I agree with the the massive amounts of people saying the kiss is aweful. But i wanted to see the 'wedding part" this seems to always be a thing they dont show :(
This was a frustrating scene, it did seem to drag on too long. However, I think they were trying to emphasize, through the symbolism of this long pause, how long she has waited for him. Eight years. I think it was way too long, and I would have much rather looked at his beautiful face in anticipation for this kiss, than hers. But then again, I have a thing with men in cravats.
Oh dear - this was horrific to watch. I agree with all the comments above. The close up of her mouth was a mistake, particularly the saliva rising up along the sides. I have to say that the Ciaran Hinds/Amanda Root Persuasion is the best Jane Austen adaptation ever made and blew this one out of the water. Their kiss at the end was perfect.
I agree - this kiss is truly one of cinema's worst. It begins with such potential, but the dragging out of the meeting of lips loses impetus for both the energy of the couple and the audience, and once that threshold is crossed, the rest is just boring. Not directed as well as perhaps it could have been.
Sally Hawkins is actually very pretty. It was too long before kissing causing the awkward moment, at least for me.
From an interview, it was said that the actors did 2 options - no kissing & kissing, but they should have edited it to be shorter if they decided to keep the kissing scene.
Also, they should have moved the camera another way, not close-up to her mouth.
This is literally the most awkward kiss I have ever seen. I mean, it's sweet and all, but I don't think she needed to linger as long as she did. Love the rest of it, though.
@katalius123 I don't think it's awkward. It's just he came to her before and she rejected him so his just making her work for it this time. I for one love this kiss, she keeps moving in pauses looks up at him as if to say "Aren't you going to take over". And his like "No, show me how badly you want it". It gets me everytime.
One thing that I don't like about this scene is I know that you know his looking at her because it's in her eyes but, one shot of that Wentworth's face would've knocked the wind outta me.
Persuasion is the best period drama, it's got everything passion, longing, great characters, family drama, and two people deeply committed to each other. Perfection. love that kiss...
Heard it on Classic TV months back and im sure Sigur Ros were mentioned afterwards with the peice, however i have checked the soundtrack to persuasion and the peice doesnt seem to be on there, but do remember it been mentioned.
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore this film and I cry every time I watch it, but this kiss annoys me a little. The suspense as he V.E.R.Y. S.L.O.W.L.Y. leans down to kiss her just kills me... I'm like "hurry up, c'mon, kiss already!!" everytime I see it.
i loved this adaptaion of Persuasion it is my fav book and think that they cast well this scene is soo sweet i think t shows the loging and how long they have had to wait sooo well i
Sally Hawkins and Emma Thompson are the only 2 actresses in all the Jane Austin adaptations that have acted the way the times would have demanded. Much much better acting than all the P+Ps. Love it.
Ironically, I was really pissed at this kiss.... she kept reaching and reaching and reaching, and he was so darn tall, and it took him AGES to bend down to her. Grr. It seemed so... irritating.
Well i loved this moment and kiss better than any kiss in any jane austin movie. i agree the saliva is a little distracting, but she was running all over the place and out of breath. this kiss goes with the sexual tension between them throughout the movie, the passion and longing they both felt in wanting to be together all those years. it was beautiful
you have to watch it a couple times to appreciate it. i love the way that the moment before they kiss is savored...as if they can look back and remember every instant of their (most likely first) kiss. i also loved how anne looks so luminous in this scene.
I completely agree with you! I really loved this adaptation of the book, I am so hooked on Jane Austen's leading men. Rupert was yummy in it, I also loved JJ Feild as Mr. Tilney and the always HOT C. Firth as Mr.Darcy **sigh**
I really enjoyed this adaptation. The 1995 movie was also very good. Just two different versions, each with its own charm. Sure they indulged a bit with the prolonged kiss but so what? If you don't like this sort of thing don't watch it. I can't imagine why people would dislike the movie so strongly as to post a negative comment. I think it's unfortunate. But no matter. You can't spoil it for those of us who enjoyed it. RPJ is delicious and he and Sally Hawkins are fantastic together.
I saw it. I liked it well enough. I did have a problem with the last 10 min where Ann is running around like her neck was cut off looking for Frederick. That was just awful.I don't mind new adaptations, but please...
Sorry guys who did enjoyed this moment, but I was laughing in the whole time... can't help it. I have seen this movie 2 times now and I'm still laughing at it... but I'll buy this when it's available in Sweden anyway. Like this movie somehow ^^
I am a purist when it comes to Jane Austen. But I am looking for to see this on PBS 1-13-08. I loved the 95 version with Amanda Root, even thought the actors look a little old playing Ann & captain Wentworth
This is a great adaptation. I must say, though, that in this important scene I'm distracted by the saliva that keeps bubbling in her mouth! And yes, even if that sort of thing happens in real life all the time, this is a Jane Austen adaptation afterall...everyone wants to enjoy these big scenes.
yeh i no, loved this adaption (mostly because of rupert) but i found this kiss kinda embarrasing. Like u say everything should be perfect in Jane austen adaptations
