  • wrong!

  • There's a reason why this very lay person who cannot create anyting, therefore he's paid to watch movies not films and when he sees a film is shocked.

  • This guy us just plain stupid. He has no idea what he's talking about. The film is a masterpiece.Like it or not, making or not making sense. I cant believe this guy even calls himself a critic.

  • film is a realistic medium? What about Melies, Fellini, Bergman's Persona? In fact what about art cinema as a whole - which has many variations of realism and symbolism, poetic and documentary. How did you get your job? It's bewildering to me. Don't review a film you don't understand to get yourself publicity when you clearly should stick to reviewing stuff that you understand and can be bothered to analyse adequately.

  • how many generalisations can one man make? and newsflash...he doesn't give two hoots about being commercially successful. do some research, do some analysis, that was a terrible 'review'

  • go see Twilight you peace of shit critic!'

why the heck do americans come at Cannes??

  • nice try, but no. America actually has to SEE this for it to have any effect.

  • This guy works at the coffee shop on my corner. Sometimes I tip him a nickel.

  • there was no laughing when i watched it honey... it is one of the most shaking movies i have seen in my life time. this guy must be a totallll idiot...

  • I think people make it so controversal because it's different and fun and people don't like different then there stupid comedy's they watch.

  • LOL I love the "northern European" attack.

GO FUCK YOURSELF UP HOLLYWOOD SHIT CREEK WHERE U CAME FROM BITCH !

  • easy man, they are american , they need the pinky flower movie or the good vs bad cowboy movie.

  • yeah man, i don't know what this critic is talking about.... anti christ was terrific comedy fair.

i would definitely recommend this film for anybody who wants to relax and have a good laugh or two.****

  • she screwed a grinding wheel to his leg with a pair of pliers...when's the last time you've seen something like that happen......c'mon...this movie was awesome, shocking, unique and overall beautiful piece of work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!---add it to your collection when the dvd comes out.

  • what a douche

  • lick my balls peter. you have no talent, not even to be a critic, imagine doing a film as actually standyng in front of the world with your own ideas, instead of this cheap ass culture metropolitan speech, get a life motherfucker.

  • Larses movie is a good acary one and gives a lot of things to think of, I like the movie and its groteskness. I would say that the movie is a pice a art and where some can't see anything in the film others can, it's a matter of prospective. I like that Lars says that you dont have to see it, its your own choice to do XD

    (Sorry for the spelling btw)

  • anybody could say what the reviewer has said

    pitiful

  • commercial film? thank the fuck no

  • sameone so the ufo behaind de de actor?

  • At least an idea every five seconds. Independence day had fewer. Have fun.

A lot of the audience was laughing where they werent supposed to. Theres nothing to laugh at in this movie except, maybe, at your ridiculous presence in the theater.

Usual misogyny. Now you became a bit politically correct.

Commercial movie. Von Triers never wanted to be. BTW, did you use your phone cam? The quality of this vid is a serious matter concerning the professionalism of you job.

  • yeah, that was an interesting criticism. who the fuck saw this and thought 'ha! this thing is going to BOMB at the local AMC 20!'??

  • a realistic medium....

  • this reviewer, is a simple fool

  • since when does film have to be representative of a realistic medium.

  • well of yours the cannes audience would laugh in parts. there so up there own arse they can smell there own shit.

  • i agree, arseholes the lot of them.

  • I consider the Exorcist as the greatest horror movie ever and when they re-released it into the cinemas a few years back I went to watch a viewing, and unfortunately there were dickheads then laughing at moments that arent supposed to be funny. The kinda dickheads who think the Scream trilogy is great. I look forward to this movie when it comes out.

  • Hello I am peter brunnette and I am stupid, UGLY bastard

  • hello im peter brunnette and im a cock.

