  • When Patti is on, she is ON....and this was ON, to say the least.

  • Patti is amazing :)

  • What a vibrato!

  • Still the most thrilling thing on a Broadway stage 30 + years later. Legend......

  • Okay....she just blew that one out like it was NOTHING! Wow.

  • This is amazing. Her voice is so powerful!

  • Patft lapomd tjurms me on

  • My ears are bleeding. Make it stop.

  • I like this so much better than the version on the cast recording. She's so fierce!

  • @albertj7 i would love to hear YOU shriek like that :)

  • ok, i didn't really understand anything. but damn, that was fierce and just incredibly fabulous :))

  • WOW!

  • This is the definition of fierce.

  • woooow !

  • Did anyone else see lea michele at the beginning? But we all know who has the deeper richer voice! :)

  • Patti "rush through song" Lupone

  • I feel horribly for any woman who ever had to audition after Patti Lupone. All I hear when she sings is "Bitches, go home. I've got this, thanks."

  • @ecl411 wow. i couldn't have said it better

  • pitchy. the whole way through. really, patti? really?

  • @blackmilkalicious BIT YOUR TONGUE!! This is perfect!

  • Im going on vacation today-to Florida for 2 weeks. Had to listen to this before leaving-though,I am something of a 2nd rate queen..........

  • belting is not a form of shouting, its a style of singing. she is sometimes not the nicest person but i wouldnt really call her arrogant, because when i've met her she was really nice it just depends on her mood i suppose.

  • I love her singing and acting but dear God she is so arrogant such a diva...ugh I'm torn...

  • @EZYCHEESY I've never seent an opera singer who belts. If I did I would demand my money back.

  • @EZYCHEESY Exactly. Belting is a form of shouting

  • Patti is the best Evita ever...listen to her growl!!!

  • wow

  • Scary woman. There's no need to shout every single line. Eva was a woman not a monster

  • @adam4757 True. Patti was amazing in this, but it's quite apparent that she didn't have much vocal training before this. Evita's not for the light hearted, the score is all over the place.

  • @theemaestro576 your right she didnt kno what she was doing.....shes said so in several different videos, she even smoked at the time.

  • Is she belting the whole thing? Or is it mix?

  • This is the clip that made me fall in Love with both Patti and Evita. <3

  • Good Lord. When the key change happens, you think..."Oh my God. She can't possibly hit the 'rainbooooooow hiiiiiigh' note again and yet....she nails it. Patti is fantastic.

  • @lcowles That certainly is the toughest female score I've ever heard in a musical. SO MUCH MUSIC and SUCH HARD MUSIC

  • Wowwwwwww. Blew me out of the water!! Amazing.

  • I liked the movie Evita, but Madonna didn't embody the feisty Evita the way that Patti Lupone did.

  • WOW! She gets it, she really gets it! Yes, she's 'yelling' (though vocally brilliant), have you ever heard a recording of the real Evita? She was shrill and strident. Patti nailed it, Madonna merely looked good. She simply doesn't have the pipes to carry off this real life, over-the-top I'm going to change the world character.

  • i still love madonna's version.

this one is too scary for the movies.

madonna made it elegant, regale, subtle and enigmatic.

  • @lightyears79 This is the way the song was meant to be sung, Madonna cant sing like this which is why her version is so tame, But Patti's version was Webber's vision of Evita.

  • Patti simply embodied Eva Peron for those 21 months that she played this part. She just WAS Evita. The struggles that she faced with performing it only added to the intensity, claustrophobia, and frenzy with which she played the character. Patti's Eva was an absolutely enigmatic and frightening monster. Listen to the real Eva's speeches. She was one powerhouse of a public speaker and the way with which Patti sang the role completely reflects that power.

  • Holy shiny jumpsuit batman XD

  • 2 people were so stunned by her talent that they missed the 'like' button.

  • madonna's version??? are you nuts. she has marketing, no fire. that's why patti lupone and mandy patinkin sell out at $140. talent, raw and fierce. what's missing on broadway. oh, everyone is technically good, but nothing memorable. go patti.

  • I sure would have loved to be in the audience. It had to be electric hearing this video in person! She is EVITA.

I agree with NewNick-her singing projection is theater, that's why everyone should see a theater performance at least once in their life. Very different from a movie.

  • this is amazing...but what the hell are you saying? dicton please!

  • @Puppies140 diction?? DICTION?! PATTI LUPONE?!

