Two components of human struggle: addiction (chemical, emotional, etc) and forgiveness (the letting go of addiction).are beautifully depicted here -My favorite Sting song.
Healing starts with forgiveness. I love how Sting describes the hopelessness and emptiness of an addicts life, and ascends to the solution...A spiritual solution. As a recovering addict myself, I'll never forget hearing this for the first time live. Beautiful. There is a way out... One Love
Sting was raised as a Roman Catholic, but he has declared he is agnostic (check out _Broken Music_, his autobiography). Though he does not subscribe to any particular creed, the concept of faith, spirituality, and religions in general fascinate him, and he has a great amount of respect for religious beliefs. His latest album, _If on a Winter's Night_, contains mostly Christian Christmas hymns. This song is beautiful and further proof of his open-mindedness and acceptance.
think this song is about ADDICTION if you are an ADDICT you are carrying a tombstone on your back like Sting says in the song. WALK AWAY from all ADDICTIONS walk into th light of LOVE and FORGIVENESS!!!!!Please.xoxoxoxo!!!!!Love your Life!xoxoxxoxo!!1

To me this is about the Love/Hate feeling you have when you Deeply Love someone you just cannot help or reach. You get so frustrated, you walk away before you say or do something you shouldnt. Sitting thinking about being HELPLESS yourself, unable to stop the tide and KNOWING this will continue to happen as long as you love them. You then realize that you should just forgive and accept them with their faults, For if you had lived all their experiences, you too would choose exactly as they do.
This song to me is about having loved and lost....very dearly. Having wronged some rights...and gotten too far away from home. Suffered desolation, acute isolation, falling and rising up great heights but still not knowing why it got so lonely at the top, at the bottom, with your love or without anyone....feeling marooned on an island feeling like you're about to breathe your last. This song symbolizes the longing that drives us to achieve a bliss which never really occurs.
I agree that this is Sting's finest. It is the truth of walking life without the hope and love of Jesus, we are deadmen without Him. But with the Love of God we can walk into hope and life.
Aha, this is the story I have been wondering about. In the concert video, Sting says before he begins, "So, this is for you, Kim, wherever you are." I wondered, was this friend of his a suicide, drug addict? Because he seems to be singing about a deeply suffering, perhaps denying person. I prefer the concert version, somehow more intense. Divinely moving song. The melody is evidently a study of the one from Walking In Your Footsteps, I don't just mean the explicit quotation.
I love how he addresses the listener personally in the last verse- it's like he's saying, "this song will always be there." Breaking the musical "4th wall." He did it in "Let your soul be your pilot" too.
"I have to agree, this has got to be one of Sting's greatest offerings. The sheer poetry and the overall theme of this song resonates both beauty and intelligence that is second to none. Thank you Sting and thank you for the post. I appreciate it!"

It reminds me of the suicide of my mother... it's so soothing though, that it's more healing than ripping open wounds. Beautiful Sting!
