Why Subaru power? Seems like having to have a redrive, the added weight, and all the plumbing for the cooling system would be extra challenging. Corvair power seems to be growing in some circles, mostly tractor but why not pusher? Regardless, isn't it wonderful to be able to do an overhaul for a tiny fraction of the cost of a "Lyco-nental"? You HAVE a flying machine! I applaud anyone who has accomplished the feat of flying his own machine, especially if he/she assembled it themselves.
I was going to give this a thumbs down because of the title. The flying looked fine to me execpt for the execess rudder. But then I read the description and had to give it a thumbs up! A Subaru engine is great for some aircraft like the KR2S but how the heck are you cooling it on that thing? Wow is all I can say....
Doesn't the tail need to be offset in order to counter the rotation of the main Rotor? Just having forward thrust is not enough, especially at low speeds, such as taking off and landing. Forward thrust will only keep a helicpter straight at higher speeds. Normal helicopters have the tail rotor to counter the main rotor, but a gyro has no tail rotor.
@AesopsRetreat A gyrocopter doesnot put power into the overhead blades. If it did then yes it would require q tail rotor to compensate for the torque. The ovrhead rotor blades have a small rotor that gets them spinning and is disnegaged after you have forward movement. you have to have forward movement to keep them spinning. The overhead blades are actually a poor parachute in use on a gyrocopter.
Great looking craft! Don't know a bunch...but is the engine centered? I've read something about thrust vectors..and such. Probably something simple causing it.
When ever you put the words "How not to..." in a youtube video title, ppl will expect big explosions and ppl dieing. If they dont see that they will just dislike the video -_-

Did you try adjusting the motor mount to get a bit of asymmetric thrust? That might help a little, but having a larger rudder and maybe a smaller prop disk with more blades would help. It sure looked awesome!
Honestly, by the title of the video, I was expecting to see a crash, or a failure to even take off, but I have to say that was pretty impressive!
I would love to try one of these...I've never flown one before, but I would imagine that it gives you a sensation that you just couldn't get from an everyday 'conventional aircraft'. Am I correct in thinking that this is one of the most auxillerating experiences a person can have?
One slight hitch; in a plane, if the power source goes out, you can glide; your power source goes out, and you fall. Until the earth abruptly ends the descent.
@JeffersonDinedAlone You can glide these for a short distance too. They are in a constant state of auto-rotation. It can be landed safey without the engine running. The engine doesnt power the main rotor system only the pusher prop.
The way you DON'T build a Gyroplane is by making one that doesnt fly. This one flies. It's amazing to get something like this to fly in the first place.
whats the crash rate with theaea things. i`de loe one but, if something goes wrong with the rotor the you should have about the same glide ratio of a tool box

The problem with such craft are that they can't travel at very high speeds. The top rotors stop getting enough lift on one side while they get too much on the other. However, as this is not meant to go very quickly, I'd say that it looks fun to ride in.
Gyroplanes had their heyday in the 1930's and some pretty sophisticated four passenger versions were built.

