If the barrel of the weapon were in direct line with your wrist, the recoil would go straight back instead of up. Same if the barrel were under your wrist level, the recoil would go downwards.

When the cost becomes reasonable we may begin to see them. Still, its not going to be anything like "Independence Day" or any kind of "death ray" thing. It would be more of a precision strike weapon.

People like to hold the gun closer to the magazine port or directly on it as the shooter can maintain a more compact shooting stance thus improving accuracy.
