Emotions can sometimes overpower logic. It is not necessarily sensible but it does happen and in her case, it did multiple times. His bullying of her by making her feel weak and powerless and ill suited to be a contributive member in the relationship because she dared not focus on him always was a major issue.

Even in our society, it still more on what you as a male have in terms of economic and social standing.