It appears to be a crosswind condition. However, it may not be the case here. First thing I would do is do a center of gravity balance check. @lwblack64 Wise words, sir, and I do so very much agree. I never thought to apply such thinking to something like this, though, for some reason. I most certainly have respect for pilots and the mechanics who allow their crafts to fly safely, but I personally don't think I could stand up to the pressure of piloting any aircraft. To put it crudely and frankly, "I aiint got the balls."
I do love to fly on aircraft as a passenger, but I don't think I could handle the piloting myself.
wow, how much does all the equipment cost for this hobby? iam already fixed wing private pilot and i always wanted to get into helis. but it seems that a powered rotar would be more expensive
@MyMisteryMe as @jonvee said with the right equipment you can reach 10 grand, but without an O2 supply you will be lucky to push 8, we say 7 grand maximum for full mental capabilities at the military pilot school i attend
@phunkyphantom619 BS when I was in Colorado we flew to 14,000 on a regular basis with no O2 in our Blackhawks. At 7,000 and above its recommended you use O2 for night flights with NVGS. Still we did not do that and our airfield at Ft. Carson was 7,400 feet.
@DobermansRock As the total atmospheric pressure decreases with altitude, the available oxygen pressure decreases. A lack of sufficient oxygen will bring on hypoxia. hypoxia may begin as low as 5,000 feet with decreased night vision. The retina of the eye is affected by even extremely mild hypoxia. At 8,000 feet, forced concentration, fatigue and headache may occur. At 14,000 feet, forgetfulness, incompetence and indifference makes flying without the proper supplemental oxygen quite hazardous.
@DobermansRock so i take it you was not the pilot in command and merely a passenger, in my comment i talked about being the pilot, the pilot needs oxygen, so you yankie BS about you flying to 14,000ft and being fine can just go away, after being a pilot for over 4 years now and having over 200 logged flights as pilot in command i think i know what im talking about
@phunkyphantom619 Yes I was a aircrewmember in UH-60's we did not fly with O2 ever. Been nice to be talked down to by whatever and whoever you think you are. Also You were probably still in middle school when I started flying possibly you should shut your piehole. As a civilian I was a pilot. In the Army I was a Non-rated crewmember. Pilot or not we are all working together. O2 or no O2. I understand aeromedicine and Hypoxia all 5 types. Shit on you smart ass.
@DobermansRock well you must be some sort of super hero then, because as a pilot.. not non-rated crewmember i would know of the physical demands on you and there is 1 no reason for you to fly at 14,000ft in a bird and certainly would need oxygen since birds in afghan dont usually go above 8grand and the highest we can go in a non pressurised cabin is 10 without oxygen due to the risk of hypoxia, saying that since when have Americans ever followed rules, world police and that O__o*sarcasm*
@phunkyphantom619 Go check the altitude of Pikes Peak you asshole. We flew over it all the time. Then you can look up Leadville airport. The highest elevation airport in North America. Who ever mentioned Afghan? Ive never been there. Only every other deployment since Bosnia. You are a TROLL. Go away. Probably couldnt tell me 1 thing about flight or aviation I don't already know about.
@DobermansRock i am a troll how? and i bet there is lots i can tell you about flight or aviation that you do not know about seeing how i have progressed passed your non rated crew member level to the officer commissions of pilot.. so try me
@DobermansRock a certified shit bag.. i like it, although i prefer FLT LT or CPT for Americans. Gyroscopic Precession (procession) is the change in direction of a rotating body, called torque free and torque induced if i remember correctly and is the result of the angular velocity of rotation and the angular velocity produced by the torque?
@RobSar63 watch the video again, and look at it from behind, the RUDDER is turned hard right just to fly straight, that's the problem. it should do that, but the new models should have 3 REAR RUDDERS, it's similar effect of helicopters, but on helicopters they have the tail rotor to offset the cetrifegal twist. later
There is nothing wrong with the gyro or how it was made/built/put together. My suggestion to this person is to take flying lessons with a certified pilot in a small airplane. That way, you can learn the proper way to land in crosswind situations.
lwblack64 wrote: "My suggestion to this person is to take flying lessons with a certified pilot in a small airplane. That way, you can learn the proper way to land in crosswind situations."
It doesn't look like a cross-wind situation to me. It looks like P-factor from the close proximity of the prop to the vertical stabilizer/rudder. Adjusting the thrust angle via the engine mount can minimize the need for such high rudder angles during straight and level flight.