I`ve just known something about Rupert recently. I like Persuasion 2007 very much. Here in Spain we barely can´t see this movies. Thanks a lot. And you British people are fortunate for have BBC. Gracias.
It's the picture. It's distored. The original video is is widescreen and this is fullscreen. The sound is absolutely awful too. Don't judge it on this.
hmmm...I've seen better. I think they are both doing a bad job kissing - lack of chemistry i guess. I don't think they were cast very well. I've seen both actors in other movies doing a much better job!
The second part until the end is really disgusting. I don`t understand why they have taken so much trouble in ruin Jane Austen`s novel. The most romantic part is completely changed and made this horrible actress follow him all over the city like a desperate woman and if anyone have read the book could be no more disappointed as I am now.
I saw this film and I like it very much especially Rupert-Penry Jones. But I don't like the kiss (too much water) :) Unfortunately, I don't read the book, can't find it yet. But I agree with you, in Austen's time woman never run along the streets for man, it was indecently and inadmissible.
Yesterday I read "Northanger Abbey" and saw the film on YouTube after that. I was dissapointed too about the end of this film, but some of the moments and the actors were not bad. The most reliable screen version of Jane Austen's novel I regard "Pride & Prejudice" with Colin Firth. Greetings from Russia. ;)
For goodness sake get over yourself. So it isn't exactly what she wrote. So what? Some artistic licence is permissable as far as I'm concerned. It was wonderful I loved it. As for horrible actress, what planet are you on? Sally Hawkins was wondeful she's the best Anne Elliot I've seen (and belive me I've watched 'em all.)
Yes of course some artistic licence is advisable but when done properly, not like in this movie!!Take for example Pride and Prejudice, North and South, these were really great adaptations of the books.
And about Sally, sorry but she is not made for this role.I don`t know how many Anne Elliots have you seen, but anyway, just that she is the best for you in comparison to the others doesn`t make her suitable for the movie either nor play well in this movie. And she is definetely horrible.
what people r on about? dude, this is seriously bad kissing...spit bubbles and all! man the guy looks like he's about to gag. If you think that is good you've got to get another girlfriend (or boyfriend...whatever), because the big noun missing here is PASSION.
OMG - those guys have no chemistry (they don't have it through the entire movie)! I'm a sucker for love scenes but this one makes me cringe...it's embaressing cuz the kiss seems forced and unreal...yuck! I thought Sally Hawkins was a good actress but I'm starting to doubt that after having watched persuasion...it was a huge bore! Don't waste your money on it.
okay the lead up to the kiss was 20 seconds to long. if someone could edit out that needless twenty seconds then... maybe it would be a passionate kiss. I wouldn't call it naughty though. maybe RPJ doesn't get out mucn in the way of screen kisses...
what the hell he calls this naughty and steamy!! This f**king sucks!! I like this movie but I just can't stand the kiss. And you can see bobbles of spit in her mouth as she talks. GROSS!!
Beautiful! I LOVED this kiss; the fact she has to work for it a little. ! This is coming from someone who's not a fan of romance nor Jane Austen nor even Captain Wentworth. Also, Sally Hawkins is amazing!
What-does she kiss another woman in Fingersmith? No thanks, I don't think I could watch that. It would spoil my image of her as Anne. Anyway, that is what the fuss is about,at least for me, that this kiss could have been more passionate or better filmed.
I don't see what all the fuss is about? That kiss was lame. Not even a real proper kiss. Her kiss to Elaine in Fingersmith was MUCH more real, believable and passionate. Check that one out instead!
Sally Hawkins is beautiful! She may not be typically so, but her acting was amazing and they made a wonderful Wentworth and Anne. Readers of the book will see that the casting is perfect....and I think the kiss was so beautiful!
I was afraid to say it but I'm with the "too long" and "gag" camp at this kiss. I can't believe anyone would put it in the same league as the N&S kiss. RPJ couldn't be a more dashing leading man but his leading lady...not. How could the people behind the camera think this was good enough?! Cut! Take 2!
am i the only one that didnt gag watching that? as much as i love rupert, the leading lady was out of his league, and made it seem any attractions seem unrealistic,
Lovely adaptation! By any chance, do you have the persuasion -behind the scenes- video? and if so, can you please put the video here? It would be really great to see them...
I've watched just about every bloody period drama ever done in the UK and I have to say, that kiss is possibly the most tantalising there has ever been, lol! Great stuff and thanks for putting it up.
omg omg omg! i hav the dvd of the old persuasion - n its not as gs! nowhere near as good as this one - JUST OMG OMG OMG! FUHH and RPJ fuhhh lol! cnt wait fr sum1 to post it all! omg!
oh thank you sooo much, this was fabulous!!! I can't wait wait to see the whole thing, it looks like it's fabulous!!! RPJ is so gorgeous! So glad they chose him for the role!! Never seen SH in anything else but from this clip it looks like she's great also!! thanks again!
someone will be haha cant wait i watched it on sunday i only wished i taped it :( anyways i cnt wait i need it lol! i love thie scene thnx for puttin it up! this is one of my favourites films (period drama type) 1.p and p 2.n and s and i can now have a 3rd! persuasion!!!!
OMG! *thud* Those kissing scenes are absolutely killing me like in N&S *swoons* Thank you so much for sharing this:) I hope someone will upload the whole movie soon!!!

