I don't think that the game is capable of displaying Kanji. You'd probably have to fill an entire SNES cartridge to get every Kanji in there, so they have to settle for kana, which is already over 100 symbols.

Kicked objects move slower than thrown objects. You could have put down he block and either kicked it yourself or made the blue koopa kick it and been able to keep up with it.
