@aliinottingham First of all, do movies really need a "purpose" ? Furthermore, what exactly do you mean by "purpose" ? Finally, if these film makers set out with the goal to make a "disturbing" film, haven't they achieved their purpose ? Movies don't need to be predictable with a linear plot lines to be good.
I hate this movie it sucks balls the entire time I'm wanting to kill all those pieces of trash, fucking cat killers. Damn! The things I'd do to someone I found whipping a dead cat hanging from a tree.
IMO, Gummo made the best usage of Like a Prayer EVER. i love that song AND th movie. the song fits the movie in the most perfect way, when you think about it
It's not symbolic. Harmony Korine said so. Anyone who says otherwise is being pretentious. Watch an interview. Read something. Look into what he actually said before making judgments.
i was checkin on demand one night and found this movie. it was awesomely amazing in a weird way. now my boyfriend and i and a couple of our friends are going to dress up as some of the characters for halloween. lol.
@MrButtcrackJones maw i mean he wouldnt have aeven had the idea unless larry clark had come to him with the idea in the first place he would have come out with a version of something like this (gummo) thats lacking alot but only good because its not main stream
This film is a complete masterpiece. No questions necessary. It's the only movie I can watch over and over, or fall asleep to. And I also say "that's so gummo" at many things. This film has inspired my photography as well as my perception of the world and every moment of my life. I could do without every other film on Earth as long as I have Gummo.
whoa, some of these scenes aren't even in the movie. Like the part where the Jehovah's witness skinhead brothers spit dust over the camera or the minstrel scene with the guy in blackface make up. Weird
I think this video makes us all think about what we really want out of life. Obviously the kids in this movie have problems that is why they act the way they do. They have no parents that care, they just do whatever. I think it's a great movie. Better than watching some movie that has been remade over and over again.
Fuckoff. :P I meant the bit litrally in the first few seconds, that gets cut out when the dude spits at the camera. But thanks for trying to help anyways.
the reason so many people hate this film is they don't understand that this film isn't supposed to make a straight out in your face point. it's not like slumdog millionaire or any of those feel good films. you have to look past what they are doing and ask "why are they doing this? is it due to their lack of guidence growing up? their surroundings? the people they surround themselves with?" asking deeper questions like those can make someone understand films like Gummo.
@DubyaDubyaE That's not the reason that people don't like this film, the main reason people dont like this film is bcuz its essentially a plotless film, its made to stir emotions and questions bt when the only question is why than its not doing a great job. I watched the film like 3 or 4 times n i understand they do these things out of boredom, n i can even identify with the things u said. But my question is why these people? Why make this film, why there story. Who cares n why should they?
You answered your own question. Ask yourself: what is the artistic significance of there being no plot? It's deliberate choice by the director to show how drab life is. She is trying to say their lives are pointless and meaningless; such as saying a movie without a plot is pointless and meaningless.
actually the director Harmony Korine is a guy bro, n yea its simply a meaningless movie which makes my ask why did he write it n why did i watch it lol... i love Harmony, but most people r captivated with this movie bcuz of how different it is, not bcuz of the depth bcuz it has no depth, not bcuz of the story bcuz there is no story and not bcuz of the message bcuz there is no message......
@DubyaDubyaE ok, if it isnt supposed to make a straight out in your face point, then what is it supposed to do?
I'm really asking.
I ask questions and people give the dumbest responces. Like for example i ask wahts so great about it, they say its symbolic, i ask why is it symbolic, they cant respond.
GUMMO is a great film because it captures something that hasn't been expressed on film before, or at least, hasn't been realized on film so frighteningly before. White trash America has been portrayed by directors like Giuseppe Andrews and John Waters, but almost always in a humorour or stereotypical context. GUMMO gives it characters emotional resonance, albeit in a disturbing way. It's fascinating to see how these people live and how they fail to adapt after the tornado hit.
@MrButtcrackJones i watched it a little while back and i understood what he was trying to get at.. loss of innocence. but i think some of his ways of expressing that idea are.. annyoing..unprofessinal.. and immature. but there are parts that i thought could be better. i was okay with some scenes.
this might have been the fucking wierdest movie i ever saw!!!!! there is seemingly no point, i think that might have been the point of the movie!!!!!!! such a random movie!
well, i guess simon or jamie found the song first they liked the song, then traced it back that it was used as a movie soundtrack, so it fitted the theme of the week.
because it's not at all important how good the movie is, but how good the song to fit jamie's style

It's not just 'loss of innocence'. It's nihilism. And what better way to express that than juvenilely? Annoyingly?