  • Well I'm one of the audiance and I don't think that movie was bad as you discribed.. and no one was laughing at cenima, I don't know your name but you look scary, you should be the main character of the Antichrist lol

  • this film is NOT about nature being evil. it is simply deconstructing the very human notion that nature is beautiful, empathetic or nurturing. for me this film exposed life itself as a cruel and self destructive mistake, one only needs to look through a telescope or microscope to see that death and decay is the only common denominator in the universe. liked how it was constantly alluding to neopaganism and then deconstructing/destroying the imagery.. FUBAR! left me stunned. :D

  • very well said

  • You sound like a lonely, bitter, self hating individual lol Get help while you still can lol

  • Oh man, why do the Americans even try to understand these european movies? Go back to your ABC view of the world and leave the rest of us to enjoy it.

  • Are you trying to make Europeans seem more open-minded? That's kind of ironic.

  • Is that ironic in the Alanis Morissette way?

  • It's just ignorant to say Americans are close minded when they made some of the best and most unique movies ever. Not so much now, but the numbers are there. It's also close minded to generalize like that. Calling a large group of people close minded based on a few people the BBC or whatever shows, just happens to be a little close minded. That kind of ironic.

  • Oh that kind of ironic, like America is a peaceful nation; the same America that has been at war with one country or another every year since World War II - that kind of ironic. I get ya'.

  • That has nothing to do with anything. It's close minded to call a group of people close minded when there's no doubt there are open minded people among them. Don't generalize. And I'm not from the US, so you're not offending me though it seems like you're trying. I'm just saying it's ignorant to criticize a whole country when there are plenty that understand the film.

  • It has everything to do with it when one nation acts like they know what's best for everyone else. I personally don't give two hoots if you think I'm closed-minded or not but you seem to hold double-standards.

"I'm not from the US, so you're not offending me though it seems like you're trying". For the record, I never thought about your nationality for one second. You're accusing me of jumping to (in your opinion) unjustified conclusions and yet you're guilty of the same.

  • I just meant that you're attacking an entire country as if it's going to annoy me. It just seemed like it. Again you're saying an entire nation acts a certain way. There are plenty of people that were against many of the stupid decisions being made. By your logic I could say Germany is a country full of raging murderers, and psychopaths. And how could a country made up entirely of close minded people make some of the best movies of all time?

  • "...you're attacking an entire country as if it's going to annoy me." No. All countries act in a certain way. A country is like a person. A country is led by it's politics & it's political leaders. Germany was an anti-semitic nation for 200yrs before Hitler; he just let those people finally live their dream. And India is an incredible spiritual nation because of it's beliefs. If you want to argue individualism go ahead, but it's not how history 's been. Maybe a better future beckons us all...

  • wow. a debate about politics and nations from a guy talking about a film. how the hell did we get here people????

  • Let me know when you have the answer. ;)

  • because that is the power of cinema! :)

  • I thought we were talking about movies. Indians swim in rivers with corpses, and live with monkeys. Some of the most hideous deformities are straight out of India. I can consider you guys spiritual but I find it hard to ignore the abundance of filth. But I don't consider the whole damn country to be sick. But I could.

  • I comment about the lack of Americans' (in general - just for you) inability to absorb or understand the finer points of so-called "art-house movies" (they call them that I don't!)

U take it to another level, then complain when I reply to your conversation. U mentioned Germany, remember?

"I don't consider you guys"...? Another assumption. I'm not Indian. Now u moan we're no longer talking about the movie so stop trolling and discuss the movie or move on. Pretty simple really and far less boring

  • I'm not going to ignore what you said. I said I thought we were talking about movies. We weren't anymore because you weren't. I assumed you were Indian because your profile says you're from India. Also, "The lack of Americans' inability..."? What? And this is indeed a waste of time. The only thing I should have said was "It's hypocritical to say an entire country is close minded. It makes you sound close minded". I'm done.

