  • If I understand correctly from Wikipedia Endgame Tablebase article, this is the position with the highest known DTC (Depth to Conversion), i.e. play until white manages to capture a piece. Is it also the position with the highest known DTM (Depth to Mate)?

  • There were so many oppertunities for white's queen to take various pieces!

  • @TheDarkSide599 actually if u look close enough u would see the peices were guarded

  • At around 3.43, can't black sacrifice its rook for the knight and set up a fortress at the corner?

  • @medicca no that can only be done when the white king is in the corner trapped

  • For those wondering about the 50 move rule, it is not required that either opponent claim a draw because of the 50 move rule, but it is there if they want it. So this problem is not illegal.

  • i threw this position into my Chessmaster 10thEd. program and it doesn't even come close, Draw by threefold every time, anyone know why?

  • @KBoogs719 Why would it? Chessmaster doesn't see 500 moves (ply) ahead or has a 7 piece endgame database.

  • The longest mate ever composed you can find here on youtube.com under : NEWEKLOWSKY

  • This is illegal because of the 50 move law, isn't it?

  • The longest mate ever composed you can see here on youtube.com

BASING on 6-men-tablebases is 267, BASING on 7-men-tablebases is 530

or simply give in my name on youtube.com : NEWEKLOWSKY

kindly regards Lutz Neweklowsky from Karlsruhe, Germany

  • black's last 8 moves were suboptimal.

clearly the sequence is an as-yet-un-analyzed 7-man case so you artificially transpose it into a simple solved 6-man one.

it's probably a mate in about 800 moves but black may have subtle resources on the opposite colored corner that save the draw

  • @sharpnova2 maybe he just got tired.

  • @steinarbeddari lazy imo. and it shouldn't be called a mate in 524 moves. that implies perfect play.

  • Nope, the fifty move rule says that if both players don't take anything or move a pawn for at least 50 moves, any of the players CAN claim a draw.

  • Would the match not end according to the 50 move roule? and end aot in a remis

  • Yes, black could have declared a draw according to the fifty move rule.

Originally, before such long endgames had been discovered, it was believed that 50 moves was plenty for all winnable positions. Once a few endgames were discovered that took longer, FIDE actually extended the 50 move rule for certain positions at one point. Eventually computers began revealing hundreds of such situations, and FIDE restored the original fifty move rule. This rule may not apply to computers, though.

  • tablebases can't factor in the 50-move rule.

this is based on 7-man TB's, hence why it's not the "longest human-authored mate"

  • My dear father, Mr. Bourzutschky. Very absorbed in his work. He is doing 4 Bishops vs. 2 Rooks now, the first 8-man they (Bourzutschky and Konoval) have tried.

  • Impressive. But black missed 412...Rc1! which would have prolonged the game another 86 moves.

  • Are you sure of that ?

  • What is the music?
