With sky high air fares now (no pun intended) there is a huge increase in Amtrak usage. Who wants to pay $500 for a plane ticket when they can pay $75 and just get there 2 hours later than they would taking a plane (in their case going from MD to CT)? I'm sure the filmmakers are on a limited budget & can't go all out & splurge for 1st class plane seats & put them up in a Ritz. They stayed at a HoJo & ate in pubs & diners. You'll comprehend when you become an adult & manage your own finances.