  • Happy you've finally got all that off your chest, even if it's only to repeat yourself. U didn't like my original comment, so that's something u need to deal with, I mean, I didn't ask u to comment! U do realise everyone is allowed their own personal opinion, don't u? For u to say my opinion is wrong just because it doesn't agree with your world-view and I shouldn't have that opinion is, as u would say yourself, close-minded, but I'm happy you're done and are satisfied with yourself.

  • who the hell does he thinks he is, to decide whether the audiance is supposed to laugh or not? Mr. von Trier has a great sense of humour, that's a side effect of his great intelligence. Something Mr. Burnette here seems to lack completely.

  • What can one expect from a Hollywood reporter, where the bottom line is all that counts. English language viewers just like cliche'd mass entertainment. They have never seen film as an art form.

  • He notes audience were laughing in moments they shouldnt..

when i saw it in the movie house yes people were laughing... however they were in the most challenging moments of the film... this laughter is good, its uncomftable laughter... its the laughter one deals with when face front with deeper unnervings!

this critic should open his perspective a little further and see how rich with symbolism the movie is...

Film does not and should not just be only a realistic medium...

  • I completely agree. I saw it last night I admit there was some uncomfortable laughter on my part as well. I don't think there are any moment in this movie where you are acutally supposed to laugh. Nonetheless, it's a beautiful movie.

I totally disagree with the critic that von Trier's ideas doesn't work. But maybe I understand the symbolism better because I'm Danish? Who knows..

  • He should smoke a joint before his next screening!

  • He'd shit his pants then.

  • Comment removed

  • Està maleïda broma?

  • Oh yeah, mr "God bless America"....?

  • The Hollywood Reporter's "film critic" wants us to know that, "film is a realistic medium". Thanks so much!

It's hard to imagine a more inaccurate, less idiotic, perspective on cinema.

We might as well be watching such fascinating film subjects as trains arriving in stations, gentlemen riding bicycles, or ladies trying on hats.

Would this "critic" would care to explain what nearly every great filmmaker from Griffith to Kubrick to Von Trier ought really to have been doing with their talent?

  • haha I have just seen the movie and I think Peters criticism is enormously incorrect. The movie was extremely well done and Lars Von Triers ideas are brilliant. Why wouldnt a northen European theme be succesful? You are an idiot, it seems to me like you havent actually watched the film. -.- Peter I dont know which movie you have reviewed, but definitely not Antichrist..

  • You've never been precisely reknowned for your fine taste in filmaking anyway, Peter. So this critique is quite expected from you. Go see the re-make of Mary Poppins now.

  • proffesor?

how can you be so vindictive and make spelling mistakes redundantly.

you are such a funny person.

  • Everybody's funny when he writes a comment after a couple of beers :P (and everybody makes mistakes in such situations).

You would be too. Believe me, i'm sober right now. How can I be so vindictive? Well, who can't? In my opinion if someone gives an account of such a big event like Cannes is, he should be neutral. But no. Peter Brunette is reviewing "Antichrist" right here. This is a review? This is a gibberish, not more. I've never seen a worse and more pathetic review in my life.

  • How can you be a proffesor? Who gave you this title??

You know, american movies are a bit different that others. Most of them sucks (Lets say 80%). Worse is only Bollywood. So now tell me, how a person from country, where cinematography is deteriorating for every single year, can give me reliable information.

For me you're shouldn't work in your proffesion.

  • Unfortunately i have to say you're pathetic. You're a reviewer. Well, I have a little advice for you. Try something else, for example upgrating your appearance. This movie is too complicated for most of American filmmakers, reviewers and other guys from this business.

I think you did not realized that there is someone like Lars von Trier until you'd came to Cannes.

How can you be a proffesor? Who gave you this title??

  • idiots laugh in despair

  • jesus, what an arbitrarily name dropping ignorant idiot. I didn't even see antichrist yet, but this review sucks in and off itself. Go fetch a job at Burger King, moron.. hollywood review? they must be sleeping..

  • I'd like to see the film, and I appreciated this critic's honest opinion. It didn't strike me as bad in any way, just his view of the film. I'm still intrigued enough to want to see it.

