Of course abstinence would be more effective, but it's not realistic to expect everyone to stop having sex altogether. It's an absurd thing to expect an entire country to go along with. I'm catholic, but I find this whole abstinence-only approach to be extremely naive.
Great video. Another good reference is by a Harvard scholar Edward Green - he doesn't come down against condom usage per se, but he does say the Pope may well be right. If you google "harvard health professor agrees with pope" click the Washington Post link to read it.
And given the pathetic birthrates of atheists - they might as well not have one. It's the dustbin of history for those with a sex-drive but no children to show for it. LOL CATHOLIC STATE for me please :)
Well done and a good presentation and I agree with you! But how do we get the message to Non-Catholic Countries where the Our Faith carries no importance?
in my experience, most people who have it set in their mind that people will act like animals w regard to sex no matter what will not accept the facts about the efficacy of advocating behavior change. Sometimes humor is effective - "abstinence is possible - i'm doing it now!". but really and truly our first job is to educate Christians as many many practicing Christians themselves have fallen for the media groupthink and actually think distributing condoms helps.
Senior Harvard AIDS Prevention Researcher Dr. Edward Green
According to Dr. Green, science is finding that the media is actually on the wrong side of the issue. In fact, Green says that not only do condoms not work, but that they may be exacerbating the problem in Africa.
Dr. Green found that part of the elusive reason is a phenomenon known as Risk Compensation or Behavioral Disinhibition.

The root of the issue is people's ATTITUDE towards sex.

the pope didn't prove how condom were not solving the aids problem.
rape, lack of knowledge: how to use the condom and poverty : preventing to buy the condoms...might be a big factors in Africa.
since we all know you can't reuse a condom.
most people don't want to be abstinent, there's a thing called sex drive.

It's quite simple: If you don't have sex, you won't get a sexually transmitted disease.

You know, I don't even need to look at science.
Science proves that the Catholic Approach is the Correct Aproach.

I think its kind of funny that People are opposed Monagamy and Casual sex, the main cause of aids.
Scientific evidence will show that MONOGAMY, AND CASUAL SEX, ENABLE THE SPREAD OF AIDS.
If you give them the Desire, and a limited amount of Condoms.
Look at the Catholic Nations of Africa. Its a no brainer what looks.