Sorry for the "probably silly" question but, is it possible to convert an old trike flex wing to an autogyro? basic it is just a matter of adapt a rotor head and comands, but I'm not sure about CGs and stability...
gamotonfasismo wrote: "...will it glide like a plane? i mean you have to keep the nose down to avoid stalling and that's it? or it's more complicated?"
Less complicated, actually. Unlike a helicopter, the rotor of an autogyro (which is unpowered) is always in autorotation during flight. It spins because of airflow up through the rotor. Because of this, the rotor cannot stall the way a fixed-wing plane's airfoil can. The tradeoff is a lower glide ratio than a fixed wing; about 4:1 maximum.
gamotonfasismo wrote: "4:1 [glide ratio] is good enought to land? can you flare or speed up somehow? rotor rpm will slow down for any reason?"
Yes, it's simple to land a gyro, even with no power. You keep the sink rate high enough to keep the rotor RPM correct (typically 300 to 350), and then just before touchdown you pull back on the stick and settle to the ground. Easier than a helicopter because you don't have to change into autoratation; it's always there. No "dead man zone" either.
With a helicopter you need a certain amount of forward speed and a certain altitude to be able to convert from normal flight to autoratation in the even of engine or transmission failure. Too high or too slow and you crash. Those speeds and altitudes are based on the type of helicopter, the gross weight, etc., and plotted on what's called a dead man's curve.
Autogyros don't have this problem, because they are always in autorotation.
it doesnt look that bad lol. it looks to be flying ok, and didnt crash, so it must be ok, right? then again i know nothing about them, but i really want one!! my old lady wouldnt let me get a bike, so im pretty sure this is out of the question haha
I rebuilt this gyro to look similar to the Dominator brand of gyros. It flew much better. The wind during this video was directly down the runway at the time. To learn more about gyros join the Rotary Wing Forum.
The other problem with my gyroplane is that the rudder only spans half of the propeller. The air coming off of the propeller is shaped like a cork screw. The air blows against the side of the rudder and forces it to the side. You must push opposite rudder to compensate. A rudder that spans the propeller from end to end will effectively push from both sides in opposite directions and no compensation is needed.
There were two main problems with my gyroplane. One is that the engine propeller thrust line passes thru the aircraft above the vertical center of gravity. The engine thrust is constantly pushing the nose of the aircraft down. You have to compensate with aft stick. Many gyros have crashed because the pilot over controls the machine when air conditions and pilot skills do not match. The fix is to raise pilot seat so the thrust line passes thru the vertical center of gravity of the machine.
I am happy you are still around to fly. I like autogyros but heard accidents happen like this one. The schoolmy friend used to go to, the guy across the street was building an auto gyro and one day decided to fly it, all the kids in the school ran to the windows to go see him fly. He shot up around 400 ft then the engine shut off and the guy fell 400ft to his death in his driveway.
@jonvee In the original Bensen Design the nose down issue was solved by installing the engine with the thrust line 3 degrees down so that the propeller was higher by 3 degrees. This forced the nose up for the gyro....In Puerto Rico we used to fly gyros with the Bensen Design...My gyro used a very heavy Subaru EA81 engine wiht a 60" propeller and 23 feet McCullough rotor blades.
looks good to me but you either have a wicked cross wind or you need to shim the engine to compensate for "P" factor. So whats the deal? Nice looking machine and a good bit of flying.
Great video on how to BUILD a gyroplane. Thanks to this video, I now have the complete construction plans, bill of materials and comprehensive assembly instructions. Thanks, bud.
waaaajajajaaaaahhh this gyrocopter engined subaru gots 50horsepower waaaajajajajajajaaaaahhh, veeeery good gyrocopter.phineas and ferb likes it.m lol.
If you had taken any kind of flight schooling, you would know that the wind doesnt always blow straight down the runway of choice. When landing in a cross-wind situation, you give a little stick in the direction the wind is coming from and a little rudder in the opposite direction. This is called 'crabing' . It takes practice to perfect cross-wind landing but its well worth the effort
I think it may be because the rotation of the engine blade at that R.P.M. is causing it to "Yaw" to the left and he needs to "counter" it by applying full right rudder? It looks like a sweet little bird that he built though. I would like to build one just like that to fly myself.
dude i want to make a gyrocopter i just need to see how they build it can u show us at least a close up at the engine wat kind of engine is it or something like that???

