I´m mexican and I've never heard the "mexican version" before, haha. Sounds funny but the quality is poor. Wanna listen good mexican music? visit my channel :)
Yeah but Richard Ashcroft perfected this song, where the rolling stones couldnt shit with it. so hell with all you stones critics. Richard Ashcroft perfected this. 10 Stars to Richard Ashcroft and the Verve!
that only applies to bands they make money not to amateurs trying to promote their songs.... however in the filthy side of this industry you can't never mess around with the Rolling Stones' and Beatles' lawyers, they will get away everything from u... that's why they can get away with certain plagiarism they've done themselves too....Power!
i think the edward grieg comparison is a bit far out... also, the stones "stole" "the last time" from a north american folksong "this may be the last time" which was interpreted by the staple singers and james brown...
it's true that the verve should have asked for permission but they still made a completely new song out of this so i think it's a little bit unfair taking everthing away from them....
Don't forget the slave spiritual "This May Be The Last Time". But you did so this comment is at a loss anyway. As for the Edvard Grieg link . . . no, that's a coincidence. Andrew Oldman did an orchestrated version of the Rolling Stones song. Not the other way around. The Verve sampled Andrew Oldman's version.
thx for the info!! Im really happy to see those diff versions... =D culture and arts are built on the past! to me as long as a new version gives credit to the one it gets inspiration from then there is nothing wrong with it..
You seem to have quite some gaps in your information (especially egregious is leaving out some of the details of the legal fight between Verve and the Stones). It's an interesting video, but it's hardly definitive in regard to this subject.
this song was taken from de instrumental version of The Last time by Andrew Oldham (1966).... search in youtube "andrew oldham orchestra - the last time" and listen... almost all the instruments and arrangements are the same...
Richard Ashcroft did get permission to used the sample plus the Stones didn't wrote that famous string riff. But Allen Klein who owned the song renig the offer. So got that part of the story wrong.

If the verve plagiarized the stones, than the stones can sue everyone for plagiarism. This is silly

Just to get it clear; Edward Grieg doesn't really have anything to do with this. Right?

So have I got this right? Andrew Oldman gave RIGHTS of the song to the Rolling Stones? Maybe I missed this point.
Unfortunately the Verve got too successful and so the Stones lawyer got a bit greedy. That is the sad truth here.

Mexican Institute of Sound's vocalist had this to say: "I don't always drink before a recording session, but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis."
That was horrible. As for Sugar Daddy...good gosh I need ear bleach.

wait. Didn't it end up that they had to pay 100% of the royaltys to the rolling stones?

What are you talking about?
1- I say "the producer of Stones has rigths for this song", so i'm right
2- Richard Ashcroft has never get permission to used the sample, contrary to what he could say after
3- I have never say that Stones have wrote this string riff, i have said that their producer "have give this song to the stones"
Then in "the story of the bittersweet symphony", it miss the start of the story with the classical anthem!
So 'im rigth and you're wrong..
grungeFR 2 years ago
You're way off base. Actually, you' re not telling any story.
I agree with blachubear. Check "The Bittersweet Symphony Story". It's really good!

Correction,
Richard Ashcroft did get permission to used the sample plus the Stones didn't wrote that famous string riff. But Allen Klein who owned the song renig the offer. So got that part of the story wrong.