  • She may be crazy, but Patti LuPone sure owns this song like nobody's business.

  • She can still sing this great if not better and she has always looked great go Patti!!!!!

  • She's so fierce it brings tears to my jaded eyes.

  • beyond amazing

  • See Patti burst into flames on stage! God, she is just amazing

  • Good god thats a hard song it sounds like

  • @1037pm HARD is an understatement, its goes up to a womans E in FULL VOICE. She does it incredibly well!

  • Brillance.

  • I always remembered her singing DCFMA in Merv, guess I was wrong, but fell MADLY in love with her voice on that show!!!

  • Am I the only person that thinks she singing it a bit too fast?

  • When I was young we had to see the understudy, she wasn't fierce. That's how I see Eva, fierce, able to move the masses.

  • This proves that Patti is Jesus :)

  • Now.......I love Patti, but as an English boy I am biased towards Elaine Paige playing Eva, but this is a rousing version of Rainbow High............guess we are all patriotic............. would love to see Elaine do Gypsy here in the UK................

  • She's like The Grand High Witch!

  • I still prefer the Julie Covington version but Patti was lovely on this.

Has anyone seen the episode of "The Simpsons" where they spoof this musical and Lisa is singing an equivalent of this song? "So Osh Kosh begosh me!" lol

  • She is one of the reasons "Evita" is my fave musical of all time. And this is my fave song in the show.

  • Oh my god, I never knew this song could be so triumphant and powerful!!! This is amazing!

  • It's just fiercely different when Patti Lupone sings it. =)

  • @ChaoticBlossom This-is how we should all start our day !

  • AMAZING!!!!

  • This is EPIC!

  • yeah, this woman is pretty much amazing. an absolute theatre diva for sure, but hey, the lady got talent.

  • it's called theater

  • But it's not... it's called theatre. The PLACE is called a theater.

  • Oh puh-leeze. It's acceptable either way. I think "theatre" is rather pretentious.

  • @NewNickTahoe Damn right.

  • Amen!

  • ???

    she's gotta be RAINBOW HIGH

  • ???

absolutley not evita? you SO do not understand the show. there's a reason why they sing it like that.

  • fierce!

  • Boy did she ever just take my breath away and KILLED ME!

I would be so totally intimidated standing in front of her. LOOK AT THAT VOICE!!! Her voice says, "Step aside people, I'm about to show you how it's done!" HAHAHAHAHAHAHH

  • Let me think about it ... maybe because she DOESN'T ??

She sounds awesome. No, she sounds like Patti. I don't have to ad "awesome", this is clear ..

  • Maybe because she sounds incredible?

  • You're right that she's not comparable to Elaine Paige. Elaine is a joke compared to Patti...it's like the difference between amateur and professional theatre. I'm really sorry that you don't understand the difference between ridiculously good belting and shouting...your loss I guess.

  • But I do notice when somebody falls over the modulation.

  • Dude! Please, commenters like you need to be banned from youtube!

Saying that she sounds horrible is clearly just your opinion!!! Her loud and screaming voice is actually coming to me as POWERFUL!!! GOSH!!!!

  • i love it how she is pure FIERCE and then at the very end she just giggles and is like "oh im not THAT good"...

  • thanks for posting!

  • i love how the fountain starts running just as she gets ready to sing

  • 1:06 - 1:10

    :O

  • What a voice!!!!!

  • dyno-mite!

  • EVITA was the first broadway show that I ever attended. It was fantastic. Lupone was incredible in the role of Evita. She has the most amazing voice.

NewNickTahoe, thank you for the trip down memory lane.

  • WOW!!! She is so darn powerful!!!

  • the best is her little giggle at the end about 2:04

  • she is absolutely adorable here, and she's still beautiful. this is such a great performance!

  • For a boy who lives in a coal dusty little backwater in the worlds greatest backwater downunder growing up worshiping my original broadway cast recording worshipping Patti, worshipping that voice. To see this is proof of a good and benevolent god. A god by the name of ms Lupone.

Thank you Newnicktahoe thank you, thank you thank you.

  • Also, she was a little cutie back then.

  • Okay, so, it really, really pisses me off when people say Patti wasn't attractive in her day - she was lovely and had/has a rapier wit and a sparkling personality. Those - I guess you kids call them 'haters' - need to see this video - here, it all comes together.

  • I'm imagining that fountain started running because it knew Patti was near.
