  • Thank you for your service Yanks.

  • I hate to say it, but this wasn't a very good documentary on a couple of levels. The cinematography was ok though. There was little about the background of the campaign, and too much of a self-righteous old grump with an axe to grind...just shots of countryside and a guy grumbling. We don't understand because we weren't there - thanks, got it for the tenth time.

The filmmakers could have done better.

  • theres fucking too much american perspective in the world

  • @wham41 Pretty sure it's because they've been in on top during the beginning of modern times, Only now they're declining like all great empires. History repeats itself once again.

  • my grandfather's brother died on attu. my grandfather himself fought on sicily and in italy. and, he never had nightmares of his own battles, just of his brother frozen dead in the snow.. and people here talking about it not being "their" island.... well, who else has earned it with their lives?

  • " They stole our island ".... says one of the veterans. Our country our people...

That old man is so indoctrinated. Did he know Alaska was bought by the U.S.

government. First were there the native tribes. Than some Russians who were never much interested in the place. So who " owns " or owned it ? It was certainly not owned by the veteran when he fought there as a young man. Sad.

  • @vertizontaal yeah they bought it now its THEIRS thats how it works right?

  • Why is there a television next to the water ? Isn't that dangerous?

  • @ 3:50 Holy shit, that soldier invent the first planking, and its EPIC one

  • Infantry! Follow me!

  • hmm sorry i can not engkish, give this in germany laung.. thanx

  • Trying to 'rewind' or slide back the bar crashes Flash in Google Chrome browser 11. You have to start the movie over again. So, don't rewind!

  • @SSgtParmer you're not actually a staff sergeant are you

  • 1812? Weren't the Mexicans on American Soil in the Mexican American war and The Confederates in Civil war? Or do they not count them because the CSA was a rebellion and the Mexicans invaded Texas before it was annexed?

  • I know it may not amount to much say thank you for all you have been through, but it would be ....unthinkable not to do so anyway.. THANK YOU SO MUCH!! to all that have and are serving this country for your service and sacrifice! My prayers are with you all!

  • @MrHarmony you may have read that we treated them fairly well, but what were your sources? and what were their sources? History is written by governments, altered to make them look good. No one knows the truth about history, except those that have lived it. read all you want, there will always be two sides to one story. not that i disagree, its just we dont really know how we've treat our pows... during WWII we had our on camps, to isolate the japanese.

  • Canadian soldiers also took part in this battle.

  • @DarExc Nobody gives a f-ck. Especially not the Jews that Canada denied entry to when Hitler started his ethnic cleansing. Your country just does things for its own interest and whatever strokes your enormous ego. Even countries like North Korea are better than yours, cause at least they stick to their principles and beliefs, but Canadians are like the kids in school too worried about their image and change sides to an issue whenever its convenient to yourselves. GFY, I hope you lose the Cup.

  • god bless them. My teacher was in D-Day and drove a boat onto the beach, multiple times and he lived and went back a few years ago.

  • Imagine that vet in Pearl Harbour "God damn! All those japanese tourist in Pearl Harbour aren't learning about US, World and their own country history, they're triing to capture Hawaii again!"

    Senile dementia is funny sometimes

  • @SSgtParmer Actually if you read up on it.. the POWs that we captured in WW2 were treated actually very well. Treated a HECK of a lot better than our POWs in japan and germany. you may want to read up on your history a bit before you start smashing those that have served this country. and shame on you for that as well... when you have been through what they have and lived through, and woke up at night from dreams about it. Then you can let us know how you feel.

  • Who wrote that song that underscores the opening credits?

  • 7:36 so racist

  • @TheFloydenstein what of it?

  • @SSgtParmer You sir are an idiot...you know nothing of which you speak. Read a history book about the atrocities of the Japanese towards all of thier enemies, not just Americans. I fear that idiots like you dare make ignorant comments.

  • I got a japanese signed rising sun battle flag from Attu. It is nearly falling apart and rarely are able to take it out of storage.

  • @worldwarturvy Perhaps a national museum should care for that flag. You may want to consider that as a gift to one, upon your passing.

  • Rubbish

  • @SSgtParmer Tell that to the people you survived the rape of Nanking, China - over 500,000 Chinese civilians killed over a three month period by Japanese soldiers.

  • who did the closed caption?

  • I really enjoyed this Documentary I am however very upset that it has been kept from us until now... Thank you for opening our eyes to this battle and thank you very much to the men that served and gave their lives for us to be free. Thank you also to the soldiers of Attu that lived to tell the tale.. I hope you found your answer of why you made it to live all these years.. To tell the tale of the invasion of Attu, it may not be your answer of how but it is definitely your answer of why.

  • I really appreciated this documentary.ive been searching for it a long time to watch it. My grandfather faught in the battle of Attu and Kiska during WWII. Unfortunatly, he died Christmas Day 2000 when I was 7 years old so I never got to learn anything I know about the battle from him, even tho my dad says he never talked about it ever. In my school book, there was literally 1 sentence about Attu and it made me want to scream! no one knows about Attu despite the fact it was fought on our soil!

