • I dont know if im missing something. 2009 My Will started favourite and despite making at least 5 serious errors finished a staying on 3rd beaten less than 12 lengths. This year , has been set out for Aintree 2nd in Ireland in November, unplaced (predictably) in the gold cup, likely to get more favoured ground than last year.,carrying 4lbs less this year.Downside Rubys not riding, but should it be 50/1, dont think so......

  • wouldent want to be at the frount fall off. lucky to be alive ouch.

  • V Williams is my 4th cousin, proper bo i tell thee

  • to say this was a rubbish national because there were too many in with a chance shows total stupidity tell the 23 that didnt complete!!!!

  • whatever happend 2 the good horses winning,100-1 wtf, anyway 2010 will be mccoys year

  • ahhh the worlds most famous steeplechase also the most dangerous more horse fall in that then any other just inmagie riding and winning that race

  • too many horses with a chance.. yet a 100 to 1 shot wins .. yeah ..

  • theres actually 40 horses

  • Well what are you watching it for then?!

  • because i thought it was going to be a nice race and stuff but wasnt what i expected

  • well do your research before watching and subsequently posting then. Dont insult an English tradition thats been running much longer than the KD. Americans dont understand steeplechasing at all, so they get on youtube and watch the videos and comment how awful they are?! lol FYI, IMO, English horses are often much better cared for than many US horses.

  • And also, I am an American here, there are more fatalities on dirt flat racing than steeplechase and jumps racing . The difference is in Europe, they're not so doped up to the point where they can't even feel their own legs.

  • I don't think that's so. I just think that steeplechase riders are better riders in generals than american jockeys. also, the grand national horses are older than american flat racehorses.

  • This may be true, but we as Americans need to realize that what we're doing to our horses is wrong. We've come to the point where we can't even standardize our drug rules with the rest of the world. We are the only country that allows lasix, and many other types of steroids, none of which are good for our horses. Which is why European racing, both flat and jumps, are more pure, in my opinion.

  • I agree, but I think there is truth in what I said as well.

  • Yeah, I'm not disagreeing with you, the age difference from running at 2-3 to running at 8 or so is big.

  • Poor old Hear The Echo & Exotic Dancer R.I.P.

  • It pisses me off that the space near the barriers in lined with police. It means that the crowds can't get nearer the action and have to be distanced from everything and for what?? another stupid health and safety rule no doubt. Don't you agree that it detracts from the ambiance? Shouldn't it be stopped?

  • Black Apalachi was looking all over the winner until Bechers 2nd time around. Jumped it fine, but landed far too steeply. That one mistake cost him the race, I certainly think he would have won.

  • mon mome 100 to 1!

  • And although he looked as if he was full of running when he went; watch Black Apalachi at fence 19. He drifts violently to the right before taking off... the sign of a tired horse. I think the pace he set was starting to get to him by then.

  • I said to my dad 5 hours before the race, when we were looking through the runners; "I'll be really disapointed if Mon Mome wins". I said this cos he did nothing in last years race and he totaly disapointed in the Scottish and Welsh Nationals, so i figured he couldn't stay 4 miles let alone 4 1/2 miles...boy was my face red. XD

I had Black Apalachi last year and said he'd win the Becher in November when he fell. When he won that i knew he was a shoe in, but i was worried as he is a steep lander

  • mon mome fucking awesome

  • No es la carrera mejor pero sí la mas bella.

  • I really wanted Rambling Minster

  • well monmone or whatver ran a perfect race and it did deserve to win and i bet on it lol

  • Compy or Die so totally deserved to win not mon whatever his name is.

  • put a pound on mon mome, doesnt even get a mention, last 2 fences was nuts

  • i had it and didnt know it was there till last fence lol had cerium e w aswell ouch

  • I backed Hear The Echo just like I did when Hear The Echo won tha Irish National last year and I thought he ran a crackin race but 4m4f was just too much in tha end!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Backed State of play and Irish Invader .Brilliant win for Mon Mome .R.I.P Hear the echo

  • I had a quid on Hear the Echo - I think I cursed it.....

  • bahaha, they say the only way to end up with a million from racing is to start with a billion! :-P better luck next time mate!

  • Poor old Hear The Echo & Exotic Dancer R.I.P.

