This was a frustrating scene, it did seem to drag on too long. However, I think they were trying to emphasize, through the symbolism of this long pause, how long she has waited for him. Eight years. I think it was way too long, and I would have much rather looked at his beautiful face in anticipation for this kiss, than hers. But then again, I have a thing with men in cravats.

Oh dear - this was horrific to watch. I agree with all the comments above. The close up of her mouth was a mistake, particularly the saliva rising up along the sides. I have to say that the Ciaran Hinds/Amanda Root Persuasion is the best Jane Austen adaptation ever made and blew this one out of the water. Their kiss at the end was perfect.

It begins with such potential, but the dragging out of the meeting of lips loses impetus for both the energy of the couple and the audience, and once that threshold is crossed, the rest is just boring. Not directed as well as perhaps it could have been.

Sally Hawkins is actually very pretty. It was too long before kissing causing the awkward moment, at least for me.

From an interview, it was said that the actors did 2 options - no kissing & kissing, but they should have edited it to be shorter if they decided to keep the kissing scene.

Also, they should have moved the camera another way, not close-up to her mouth.

Overall I like the film.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore this film and I cry every time I watch it, but this kiss annoys me a little. The suspense as he V.E.R.Y. S.L.O.W.L.Y. leans down to kiss her just kills me... I'm like "hurry up, c'mon, kiss already!!" everytime I see it.

you have to watch it a couple times to appreciate it. i love the way that the moment before they kiss is savored...as if they can look back and remember every instant of their (most likely first) kiss. i also loved how anne looks so luminous in this scene.

I really enjoyed this adaptation. The 1995 movie was also very good. Just two different versions, each with its own charm. Sure they indulged a bit with the prolonged kiss but so what? If you don't like this sort of thing don't watch it. I can't imagine why people would dislike the movie so strongly as to post a negative comment. I think it's unfortunate. But no matter. You can't spoil it for those of us who enjoyed it. RPJ is delicious and he and Sally Hawkins are fantastic together.

The second part until the end is really disgusting. I don`t understand why they have taken so much trouble in ruin Jane Austen`s novel. The most romantic part is completely changed and made this horrible actress follow him all over the city like a desperate woman and if anyone have read the book could be no more disappointed as I am now.

Yesterday I read "Northanger Abbey" and saw the film on YouTube after that. I was dissapointed too about the end of this film, but some of the moments and the actors were not bad. Yes of course some artistic licence is advisable but when done properly, not like in this movie!!Take for example Pride and Prejudice, North and South, these were really great adaptations of the books.

Sally Hawkins is beautiful! She may not be typically so, but her acting was amazing and they made a wonderful Wentworth and Anne. Readers of the book will see that the casting is perfect....and I think the kiss was so beautiful!