  • NFL/NBA/MLB/World Cup ...Jerseys $25

  • I know a man, personally, who fought in the battle of Attu during the Second World War. According to his account, helicopters in particular had difficulty taking off and landing and, although he was in the Air Force at the time, he spent many days and nights with regular Army, assisting them with setting up camps and equipment to go to war against the Japanese. I would love to interview him on camera some day--his stories of Attu are remarkable and amazing. This is a brilliant documentary!

  • "hoh, forgret abrout incrident!" hahahaha

  • Thnak you who served and protected our country.

  • of course, today Alaska is irrelevant as a strategic military position as any evasion will result in some serious bombs dropping on the heads of whoever invades it...

  • Alaska was purchased from Russia in 1867 - and originally organized as the Department of Alaska, the area was NOT a state - it was first the District of Alaska and then The Alaska Territory before becoming the state of Alaska upon being admitted to the United States and became the 49th state at the stroke of noon Washington time 08:00AM Alaska time - on January 3, 1959!!!

There was no reason to take the island back from the Japanese - it was not strategic - so let them freeze there!!!!

  • And it soon became a VERY strategic location - 50 miles away form Russia!!!

  • It's a bit sad that those men are angry about the monuments. Of course ww2 was a war with definable good and bad but such gestures should be dedicated to the future and not just to the past. I went to Wolgograd (former Stalingrad) with my Grandfather a couple of jears ago, he was a german soldier who had the luck of surviving. it gives me goosebumps till today when i remeber him shaking hands with russian veterans, there were no words necessary - old men knowing what hell is.

  • @Bahutsauvage the men thought that that was a monument to just the Japaniese solders not to all of the people who died in battle

  • @Bahutsauvage

My uncle had every reason to be unhappy about it. It is arrogant. If it was a monument to an apology of the senselessness and brutality of the Japanese (they snuck into medic tents at night and slaughtered the people laying there on the same place where that monument is) then maybe it would be ok..but I can totally see why it's not ok for them. He had to kill men face to face with a flamethrower. He can feel however he wants to feel. A monument is..not enough.

  • @Bahutsauvag--- just as your grandfather had the right to forgive, these men have the right to not forgive. i feel for them too, both in what they went through and in that they cannot forgive, but none the less it is their right. may all who suffer through war find peace, but as so many of us know....it's hard to find.

  • wow i never knew that.. when i read the video discription i couldnt believe it i thought this was some crazy conspiracy thing but damn its real.. and in no single history book it stands but that is nothing new the winners make the history how they want

  • Wha? Invaded Alaska? Why is this kept from us and not in common war books and movies? Why so secret, embarassment?

  • Cool.

    I dont like forgotten battles..

  • i would like to know when the public learned that america was invaded

  • 30:31 to 30:38 - for all of those who belive pretty much everything you're told...

  • It was amazing to see this film again! I hadn't seen it in so long, and this is probably one of the best opennings that PBS had aired since Ken Burns' the Civil War.

  • You can see the pain and tears in the eyes of the veterans so many years after the events. War leaves physical, emotional, psychological, financial, and spiritual scars that are unavoidable.

The politicians demand war, the ignorant masses buy into the fear, and the young people and the innocents get crushed.

It'll never make any sense except to the politicians and the fear-ridden who follow without thinking.

Love and forgiveness take so much more strength.

  • I am an Iraq War Veteran and I can appreciate your sentiment and I am not a fan of war. Had you posted this on an Iraq War video I would have no problem with it. But in this context on this video - war was upon us and was an only option.

This war was not an option and telling the Japanese that it's okay and we'll forgive you for attacking Pearl Harbor was not going to happen nor could it be allowed.

Do not confuse Love and Forgiveness with Justice and Freedom from oppression.

  • you should have gave the U.S to the Germans and then the world would not be a slum like it is today

  • oh yes

then all religious groups would die :P

  • thats the good part

  • lol

and so would u :P haha

  • lol

  • This is not a Chinese propaganda film. I'm one of the producers and the film was made for PBS, an American broadcaster. Every single statement in the film is based on thorough research, and a number of experts on the subject reviewed the film for accuracy prior to its release. Also, the invasion of Attu is the only time since 1812 that American soil has been invaded and occupied by a foreign military. You can read more about the film and get a list of historical sources at PBS's website.

  • @tomputnam10

... Chinese propaganda film? Who the hell said that?

It's documented history, fer Crissakes. And why would the Chinese be interested in the Japanese invasion of Alaska?

  • This "Chinese Propaganda Documentary" is not based on historical fact.

  • well the japanese did invade the islands off Alaska...So really invading alaska itself...however Alaska was not part of the USA during that time not until 1959 actually(so this video is a little midleading)

  • Alaska has been part of the US since its purchase from Russia in 1867. Alaska natives living in Alaska in 1867 and everyone born in Alaska since then is a US citizen.

Alaska became the 49th state in 1959.

  • My point is that Alaska was not part of the Union until 1959...

    it was during that time

like what Guam is to us now

Is Guam part of the USA???

    (thats my point)

  • Yes, Guam is a US territory. Are you seriously this ignorant? Please educate yourself in basic geography.

  • What? you idiot........

  • and nationalism continues its division....

  • @TMSpencer999 Can you not read? Are you STUPID?