  • rip here the echo and exotic dancer....

  • R.I.P Hear The Echo x Only the good die young x

  • Well done mon mone i thought i did well in last years scottish national £2win on iris de balm at 140/1 (betfair) but this surpasses that £2 win at 199/1 on mon mome

  • well done mon mome

    rip hear the echo

ap i fort u was gunna do it

  • This was a great race, to bad that Comply or Die came in second. Let's hope he is going to win next year.

  • I was gutted when comply or die came 2nd hope he wins in 2010

  • well it died after the race

  • Who did?

  • Hear The Echo collapsed after the race and died

    XXX

  • i won 90,000 on monmone :)

    i was so pleased teehee

  • you put 900 pounds on a 100/1 shot.......yeah right......

  • The second time over Becher's really thinned out the crowd this time. My dad was going on, "I'd love what 'a bad mistake' is!" I wanted to say, "Well, it's a little hard when 40 horses (minus the fallers) are going over hedges @ 30 miles an hour. First time I've seen the National, and live too, on TVG. All my knowledge from Elizabeth Taylor in 'Velvet' :p

  • OH NO!! It was live on TVG?! I couldn't find it on their schedule. I should have tuned in just in case. I usually buy the Jump Racing DVD at the end of the year to get all the National Hunt races.

  • Noooo... I didnt know either! I called my parents in England instead who put the phone next to the TV! lol... I wrote and asked TVG the year before if they were showing it and they said they didnt have a contract to. Cant believe I didnt even check the channel! oh well.

  • Both TVG and HRTV have increased coverage of UK racing. So we'll definitely keep a lookout next year! :-)

  • I actually bet on Hear The Echo and, being not too confident in my luck on betting on the GN, I literally said "Oh Gawd my horse's just gonna diiie". And it did!, poor thing.

  • 100-1 i gt 4 mon mone ad black apalachi aswell e shuda won the fuckin jockey fell off with no1 round im

  • i had hopes on darkness and parsons legacy

  • oh did Hear The Echo die? how sade! i heard he collapsed on the run in and saw the screens go up, so i suspucted a heart attack or something. r.i.p Echo. and r.i.p Exotic Dancer, who died in a different race =(

on a happier note- i won £139! i got 1st, 2dn and 3rd (£10 on Mon Mome and £2 on both Comply Or Die and My Will) very brave run from Comply Or Die- 1st and 2nd is great! hope he can place again next year! Mon Mome was fab- 100-1! WELL DONE! xxxx

  • You lucky little thing. I had 1st and 2nd one year. I was on Black Appalachi but the stupid sod fell at Bechers on the second circuit. I didn't know Hear The Echo died, I thought they all got round ok. What a pity. I backed Comply or Die last year. Mon Mome won easily considering his lamentable form. Only the jockey and horse were male this year, the owner, trainer and groom were all girls. Well done all round. No animal rights people I note. That's a blessing.

  • lol well i wouldnt call Black Apalachi a "stupid sod" haha lots of horses fall he landed steeply over a huge fence and the jockey lost balance- but as the saying goes- "it mattersmore when there's money on it" lol.

but i only put £1 on him, not £10 haha my bad maths!

  • I was going to say. £10? You could have had a good night out on the £1000 you'd have collected from the bookies. Still £129or whatever is very good. I bet you never do that again in your lifetime unless you're a bit of a form expert, not that form was much good this year. Perhaps you've got a crystal ball. Tell me your predictions for the Derby. Yes with me it was the money talking. Actually I think it was the jockey, O'Regan's fault with Black Appalachi, he got too close to the fence.

  • wat price u get on mon mone 100-1 i gt

  • lukeycwba1 i also got 100-1 about an hour before the race haha!

MANFROMMAS yeah if i had the £1000 i think i would be a happy girl haha well, i am already!! i got the winner also in '06 and '08, and i had Bindaree in '02 before that, although i didnt put money on that one (i was too young). form in the national means nothing! for the national you want something around 9/10 years old, not much more than 11st and have raced over 3 1/2miles min (Mon Mome ran the national last year (4 1/2miles))

  • same ere pound each way

  • didnt mention mon mome till 2 out.sneaky devil.had cerium e/w wounded.tried his heart out tho
