funk styles are not a part of hip hop it a culture all on its on built on two things...funk music...and funky dancing...it is parralled with Hip Hop yes but thats just because Hip Hoppers took intrest in the dance styles..they two seperate cultures.
Perhaps the terminology was different here in Australia. Back in 83 we called this style "hip hopping" ..."locking" as you put it was a style of popping.

hip hop is not a style of music. It's bboying, djing, mcing and graffiti. the funk styles are part of hip hop.

Locking started in the late '60s. B-boyin'/breakin' started in the early '70s (around '73). Poppin' started in the mid-'70s.
