its a wicked tune & for the era it was very powerful as all ians and tony, geez & bills together was..i bet if anything they had alot of good times creating in the studio & hanging & partying!!! this song kicks fuckin ass!!!!
the story behind this is funny. tere was an old church near where ian and sab were rehearsing, and the vicar stops by and says "cold you boys keep it down between 3 and 4, wehave this choir practice..." the band liked the guy, who was very affable and complimented their music, and respected his wishes, bt geezer got this wicked and fnny song title from the incident, lol.
@TheSavageMaggot Are you trying to be funny? The"h" and "u" keys on my keyboard are tricky so there were some typos. Meanwhile, in a post in which you call me an "asshole" and "dumb ass" because of those typos, you write "lern" and "listern", lol.
@dasbootydan well i wasn't there, and i don't recall where i first heard/read the account, but the following is from wikipedia's page about the song, attributed to Gillan:"We were in loud playback mode, with the door open...When the track ended I was surprised to see a nervous vicar standing in the doorway. He explained how wonderful he thought the music was, but they were having choir practise... (continued in subsequent post)
@dasbootydan (continued) in the adjacent village church and so would we mind closing the door…? I apologised immediately, we got hold of his schedule and never worked again during those times. The following evening I had a few beers with the vicar and signed some autographs for the choir. It was Geezer who came up with the title as we were laughing about the story some days later."
Tony Iommi tells the story in his book about how this song came to be. It was based on a real event in which Ian Gillian set off some of Sabbath's pyrotechnic bombs that were in Tony's barn and the local vicar (priest) came by with a signed petition to try and make him leave. Thus, "Disturbing The Priest."
@brnleague99 According to what i heard, it was during the recording sessions they were performing so loud they were interrupting choir practice for the church across the street. And the preacher came and asked them to close the doors (since the rooms are soundproof) and they obliged. This song doesn't really have anything to do with it past that though.
Man this was a fun time for music, although this album still blows me away with it's darker overtones- WICKED, We saw Deep Purple, with original lineup in like feb of '85- Sabbath as well, Iron Maiden, ***Actually Bon Jovi opened up, and was BOOOOOD of the stage! all true
my favorite sabbath singer and record.just saying...ozzy and ronnie were amazing as well, but theres something about the songs that blew me away.just a thought..
@208494ski All matter's what your taste in music is, it's clear you dont apreicate good music (and I suppose we'll respect that.) But its pointless to go on a video and say "This sucked" cause of course there would be attention drawn to that comment. Personally, I adore this song, I'd like to see you be able to hit such high notes, and make such immaculate lyrics.
Just imagine...tripping on acid with some high school friends back in '86. I was staring at a mound of wriggling earthworms when this INSANE laughter BOOMED down at me from the heavens. The force of it drove me to my knees and then I realized...it was Ian Gillan from the opening of "Disturbing The Priest!" Ah, what a night!
The reason we have so many arguements over the singers for this band is a few reasons: Lyrics are important and we all know who writes the lyrics for this band. Also, musicianship is top notch in Sabbath. Therefore, as long as the singer does a reasonable job, Sabbath can always pull it off. Now, I'm not sayin' using Gillan was just pullin' it off, nor any of the other singers they used...I'm just saying that without Geezer and Iommi, no Sabbath.
this is the most wicked song sabbath ever beacuse of gillan but ozzy is the great og and dio was dam good shit there all good in there own way !!!!!! rip dio !!!
The rolling stone magazine, although i hate them because of that crap top guitarists list, actually gave this album a good review. Furthermore to black sabbath fans it is a favorite, they produced some great songs on this albums. You can't argue who's better, Ozzy, Dio, Gillan. They are all great, The original black sabbath did have the best music but Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules are bloody good and so is this album. Black Sabbath rules, whoever it is
@Corleonetone What??? I can't believe you just typed that. I can't believe you thought that. Gillan's voice is incredibly powerful. He's a beast dude!!!!
