Actually price does increase the placebo effect so it wouldn't have the same effect (not that I in anyway condone their BS). Even things like packaging, quantity and colour of pills can change the effect too.
Power bands are made of softer rubber so they don't slide from your wirst and i'd use it as MP3 holder when i go jogging. And maybe they don't give any power to anyone but maybe my MP3 will play longer.. for 60 bucks it's worth a try.
@kierovnick Haha! Yes, at least your $60 will be well spent if you're looking to hold up your MP3 player. Or you could just invest $20 in a Velcro armband :p
Nicely done. Its an uphill battle getting people to think critically or scientifically if there is no money in it. Its also very difficult to jar people out of consumer mode. Everything in the field of health and healing is geared towards buying placebo products in alternative medicine and ineffective drugs in western medicine. People feel good when they buy something intended to better their health. They'd never guess they alone are in control of their immunity or healing w/o any product.
You're talking about Power Balance not PowerBands. Power Balance bracelets contain a hologram. PowerBands are made by another company and contain magnets.
It was clear to me even in the commercials that it was a scam. I went through a period in my earlier teens where I gullibly fell into new age beliefs for a time. But even at my worst I couldn't see myself falling for such a lame scam.
@PandyFackleresque You'd think so, but I go to a Christian college, so there are creationists everywhere. I don't have to encounter new age bullshit, just bullshit of a different variety.
I really want to make my pseudo-science that will convince everyone that they need to use Tesla Dildos and they would die from internal spontaneous combustion!
I've recently purchased the Q-Ray Bracelet™ and the Power Balance™ to: offset the pseudoscience awareness the Placebo Band™ provides me, fill my being with extra New Age spiritual energy and increase the ironic value of my overall personal paraphernalia.
You can buy a power band... or you can stop wasting your money and do something more productive, like spray painting your neighbour's cat or collecting insects and organising them into a minature version of mount Rushmore with daddy longlegs for Lincoln's beard.
The mind is a terrible thing to waste - but while big pharma see the placebo effect as something to overcome, and quacks see it as something to exploit, the full power of it probably won't be implemented.
something to overcome? Why? You can solve that problem at testing time by using a control group... and at the time of the implementation, it actually works for you! When a real doctor gives a patient a pill, he is not only giving the patient the tested treatement, he's also giving the patient the placebo effect...
I know, who am I kidding, the placebo effect sucks, but try to make friends with it, cause it's something that we probably won't be able to overcome ever.
@kaminarigaston "You can solve that problem at testing time by using a control group"
exactly, the use of the words "solve" and "problem" are what i'm talking about... it is partially understood, and then all attempts are made to reject its effects in order to derive an effective medication, without the thought of harnessing it as well. Don't get me wrong, i'm not criticising double-blind trials in and of themselves, but why do we leave it up to pseudoscientisis to profit from the effect?

I want one of this PowerBalance!
Placebo bands are nothing like it!
Power bands are made of softer rubber so they don't slide from your wirst and i'd use it as MP3 holder when i go jogging. And maybe they don't give any power to anyone but maybe my MP3 will play longer.. for 60 bucks it's worth a try.
And the name.. PPOWERRRbalance..
Say it aloud.. POWERRRRrrrrr...
Yess.. feel this energy from just saying it?

Placebo sounds weak..