Two possible solutions:
1.- tilt the engine to the right and downward so the rudder and elevator stay strait when flying.
2.- set engine off center about 30 cm to the left and 15 cm down
perhaps that will solve the problem

@phunkyphantom619 Yes I was a aircrewmember in UH-60's we did not fly with O2 ever. Been nice to be talked down to by whatever and whoever you think you are. Also You were probably still in middle school when I started flying possibly you should shut your piehole. As a civilian I was a pilot. In the Army I was a Non-rated crewmember. Pilot or not we are all working together. O2 or no O2. I understand aeromedicine and Hypoxia all 5 types. Shit on you smart ass.
DobermansRock 5 months ago
@DobermansRock well you must be some sort of super hero then, because as a pilot.. not non-rated crewmember i would know of the physical demands on you and there is 1 no reason for you to fly at 14,000ft in a bird and certainly would need oxygen since birds in afghan dont usually go above 8grand and the highest we can go in a non pressurised cabin is 10 without oxygen due to the risk of hypoxia, saying that since when have Americans ever followed rules, world police and that O__o*sarcasm*
phunkyphantom619 5 months ago
@phunkyphantom619 Go check the altitude of Pikes Peak you asshole. We flew over it all the time. Then you can look up Leadville airport. The highest elevation airport in North America. Who ever mentioned Afghan? Ive never been there. Only every other deployment since Bosnia. You are a TROLL. Go away. Probably couldnt tell me 1 thing about flight or aviation I don't already know about.

@DobermansRock Pilots with this attidude die all the time .
SAYYOURROSARY 4 months ago
@DobermansRock i am a troll how? and i bet there is lots i can tell you about flight or aviation that you do not know about seeing how i have progressed passed your non rated crew member level to the officer commissions of pilot.. so try me
phunkyphantom619 3 months ago
@phunkyphantom619 Oh so I am talking to a certified shitbag. Cool this will be fun. I guess we can start with gyroscopic procession. Details please.
DobermansRock 3 months ago
@DobermansRock a certified shit bag.. i like it, although i prefer FLT LT or CPT for Americans. Gyroscopic Precession (procession) is the change in direction of a rotating body, called torque free and torque induced if i remember correctly and is the result of the angular velocity of rotation and the angular velocity produced by the torque?

How not to build a Gyroplane??? Looks like it s working ok.
RobSar63 2 years ago 35
@RobSar63 watch the video again, and look at it from behind, the RUDDER is turned hard right just to fly straight, that's the problem. it should do that, but the new models should have 3 REAR RUDDERS, it's similar effect of helicopters, but on helicopters they have the tail rotor to offset the cetrifegal twist. later
trangenusa 6 months ago
@RobSar63 I meant to say, It should NOT DO THAT.

Compensating for a cross wind is considered a problem?
dustsmoke 2 years ago
what problem?
ethula14 2 years ago
There is nothing wrong with the gyro or how it was made/built/put together. My suggestion to this person is to take flying lessons with a certified pilot in a small airplane. That way, you can learn the proper way to land in crosswind situations.

It doesn't look like a cross-wind situation to me. It looks like P-factor from the close proximity of the prop to the vertical stabilizer/rudder. Adjusting the thrust angle via the engine mount can minimize the need for such high rudder angles during straight and level flight.