  • Oh i figures it out. He's from hollywood. Thats why he rambles on about commercial succes, northern european ideas, the audience reactions, to musch symbolism. He is thinking about the audience instead of the movie. Maybe thats why Hollywood keep making movies which are highly forgetable but looks great in the trailer.

  • And why does he care about the audience launging at certain points? So a fox starts talking at some point...hey, the movie is called "antichrist", so it couldn't really be reality-based, could it? What kind of critic is this?

  • I havn't seen the film yet but this dude is laughable. "Film is a realistic medium"..where does he come up with this stuff? Some of the best films are highly un-realistic. "Symbols every 5 second"..i hardly think so. "It doesnt work...its very interesting"...make up your mind already. It clearly left an impression on him and he has to get all intellectual about it.

  • "I havn't seen the film yet"

You should have stopped talking there.

  • Point taken. Thankfully i have a right to anything i want. And so do you.

  • Point taken. Thankfully i have a right to say anything i want. And so do you.

  • how does this guy know when the audience is supposed to be laughing?

  • ... Isn't that obvious? Its not a comedy, laughs should be very minimal if any. If the audience is laughing then it implies that the scene has fell flat and hasn't had the intended effect.

  • I've seen the film now. I don't know which segments of the film the reviewer is referring to, but some parts of the film are actually quite humorous - intendedly!

Von Trier is known for his sarcastic humor, and I'm suspecting that this reviewer didn't understand/like the "funny" scenes.

  • If Sam Raimi taught us anything, its that horror and comedy are not much different from each other. I haven't seen the movie yet but it is possible that the sensationalism of the violence was meant to make you uncomfortable enough to make you laugh.

Another example. People laugh during the rape scene in Clockwork Orange, does that mean the scene falls flat? No, because that was it's intention.

  • If Sam Raimi taught us anything, its that horror and comedy are not much different from each other.

Totally agree, he even said once the Evil Dead was just a Three Stooges movie, with blood and guts

  • what the hell is that thing flying over the upper right part in minute 1:01....????????

  • Not sure, looks like a gull.

  • is it a bird? is it a plane? no.. it's a bird!

  • The last shred of his credibilty

  • Well, I strongly disagree....I saw the movie on wednesday and its a very strong movie...

You don't feel good when you leave the cinema but its a very powerful film that invokes feelings inside everybody

  • but i dont have a closet.....

  • A lot of the audience was laughting when they weren't supposed to be laughing.

This guy obviously has a very personal p.o.w. on what an audience is.

  • you have not seen the movie

  • So what? An audience always laught when they are supposed to laught. Not when Peter Brunette think they should or shouldn't laught.

  • I am happy that people agree with my critique of the review although a bit emotional I think that this is stupid. I watched the movie after a buddy of my had said that it "parts the waters at cannes" (politically or whatever) and I can say that those offended by this film are people who are looking to be offended. It is a great horror movie, but one should be careful always to drag examples of individuals and apply them to groups of people (in this movie the female lead and women in general)

  • Film is a realistic medium? Did a ' film critic' just say that? Is this for real or just some douchebag with a Sony Handicam gatecrashing Cannes movie premieres? It looks semi-professional - apart from the guy with the microphone talking crap.

  • We have Aqua, Michael Rasmussen and Lars von Trier. What more can we ask for in Denmark

  • fuck michael rasmussen han bruger doping ligesom alle andre cykelryttere.. aqua? HAH et halvfemser band er aldrig brude være kendt

vi har mange ting at være stolte af, du give rbare nogle latterlige eksempler

  • It doesn't get any better!

  • I want my 1:11 min. back!

  • lol... Film is a realistic medium... Peter Brunette you prove to be a great intellectual once again with your ignorant commentary. This has to be a joke, film is about as realistic as writing (which is not very). This review is disappointing, especially considering the film received 6 stars in my local newspaper today..

  • Word.

  • Whatever, I can't wait to see it.
