Nonsense. The stereotype has nothing to do with the use of the term "tractor driver", but in fact, the conditions they work in. This video is essentially implying that the title "driver" isn't good enough. Imo this is an insult to all drivers in general. At the end of the day, ALL drivers require skill. The pilot analogy isn't valid because it's a completely different concept in the sense that planes are not even driven! Unfortunately, only prestigious jobs tend to command the highest respect.
Don't shoot the messenger! :) The Principal of Harper Adams made the suggestion and we reported on it. It's good to have your feedback but I'm not sure we deserve abuse.
PS You are right in that people are also combine operators, sprayer operatives etc but I've looked at the last two issues of FW and there are job adverts for 'tractor drivers' in both...
i beleive they fly aircraft but yes i agree we deserve a bit more respect instead of having this stereotype of farmer giles talks like a bristolian wears dungarees and a straw hat
o fuck off fwi you guys are turning into tossers as well, you never are called a tractor drivers. if your helping in harverst then your doing korn kart or if you operating the combine there you the combine operator. there is not a class system in farming, from the mangers and owners to the farm workers there no different, but from you guys at farmers weekly you seem to think there is. perhaps thats because your a journalist not farmers, stop telling us what we apparently think
What's wrong with 'tractor driver'? Unfortunately, the average 'city bloke' will still look at a tractor and see a 'country bumpkin', no matter what glorified title you give someone who drives a tractor. I think that farmers already take themselves seriously, they don't need a title to get that respect. Stupid nonsense.
