for a long pass it depends on he direction or the manner in which you're approching the ball.

generally:

with it coming towards you, you use your instep to kick the ball, hiting underneath the ball and leaning backwards, no need to really follow through.

with a dead ball, like alonso's in this video, hit with the laces, again under the ball but now follow through and aim where you want it to go. Work on accuracy and NOT power, you get greater distance by hitting it sweetly - a loft pass
