  • An incredably talented man that never took himself to seriously. I saw him three times and was blown away by each performance. Michael as Madonna is hilarious and sounds great at the same time.

  • I love how he find this enormous sincerity in this piece of pop

  • I think the tuning is the same a Ritual Dance. At least I am able to play along with the harmonics and the rest on the chords.

  • Love it. Like it more than Madonna's version and Michael actually makes see what a beautiful song this really is.

    ...RIP M.H.

  • It has all been said before friends...this is a perfect example of Michael's gift.. It was even better live 15 or so years ago.. Positively one of his best and one of my favorites.. Thanks for the travel back in time my friend..

    Troy

  • God i love this man

He complete reinventes the song in this cover , i´ve never seen such an elaboreted and livily guitar backing , it´s as the guitar is alive and singing along with him , and the solos are mindblowing as well , micheal made the best covers ever, he captured the essence of the song and makes it ... his own...

    R.I.P micheal we miss you

  • @Sign213 "he captured the essence of the song and makes it ... his own..." -well said.

  • whats the tuning , anyone?

  • I could listen it all day long....

  • 3 stars until you get to 3:40 then *****

  • Am saying 5 stars all the way!

  • I just watched it again--I meant 2:40 (not 3:40--I suck). I'm hoping my comment will get non-believers to watch all of the Hedges videos....

  • 5 stars cos it's michael fawking hedges!!!

  • Such a talent, full of life, happiness and fun. Such a shame, guess the good really do die young.

  • Heard this recording of "Lucky Star" as an MP3 for over a year, and it became one of my favorite Hedges vocal tracks. Then I got to wondering when he wrote the lyrics...or who wrote them. Like Type3secretion, it takes Hedges to get me to listen to a Madonna song all the way through. Michael transforms the song. "Eminence Front" (the Who) is another great cover tune that's captured on video.

  • And lets not get started on A Love Bizarre

  • "Gonna' be some sweet sounds, comin' down, on the Night Shift"... no doubt!

  • Nobody does a cover like Michael Hedges, love him. Only found him a few weeks ago, must get more of his stuff, thanks for posting.

  • LOL, and we....... turn around!!!!!

  • great hedges

  • He just seems to have so much fun playing, its a shame hes gone. Its seems like he was truly at peace when he played on stage.

  • completely blown away. my friend chas just told me about this guy. can anyone tell me more?

  • Michael Hedges is considered the father of modern fingerstyle (no pick) guitar. He died much too young in the 90s but there are others keeping the style alive. If you like this check out Keller Williams, Don Ross, Antoine Dufour, and Erik Mongrain They all consider Hedges one of their biggest influences. Let me know what you want to know and I'll tell you.

  • And Hedges paid homage to Pierre Bensusan...LOL...while I wold not agree that he is the "father of modern fingerstyle," I would most definitely say that he made alternate tunings and percussives (hitting the body of the guitar and/or the strings) more popular than ever before, and took that part of playing to a new height. Andy McKee is another great, BTW...

  • @guitarallday

i know i'm late to this video, sorry...did he use a standard acoustic(sounds like 1 whole step down) or a baritone?

  • @ZOMBIELANDakaUSA

He usually uses a standard acoustic tuned in really weird ways. I'm not sure what the tuning is on this exact song but most of his songs are tuned differently than one another. In other words, he changes the intervals between the strings as well as simply dropping them down a whole step. This can put serious strain on most guitars but re tuning to standard after you play helps. Other people have been known to put graphite in their bridges to change the action specific to

  • @guitarallday

thanks for the info.As i've only found Michael recently,i've been consumed by Hedges since i posted my question,so i've found alot of info out per his setup, and some tabs...!!! I actually just bought a baritone acoustic with Hedges sound in mind,i like the longer scale as i play an 8 string electric,i know not the same, but what a challenge.Suffice to say all my other acoustics have been tuned 1 whole step down.

What an inspiration Michael is,my fingers are swollen!!!

  • Michael Hedges remains the best acoustic guitarist of all time. His technique was incredible. If there's anything you want to know just give me a shout.

  • I was fortunate enough to see him 5 times in concert in the early to mid 90's. I was blown away every time. I always thought that his show was something that Everyone should see once in their lifetimes. Watch 'Ragamuffin' or him play 'Because it's there' on the harp guitar and you knew you were witnessing a historical feat in artistry. Not just the technical stuff of pulling it off, but the inspiration to think of it Miss you Micheal.

  • beautiful and natural

  • madonna could totally hire him and make her at least have an excellent musician to accompany her lousy voice.

  • ps. i know he passed away, it's a shame.

  • Great. Thanks for this. I saw him play this at Stanford, California... he started spinning and didnt' stop.

  • TNX MADONNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!

  • Michael reminds me of Chet Baker in the sense that both were God blessed with incredible ability in the instruments they played. But they could both set down their instruments, and sing so beautifuly. One could walk in off the street and think they were merely vocalists until they played them.

  • Michael Hedges was not good....he was a genius. His musical ability was like no other. The universe truly lost when he passed away, to soon for those of us who have been fans for many years. I have a play list devoted just to him I truly give my thanks to type3 for all the work and effort you have put into this. But I have to admit, my favorite of all his works is Dirge. It touches my soul.

  • here here

  • Well said.

We're incredibly to have folks like Type3 (and others here on YouTube) to keep the music of Michael Hedges alive...

So, go and buy a Hedges album NOW! Support him and his family by doing so...

  • Ahahah, My guitar teacher has been wanting me to look him up so thank you for your effort! :) He is REALLY good!

  • type 3 i have a question.... i was wondering what the tuning is to the song i like how you included the tunings in the other songs

  • this one i don't know, unfortunately

  • damn well if i figure it out i will let you know

  • @type3secretion I think it is DADGAC

  • @pickinastring I'm not sure what he tuning is either, but it doesn't sound far off in his Come Together tuning.

  • @pickinastring well, he's a little bit flat (probably because it's live) but I think it's tuned to something like DADDAC?

  • @pickinastring its the same as jitterboogie

  • SHAME that so few views this.. after 1 year, only 800.... :(

  • only 2 months on this one, so it's doing ok i think!

  • Oh, well then its great! but i still wish there would be more :P

  • Man, anyone who thinks that there is no way to do an acoustic cover of a classic 80s Madonna hit... watch and learn.

I've got a bootleg of Hedges doing "Comfortably Numb," the crowd was freaked out but once they calmed down it just soared. The key to a cover is to make it your own and to not just play someone else's tune. Hedges NEVER played someone else's tune, and his concerts always featured a good amount of covers. Tells you something about him.

  • great video:)

  • Man, Type3... thank you so much for this tribute to the best acoustic guitarist in history..... I was lucky enough to see him twice, but you are giving a whole new generation the ability to hang with the most talented instrumentalist to ever have lived..... And things that aren't on disc... Too cool... keep it up.... Thanks man...