My favorite song from this album, and a great sabbath overall. Happy that Gillan and Iommi are working together again but wish it were on another Sabbath album. Gillan and Dio are the 2 best voices for Sabbath, and since a a new album with the original 4 seems unlikely, another one with these guys would be awesome.
@BeatleStone Exactly. This is a good album, but it's not a real Black Sabbath Album. Neither are the Dio albums, and they are probably the best Metal Albums there ever were.
They don't need Ozzy to be Great, but they need Ozzy to be Black Sabbath.
@mpokey73 Yeah its sad that most kids today only get to hear" Iron Man" (probably my least favorite sab Song) I mean if those kids heard Hole in the sky or Disturbing once...they'd probably curl into fetal position due to the shear magnitude of the heavyness of those tracks!!!!!!
it's still the original Sabbath, just a different singer. If anything, I always thought Gillan brought back that "evil" vibe that Sabbath started out with but seemed to lose over the years ('technical ecstasy' through 'mob rules')
I was reading an Ian Gillan interview in which he explaned the origins of this song saying that they rented an old church to rehearse in under one condition : the priest who still resided there was allowed to stay (church stuff) so anyway this priest would come up several times a day to complain about the noise and so they named this song disturbing the preist.... strange but true
It's not truly Sabbath without the original lineup, but this is great stuff. Only probablem is they didn't rename the band. Small price to pay, I guess...
opinionated as i am, i must say this is the best sabbath album of all time. ozzy rules. dio surely held his own and was a true gentleman in his time.... neither can scream like ian...or take the time to write these kind of lyrics. listen to this album start to finish you will definitely appreciate it.
Well, lots of opinion here being sold as fact. Bunch of ignorant folk. Face it your taste is born of your hunger for the dard and seedy side of things. I've left for the ligher side of the universe. Sorry, but I can't see one of you from here, gotta log on here to hear and gaze at how the dark and bark are screaming in the miazmic haze of smhell. Bub-bye....ya....bubb-bye.
Underrated Album. Great line-up. One more from them would have been great. Powerful voice. This track is excellent. Wish they had video to go with this track.
AWESOME album...OH, the memories....Love entire body of Sabbath work.....THIS one was special, though and perhaps instead of using the Sabbath name - could have been marketed as a "super group".....Deep Purple, Sabbath, and Rainbow have all been respectably interchangeable personnel of each other's line-ups...Did see the Deep Purple Perfect Strangers reunion tour the following year after Born Again release....
This is a highly under-appreciated era of Black Sabbath. One album..one tour. For me, it's the last really strong Sabbath album besides the last one with Ronnie (The Devil You Know). Just think that Ian Gillan played Jesus in "Jesus Christ Superstar".
@jlr41877 i agree except for its heaven and hell, born again, then mob rules all of them are great albums tho, and the 4th best of the 80s is headless cross i think
This song needs to be appreciated the correct way, with the INTRO that leads into it "Stonehenge". It sounds much better with the intro leading into the evil laughs rather than it starting as a track on its own..just so everybody knows...
I received this in a cassette, on my birthday back in 1985. I was surprise because a married woman, friend of my parents gave it to me as a gift.!!! My first BS stuff. sorry I have lost that cassette. A Classic album.
@heryblax Great Album,I love this LP,I got my copy at age 11 in 1986 from a Buddy named Shawn Smith, then 15 years old.,copied me this LP on an old Maxell CrO 2
I don't give two royal shits what ANYONE says about this grossly misunderstood album....Gillan stepped in and delivered some KILLER vocals on this album...every song has that classic Sabbath groove and several of 'em have SHITLOADS of atmosphere and some great layered textures....Gillan's screams and wails on this is the stuff of legend!! The title track alone is worthy of the title 'EPIC.'
