I was ordained as a Buddhist in April 1977 at the buildings you see on the left at 3,03 minutes in. We had many weekend retreat there. It was a former RN station.I was 27 then and now I am 61. Still practicing the Dharma. Danavira by name.
Visited this wonderful place today. Like going back in time, proper toy shop, a VG store, god this is like a childhood memory on it's own. Amazed at the people who have time (and the manners) to stop and say hello. Walke3d the whole island with my kids and was struck by the by gone era of the place that puts city life today into context. Stopped at Nardinis for a fish tea on the way back, life CAN be so simple and sweet. Thanks Cumbrae, made me realise what what I missed in life.
was amazing sittin watching this.i went to millport when i was 14 im now 23 n i cant wait to take my wee one there when hes born,i remember cycling around that island like 3 times with my wee cuz(speeding about like idiots on the bikes lol)..we couldnt find the granny n we were huntin about for her..was ace..i remember a wee cafe that was like a big hut..that sold rainbow coloured ice cream lol and i remember a chippie that was really awesome aswell, best place to getaway.tankyou 4 this vid x
Off there tomorrow. Haven't been for a bout 4 years, I've missed the old place. Few pints in Bobby's and to the top o'the island to shout, "Top o'the island ma!"
The one we always go to is Mapes which is on the seafront / main street. It also doubles as a novelty / joke shop and hasn't changed much since we went there a lot in the 60's.
It takes about an hour or so to cycle round the 11 miles if you don't stop.
This is great. I cycled round the island so many times in the sixties with my brother and sister when we went to visit my granny (she taught in the school and my granddad was the manager of the Bank (or Royal Bank, I am not sure which, but I think there was only one bank on the island then) of Scotland, until he died just before I was born.
I went back to Millport two summers ago with my mother and sister and must admit we found it a bit depressing compared to 40 years ago.

Yeah there is 3 different shops, they have around 700 bikes all together. You can hire them whenever you like.
Hope that helps.
