  • Has to be one of the most beautiful haunting songs ever

  • For those looking for the song played on NPR's Car Talk, you want the Dixie Flyer LP version. It has guitar, percussion, and an extended instrumental outro.

  • Cartalk and NPR. Aloha and Mahalo, a hui hou - Keoni Faubionus

  • Umm..... Beautiful! Love this song!

  • Born right here, in November '43

On the same date as me! I love this song, it was magnificent performed live on Friday! :)

  • this ain't the version thats on my album

  • Click and Clack use a version of this song as interlude music on "Car Talk" on NPR. (Always wondered what that tune was!) The version they play has a really nice steel guitar part in it.

  • @JoeRailfan ....the version that you hear on NPR for Car Talk is directly from the studio LP, and that's Mark Knopfler from Dire Straits playing guitar on that, as well as several other tracks on that same LP...

  • Randy Newman is the genius of American pop music. His courageously quirky brilliance with music, lyrics and performance has passed the test of time, still non-PC after all these years.

  • very nice but I kinda like the non-accapella version better :)

  • I always think of my own family when I hera this song. I was bron in April '93, and when the Iraq War was raging, and my dad joine dup, my mum took me and my sisters to Newcastel to live with our Orthodox Jewish grandparents, who were tryign to hide their Jewishness in piblic. My grandfatehr wnet so far as to wear a fake nose that looked less "Jewish" as yhe put it.

But it was a different time back then.

  • Land of Dreams is, for me, his masterpiece. The only fault I can find with it is the presence of Jeff Lynne (I'm thinking of Falling In Love particularly). I'm also not entirely convinced that Knopfler brings out the best in other artists. Like his production job on Dylan's Infidels, and his distinctive guitar work, it keeps reminding me of Dire Straits. As a bunch of songs, though, Land of Dreams is impeccable.

  • @manlyduckling

I agree, everything is brilliant!!! Except for one thing: Masterman & Baby J. God, it's a travesty. But I don't agree that Lynne & Knopfler are faults, I think they bring out one of the many sides on Newman perfectly, his rocky/popy side. Falling in Love is one of my favourites of his. It's Money That Matters is a great perky tune that really brings out Newman's songwriting mastery. Land of Dreams of one of the most understated masterpieces ever, FACT.

  • @homerbialy ....I couldn't agree w/ you more in regards to your response to manlyduckling....I think Knopflers efforts on this LP make those songs shine...I don't think I have ever heard Knopfler guest on any song or LP where his addition didn't make that song sound better, like "Hey 19" by Steely Dan, or "Kings Call", by Phil Lynott.....

  • @manlyduckling fallin in love...aaaahhhh love that one the best ;)

  • @manlyduckling Not because Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits) and Jeff Lynne (Electric Light Orchestra) were British is it?

  • @adversecmbr No, Richard Thompson is British, Sandy Denny was British, lots of my favourite artists are British. It's more a case of the producer putting too much of a personal stamp on the sound of the record. If you listen to Infidels by Dylan, it again sounds like Dire Straits at times. Full Moon Fever by Tom Petty sounds like an ELO record. But hell...the songs on Land of Dreams are so great I usually get over it. And I think Masterman is a fantastic parody.