@argavus to hear that Ian himself would make such a statement is truly sad,But Political,You know, Just to clear the way for the next guy. But had this album been recorded under a different name...lets say Gillan,Butler,Iommi & Ward.It would've gone down as one of the most Dark and Powerful things ever heard, I mean really just sit and listen to this album start to finish....F'n HEAVY...HEAVVVVVVY.
Thanks Ian,some people didn't "get it"...But I did!
@ewag67 I was just making a statement about the politics of it really, I'm Glad this got the Sabbath name, This is a top three sab albums for me in no order... Sabotage,Live evil,Born Again
@ashenhooves Part of it may have been because Ian said he only did this album for the money and never liked this kind of music anyway. It's hard to say really, but this song is total badass. It's a shame it doesn't get the audience it deserves. It's IMO the most evil song on this album and that is a damn good thing! \m/
@Fretslayer even if Ian sang a toilet paper commercial (for the money) it would still be the sickest toilet paper jingle, sang by one of the sickest vocalist ever. Even not caring (if its true) he managed to kick just about everybodys ass straight to hell!!!
Most evil album Sabbath ever did, and they did it without "the prince of darkness"! Nazareth's "Hair of the Dog" is another one that is overlooked as an entire album.
@ashenhooves so true..my first concert that i seen was this ..a looong time ago .ian was so fucked up you couldnt understand a dam thing he was sayin..hair in his face ,,looked like cousin it....didnt mater this is the legendary BLACK SABBATH .
I think this song has the best beginning ever! Shivers run down the spine as the scream, pounding drums and the power chords hit you right in the face!
@melowar78 I guess it's the colors, it just looks cheesy and cheap to me. It's considered by many to be one of the worst album covers ever, but if you like it that's cool.
@thebailey67 man you know if you go back into ozzys catalog...youll find that he changed with the times...always...he never stood artistic ground..now he tunes down to sound like korn...man fuck!
I actually like Ian Gillan singing for Black Sabbath better than singing for Deep Purple, He just sounds so evil on this album.

One of the most overlooked and supremely underrated Sabbath albums
I loved Ian in Sabbath, too bad it didn't last, cause this album is WICKED EVIL!!!!
ashenhooves 1 year ago 63
@ashenhooves the sad part is they have made gillen himself say he was the worst singer for sabbath. which is far from the truth.
argavus 1 year ago
@argavus to hear that Ian himself would make such a statement is truly sad,But Political,You know, Just to clear the way for the next guy. But had this album been recorded under a different name...lets say Gillan,Butler,Iommi & Ward.It would've gone down as one of the most Dark and Powerful things ever heard, I mean really just sit and listen to this album start to finish....F'n HEAVY...HEAVVVVVVY.
Thanks Ian,some people didn't "get it"...But I did!
ashenhooves 1 year ago
@ashenhooves totally agree would have been better under a sydonim the concert was UN-REAL caught them in Rochester back in the day EPIC!
ewag67 1 year ago
@ewag67 I was just making a statement about the politics of it really, I'm Glad this got the Sabbath name, This is a top three sab albums for me in no order... Sabotage,Live evil,Born Again
ashenhooves 1 year ago
@ashenhooves Part of it may have been because Ian said he only did this album for the money and never liked this kind of music anyway. It's hard to say really, but this song is total badass. It's a shame it doesn't get the audience it deserves. It's IMO the most evil song on this album and that is a damn good thing! \m/

@Fretslayer even if Ian sang a toilet paper commercial (for the money) it would still be the sickest toilet paper jingle, sang by one of the sickest vocalist ever. Even not caring (if its true) he managed to kick just about everybodys ass straight to hell!!!
\m/ back atcha bro!

Most evil album Sabbath ever did, and they did it without "the prince of darkness"! Nazareth's "Hair of the Dog" is another one that is overlooked as an entire album.

@metemi Why is the album cover stupid? I always thought it was bad ass.
melowar78 1 year ago
@melowar78 I guess it's the colors, it just looks cheesy and cheap to me. It's considered by many to be one of the worst album covers ever, but if you like it that's cool.
