  • "Obviously one person can't be a massive fan of everything." - Actually I disagree. There is one person. Her name is Taekia. :)

  • AHHHHH you need to watch merlin TIZ AMAZING!!@!!

  • "You've heard of that, right?" <-- what I got out of this.

Actually, just kidding. Can't tell you how much I appreciated this, you basically confirmed my feelings on this entire topic.

  • @genevive429 Sometimes I make jokes when I don't mean to.

  • Its okay I haven't heard of/seen half the things you mentioned. I'm still a proud nerdfighter. While I do love HP (obviously) and Doctor Who, I don't think they're necessities to be a nerdfighter or whatever. I sometimes feel a bit un-nerdy because I'm not really into video games though.

  • Thank you so much for this video. Sometimes I make Doctor Who references, but I've actually only seen a few episodes. Some terminology and vocabulary is so mainstream in Nerdfighteria and the internet that it's not hard to pick up on at least some of it. Plus, I can't agree with anyone who says being a fan of Harry Potter or DW is vital to being a nerdfighter. (And I have heard those claims.)

  • @allshalldelight There was a time in my life when I was separately a fan of John and Hank, Alex and Charlie and other YouTubers without knowing that any of them were aware of each other or that any of them liked Harry Potter. The day I figured it out was possibly the most mind blowing day of my life. In other words, totally not requisite that you like HP or DW to be a Nerdfighter.

  • There's also the fact that one person just doesn't always have the time to get into everything all at once! Jumping into a new random takes time...not just experiencing it (whether it's reading books or watching TV shows) but what fans have done around it in terms of websites, music, cons, and more! So yes, I completely agree that we're all just striving to get there.

  • at least watch AVPM/S and i wont be mad at you :)

  • What you said about Maureen Johnson completely applies to me, lol. And this was a great video full of truth.

  • Lauren, this video is perfect. You are my new hero.

  • @siriusismyhero Does that mean I'm Sirius? Because I'm totally okay with that.

    -lauren

  • @thehpalliance I just tried to like this ala Facebook. I have spent far too much time on Facebook today. *facepalm* But yes, I believe it must!

  • Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you!!! I'm so glad you made this video it is all so true.

  • When people accuse me of being a poser I say 'I listen to music, I don't study it'. Like if I like The beatles, surely I don't have to read their wikipeadia page to call myself a true fan. u shud watch avpm tho, u don't have to but it's amazing!!!!

  • you said this very well

  • YES. I am so sick of all the rock-throwing that goes on here in the interwebs.

10,000 POINTS TO (insert name of house here)!!!!!!!!

  • That's fine. I don't watch much TV. I haven't seen any Doctor Who since I left England in August, and I didn't see Sherlock until it just came on PBS, even though I have read nearly all the Sherlock Holmes stories. Merlin? Would like to, but I haven't seen a single one. And you should not read the Hunger Games unless you want to read 3 books full of bad writing.

  • This is so true. You really should get on watching and reading those things though because they are all so good. I first discovered fandom back when the internet was at my fingertips in the form of Harry Potter fan fiction and I was pretty bad because I was like 11 when I started but now I am almost 20 and an English major because of the support of people reading my fanfiction. If I was shunned for being a "noob" I wouldn't be where I am today.

  • THERE'S A NEVILLE LONGBOTTOM DANCE?!?!?! I MUST KNOW IT! lol

And I totally agree with you, I've only read the first Hunger Games book and I'm working on the others but I'm still a huge fan!

P.S. I completely recommend the Totally Awesome "A Very Potter Musical" mostly because of the supermegafoxyawesomehot cast. (You'll get those references if you watch it! ;D )

  • @WateverWatever04 If you go to a Whomping Willows show, you'll learn the Neville Longbottom dance. There are even t-shirts.

I actually already say supermegafoxyawesomehot and totally awesome and I know all about Red Vines and Headmaster Efron. It's amazing what you don't have to watch thanks to gifs on tumblr ;]

  • ill admit it.....the only harry potter book ive read is the deathly hallows...ive been trying to read the other books but its hard 4 me 2 read a book after ive seen the movie.this causes people to call me a"fake fan" yet im more dedicated to hary potter then some of the people who i know who have read the complete series. maybe im a poser but both the harry potter movies and the book i read are amazing and have made me a commited member 2 the HPA chapter at my school

  • This needs to be put on Tumblr. Intra-fandom wars are rather common there.

  • I haven't really seen any of Sherlock, Merlin, or much of Doctor Who. But from what I've followed online, I do know things about them, and I like them.