Sorry for the "probably silly" question but, is it possible to convert an old trike flex wing to an autogyro? basic it is just a matter of adapt a rotor head and comands, but I'm not sure about CGs and stability...
ribeiro34 2 years ago
Beautiful machine. Interesting about the rudder design. Thanks for the insight. You see examples of twin rudders, I guess the prop wash is why.
Try out X-plane sim to test a new rudder. The latest version has more accurate prop flow modeling and could help .
And yeah, the "autogyro" is always in autogyro mode, so if you have forward speed, you can glide and then flare out for a soft landing.
Xid3d 2 years ago
if the engine die, will it glide?
gamotonfasismo 2 years ago
yes, is the short answer.
but the pilot needs to know how to make it glide.
remotecontrolaholic 2 years ago
@remotecontrolaholic will it glide like a plane? i mean you have to keep the nose down to avoid stalling and that's it? or it's more complicated?
gamotonfasismo 2 years ago
gamotonfasismo wrote: "...will it glide like a plane? i mean you have to keep the nose down to avoid stalling and that's it? or it's more complicated?"
SeikiBrian 2 years ago
4:1 is good enought to land? can you flare or speed up somehow? rotor rpm will slow down for any reason? thanks for the info.
gamotonfasismo 2 years ago
gamotonfasismo wrote: "4:1 [glide ratio] is good enought to land? can you flare or speed up somehow? rotor rpm will slow down for any reason?"
SeikiBrian 2 years ago
@SeikiBrian what's dead man zone?
gamotonfasismo 2 years ago
With a helicopter you need a certain amount of forward speed and a certain altitude to be able to convert from normal flight to autoratation in the even of engine or transmission failure. Too high or too slow and you crash. Those speeds and altitudes are based on the type of helicopter, the gross weight, etc., and plotted on what's called a dead man's curve.
Autogyros don't have this problem, because they are always in autorotation.
SeikiBrian 2 years ago 3
ITS CALL autogyro because it always autorotate, doesn"t matter wheater engine is on -off (helicopters does the same thing
stealhty1 2 years ago
it doesnt look that bad lol. it looks to be flying ok, and didnt crash, so it must be ok, right? then again i know nothing about them, but i really want one!! my old lady wouldnt let me get a bike, so im pretty sure this is out of the question haha
somethingclever2007 2 years ago 2
i saw a lot of right rudder correction everytime he passes by
stealhty1 2 years ago
I rebuilt this gyro to look similar to the Dominator brand of gyros. It flew much better. The wind during this video was directly down the runway at the time. To learn more about gyros join the Rotary Wing Forum.
jonvee 2 years ago
The other problem with my gyroplane is that the rudder only spans half of the propeller. The air coming off of the propeller is shaped like a cork screw. The air blows against the side of the rudder and forces it to the side. You must push opposite rudder to compensate. A rudder that spans the propeller from end to end will effectively push from both sides in opposite directions and no compensation is needed.
jonvee 2 years ago 3
@jonvee so all you have to do is increase the size of of the rudder ???thats it
stealhty1 1 year ago
@jonvee Would that make it want to roll in the direction of the propeller?
poindexterdick 11 months ago

He shot up around 400 ft then the engine shut off and the guy fell 400ft to his death in his driveway.
scarface8999 2 years ago
@jonvee In the original Bensen Design the nose down issue was solved by installing the engine with the thrust line 3 degrees down so that the propeller was higher by 3 degrees. This forced the nose up for the gyro....In Puerto Rico we used to fly gyros with the Bensen Design...My gyro used a very heavy Subaru EA81 engine wiht a 60" propeller and 23 feet McCullough rotor blades.
tonymac96 1 year ago
looks good to me but you either have a wicked cross wind or you need to shim the engine to compensate for "P" factor. So whats the deal? Nice looking machine and a good bit of flying.
flyguy4fun 2 years ago
jonvee - Please explain what the issue was with the rudder ..was the rudder simply not cabled correctly? you must have had a tired right foot ! :-)

He HAs what looks like full deflection of the rudder in straight and level flight
mjok2004 3 years ago
why?
dajsinjo 3 years ago
I think it may be because the rotation of the engine blade at that R.P.M. is causing it to "Yaw" to the left and he needs to "counter" it by applying full right rudder? It looks like a sweet little bird that he built though. I would like to build one just like that to fly myself.