I thought Sally Hawkins was a good actress but I'm starting to doubt that after having watched persuasion...it was a huge bore! Don't waste your money on it.

Yuck. Bad kiss scene. It's made me feel a bit pukey.

okay the lead up to the kiss was 20 seconds to long. if someone could edit out that needless twenty seconds then... maybe it would be a passionate kiss. I wouldn't call it naughty though. maybe RPJ doesn't get out mucn in the way of screen kisses...
UltimateJoolsFan 4 years ago
what the hell he calls this naughty and steamy!!

Also, Sally Hawkins is amazing!

mmmhhhh.....what was that? a chicken trying to reach worms?.....what the?....nooope, didnt like it

What-does she kiss another woman in Fingersmith? No thanks, I don't think I could watch that. It would spoil my image of her as Anne. Anyway, that is what the fuss is about,at least for me, that this kiss could have been more passionate or better filmed.
desertann 4 years ago
I don't see what all the fuss is about? That kiss was lame. Not even a real proper kiss. Her kiss to Elaine in Fingersmith was MUCH more real, believable and passionate. Check that one out instead!
efh7557 4 years ago
looks like she is begging to be kissed. they should have focused on his face, not the back of his head. you can tell the director was a man

That kiss is awful. If you want to watch a sexy, romantic kiss watch North and South instead!

Cut! Take 2!
kathalinasenta 4 years ago
and i also liked to add Frankly it was a bit tortuous the length of time it took for their lips to meet.
abira 4 years ago
am i the only one that didnt gag watching that? as much as i love rupert, the leading lady was out of his league, and made it seem any attractions seem unrealistic,

you are not alone...

Lovely adaptation! By any chance, do you have the persuasion -behind the scenes- video? and if so, can you please put the video here? It would be really great to see them...
marie21000 4 years ago
I was perplexed. The lead up to the kiss was dramatic....but what happened to the actual kiss?
This really only shows the beginning....or am I too demanding???
glorybsee 4 years ago
I've watched just about every bloody period drama ever done in the UK and I have to say, that kiss is possibly the most tantalising there has ever been, lol! Great stuff and thanks for putting it up.
fifiricci 4 years ago
May I ask where RPJ said that remark about the kiss? I liked the kiss but many did not. I loved the drama, the two leads were fascinating to watch!!