  • When you were naming Disney Movies, I was thinking, "Oh god, oh god, don't say the Lion King", and you didn't, hence how you are still awesome

  • @TheyCalledMeHunter Nah man I've seen all the cool ones like The Lion King and Peter Pan and The Sword and the Stone!

    -lauren

  • I agree! Ive never seen Buffy or Communtiy or 30 Rock. I just can't keep up with that many fandoms right now. It doesn't mean I don't believe you that they're good. I'm not an idiot or a "fake nerd" if I don't know those things

  • I've only read ONE John Green book. Two if you count Will Grayson Will Grayson with David Levithan. I love him and his writing…I just haven't gotten to them yet. But he is still one of my favorite authors, not just because his excellent writing, but because of who he is. I also say that Maureen Johnson is one of my favorite authors, though I haven't gotten to her books either. I'm a slow reader. And a poser. :D

  • @itsapearproductions I usually count Will Grayson Will Grayson as a half. :)

  • every day i'm posin'. yeah, i agree, people get a lot of crap for not being a "real" fan etc. Like whaaat? You didn't start watching John and Hank on January 1st 2007? poser. (o.k. so i haven't met any nerdfighters who were there the day they started but w.e.). This ideaology seeps into every community and it is so pointless. You should be happy someone aspires to be like you and like the things you like. Let that unknown band you kidnapped in your basement go. -julian

  • @ItTakesII ideology*

  • At first I wasn't really sure about this video. Because I don't tend to congregate with people in Fandoms that I'm just starting out in. But then I realized that is true. 100 percent. Because I just became a nerdfighter 6 months ago and I only read the hunger games, less than a month ago and I identify as lovers of those two things. But I'm still just starting, my way into the crazy world of fandom love for them. So yes, I am a poser.

  • Who the hell doesn't own the Whomping Willows' entire discography????

But really, this is a great video Lauren, but we need to work on some of that stuff :P

  • One of the most eloquently put youtube videos ever.

  • I loved this video. I'm definitely a poser! I think the best thing about having this well of excitement around specific books or movies or TV shows that IS fandom, is having tons of people at the ready to introduce you to the things you're curious about. However, people are often so afraid of appearing behind-the-times that they can't take advantage of it and that sucks. So, I'm a poser :)

  • Great video. I don't think I've ever been actually called a poser, but I definitely felt pressured to know more than I did when I first started getting into the Harry Potter fandom. Not so much actual canon stuff, but fandom stuff like AVPM and wrock and what LeakyCon was. It didn't take long for me to figure that stuff out jsust by being in the fandom, fortuantely.

  • This was really freakin good.

  • @sharkie59 Xie xie!

    -lauren

  • I haven't watched a bunch of Disney classics too. I just didn't grow up with them. I definitely recommend Merlin and Sherlock.

  • @hpiznxt2myheart I actually have watched the first episodes of both of those and I really like them. I'm a huge fan of both medieval literature and the original Sherlock Holmes stories. I just... yeah, haven't watched any more for some reason.

    -lauren

  • I completely agree. People often seem to act like there's a right amount to know about something, or a right character to love. But I must say- the stuff you haven't seen? Definitely worth trying out. Just FYI. But yeah, I think old fans can be very elitist.

  • Thank God for this. I can't possibly know everything about every fandom! (But seriously, please watch AVPM and AVPS. They're hilariously awesome, and will expand the way you see the HP universe.)

  • I'm a poser. I'm loud, and I'm proud. \m/

  • Soooo, I saw someone that looked A LOT like you at the Tour de Nerdfighting in Albuquerque. I mean, I was this close to going up and asking if it was you. Seriously, she was your doppelganger.

Second, I agree with you 100%. If you knew EVERYTHING about ALL the nerdy fandoms you'd have little time for anything else. Doesn't make you less of a fan. In fact, it's more exciting for you because you're just discovering it.

  • @kittygurl212 I am sad to say that I didn't make it to the Tour de Nerdfighting in any city, but that's awesome that I have a doppleganger in Albuquerque. I should contact her and make her do things I don't want to do in NM.

    -lauren

  • Can I throw a hug at you instead?

  • I think you make a lot of great, intelligent points in this video. But seriously, Very Potter Musical... Get on that.

  • I have a very vivid memory of "poser" being used against me. When I was in middle school (I'm 27 now) I was unpopular, like untouchable-unpopular. Mostly it was my clothes. Money was tight and all my clothes were secondhand. But once a year I got new clothes from Old Navy usually just a few shirts. And I wore them to school, proud, thinking I'd receive a little less assault.

The popular kids made MORE fun of me because I was a "poser" and trying to "pretend" to be popular.

  • @angelcollina Yeah, exactly! The reasons people were accused of being "posers" always seemed so backwards to me.
