I wonder whether this song is considered to be R & R or just some pop song. 1955 was a pivotable year for pop when rock 'n roll was getting started.....I was about 13 yrs. old that year.
@srercrcr Steve, I can hardly believe that until your comment I had never heard the rendition you cite. So I listened to it, and though I still think the Fontane's did a fine version as is attested by their also hitting #1 on the charts, I tend to agree that Otis W. and the Charms did a truly rich and better developed vocalization of the song. However, music being so subjective, I'm sure there are those who will always prefer one version over another of any song. :-)
about the time this was a hit there was song with lyrics like this;,"let the wind and the rain hit the windowpane,I wont complain anymore, let the snow and the sleet cover up your street,my feet will find your door" I think the title was possibly "Now that I'm in love" somebody help me with this..thanks
This hit by The Fontane Sisters hit #1 on the Top 40 charts and finished at #15 for the year, 1955. 1955; the year that the music scene changed forever. On July 9, Bill Haley and His Comets hit #1 with Rock Around the Clock, signifying the start of the Rock Era.
To all you San Diego State Aztecs fans and Carolina Panthers fans (like myself): This was the #1 song in the USA when John Fox came into the world (February 8, 1955). The start of the Rock Era was on the horizon during this time.
THANKS so much for sharing this treasure of a tune with us! What a bunch of talented gals those sisters were. You're made my day! By the way, I love their version of "Seventeen" too! :)
Correct spelling is Fontane. Originally performed with their brother starting in the late 30's , but he was killed in WW11. Did the original Tennessee Waltz song made popular by Patti Page. Was only a minor hit for them. Went to Dot records and had a string of hits. They performed on Perry Como's radio program. Thet quit performing in the 60's. They retired uncerimoniously. They all have passed. They were very talented to say the least. Similar to the McGuire Sisters. They deserve more credit!
Well, I can only cite you to their recordings on which it's always spelled 'Fontane'. I honestly don't know if the spelling was changed as some names were/are for various reasons, but since the pronunciation would be the same I'd rather doubt it. I thank you for stopping by and wish I could give a more definitive answer. :o)
i like this! 5 stars! and i also like the song SEVENTEEN in 1955 by the fontane sisters.. tho i was born 30 years after it was released *smiles* thanks for posting a good-to-remember-feel-good music.. =)
Jem, you and my granddaughter are the same age; so from that you might guess that I remember the Fontanes and most of their music. Yeee gawds, I'm OLD!! lol
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and leave such a sweet comment. I sincerely appreciate it and am always happy to hear that someone so young can and does appreciate the oldies. :o)
I was just a kid, but I remember the Fontane Sisters and that song, singing on Perry's TV show. After reflecting, I also remember The McGuire Sisters on his show.
At our Farmers Institute each year, I usually sang Perry's songs...my favorite was a skit where I sang to a very pretty girl (we were about 11 or 12), "Someone to Watch Over Me". It is still one of my favorite songs. Gee, I haven't thought about that in many years...thank you, Mattie! It's great to have a fantastic memory :).
Ed, I can't tell you how happy your comment makes me because so often I've had other's videos/songs do the same for me, and yes, it is great to remember the good times. Thank you for your great comment and sharing a memory. :o)
Joyce, how very kind of you to take the time to view my channel and little videos. Lacking in any musical talent whatsoever this is my teensy tinesy contribution to the YT video scene. LOL Thank you sincerely and I'm glad I stirred a memory for you.
Thank you so much for posting this wonderful old song by the Fontane sisters. This song always brings back wonderful memories of my mom. I remember her singing it so many times. I knew that I would find it on youtube. Thank you.
Oh, bless your heart. I'm so glad to have been able to help you find it and that it holds good memories for you. Thank you for sharing this memory with me.
Wow!!! I searched New Milford, NJ because I live in New MIlford and wanted to see if there were any videos on youtube that took place in my town and I stumbled upon this. I am 21 and am a huge doo wop fan and love all the music from the 1950's and I've heard this song before but never knew that The Fontane Sisters were from my town. It's pretty cool knowing that someone from my town actually made it pretty big.
How wonderful that you found my little vid and I'm so happy that the info I provided contained the bit you were looking for. The Fontanes were indeed famous and a very popular trio back then. Thank you for leaving this nice comment. :o)
Alessandra, I'm happy that you were able to find something on my poor little channel to enjoy. I'm fairly new to this making of videos and admittedly not very good at it, but I truly appreciate your generous and kind comment. :o)
I remember and love them all, Max, including the Andrews sisters. Nobody else could ever do "Fever" like Peggy did IMO and Art and Dottie's "Chanson D'Amour...Ahhh. :o) I actually have all of them in my collection too. Much as I love many of today's artists, there are darned few of them that can sound as good as any of these did without any studio inhancements. Thank YOU for the reminiscence, Max.
Sandra, suce a lovely comment on my little effort. It just takes and oldie to pick an oldie, doncha know. LOL Thank you so much, my dear sweet friend.
Hi Mattie, Girl You know how to pick them Golden Oldies, this is fabulous. You did a great job on this video and you sure did your research on it. Awesome video my friend. Thanks for adding it to your channel. Take care and God Bless! 100*. Your friend, Sandra
Bear, after checking out your channel and quickly listening to and viewing a couple of your vids I can only surmise that you are being extremely kind. My little effort here pales terribly in comparison to your work. However, I most sincerely appreciate your kindness. I do, and thank you. Now I'll go back and comment on those vids of yours and I won't have to be kind. Just honest. ;o)
Well I thank you for being my friend, and to see that i have found one that likes the old ones to .I don,t feel like I,m alone now .Nice to meet you and do, write back to me please ,you seem like a nice person to talk to..Thanks ellen...
Now aren't you just the sweetest! I'm happy to have met you too, and found a new friend. I'll most certainly stay in touch and you'll be hearing from me again soon.
