before u even dare criticize- make sure you have done a very thorough analysis. A total amateur 'artist' cant hope to understand even a fraction of the details of a master photographer especially just by a single superficial glance
And YOU dare criticize just by glancin at a video a few times- especially when u have not done any thorough analysis? sorry but ur understandin of physics is sorely lacking
so go frame by frame then - go pixel by pixel, analyze curve by curve. tell me where both there centers are, how is the balance being effected in each frame, can u even see the small subtle 'shaking' motion of the master? or really any high level taiji exponent such as chen xiaowang, chen zhonghua, or even bruce frantzis?
You really think that Chen xiaowang, Yang Chen fu, Ren Guang Yi, and all these great very high level martial arts exponents would be so revered if they were just a "trick"? sorry but chinese folk aint half as stupid as westerners.
There are just so many martial artists & martial arts that just by the vast knowledge & number of exponents would tend to quickly weed out the low quality & exemplify the high quality
Subtlety & true mastery isn't gained in a few days, weeks or months. Its sought, disciplined & attained only after many many years, decades or even centuries
Sure u can learn to do all those kick boxin moves in about a couple days or so & the movements may look big & "pretty", but how good is the balance? its structure? the KIND of strength being applied? the efficiency or economics of strength?
i suppose u have never even heard of a "1 inch punch". If u can't even recognize the concept then it say a lot about who is really the ignorant fool here
why ain't the "1 inch punch" called the "1 foot punch" or the "1 meter punch" or the "1 mile punch"? where is the power comin from? can u even see the 1 inch movement?
There is FAR more to martial arts then just some spinnin back kick or "hook kick", brute force & grunting. Real gong fu doesn't even begin to develop with that fancy external stuff- it develops not in the things which are easily 'visible' but in those things which are more 'invisible'
Thats the diff between high level vs everyone else
sure its 'powerful' seein a spinnin roundhouse kick or a knee that uses brute muscles strength. But how about structure? how is that structure? how balanced are they REALLY? how centered are they?
What is center? unless u understand these ideas, you won't even begin to understand physics or the natural world
Many of the chen family, yang family, sun & even wu families were either military officers or IMPERIAL bodyguards
now either you are sayin they are all incompetent or you are wholly incompetent to not even begin to see the finesse that lies in softness & subtlty.
Why do you even need to use such gross exagerated brutish techniques seen in external arts? why use huge muscles ? what if you just use minimal muscle, mostly tendon strength and structure strength?
That is the question which high level CMA seek to explore
i highly suggest you watch bruce frantzis vids especially on "four energies" or go & experience it for yourself- it literally will revitalize your world view.
I actually watched this a second time, just to see if my first comment was too forward or harsh to the people concerned, but really... This is a farce, it almost makes a mockery of every other person that trains in martial arts -.-
@TheBassBailey Yes it does make a mockery of the concept that brute force requires greater brute force to subdue it. The apparently effortless power used by M.Wu demonstrates just that.
Did anyone else watch this video and just see silly bastards dancing around a little dude? Because thats exactly what I saw to be honest. I really respect martial arts and people who train and hone there skills, but, seriously. We're supposed to believe that you can pretty much evade all attacks without moving... Send this guy into the UFC, the martial artists there wouldn't give him the time of day
You can call it 'real or a tick' only after you have done a very thorough analysis of the practice. And you obviously have not done any analysis. can you even see the subtle movements? the "groundedness", the balance? the "plucking" of opponent's backs which actually precede any movement?
I doubt you saw it- it actually takes some real skill & experience to be able to see such subtle features- its what distinguishes the real master artists from well everyone else
There is much to be said about softness. Those who can't see the strength that lies in softness, subtlety & a well rooted structure have never studied it in much detail in the first place.
Check out Bruce Frantzis videos- he helps to describe & exemplify some of these concepts integral to IMA
@swu880 Have you ever seen a spinning roundhouse kick land flush on somebody's face? Have you ever seen the devastating pain a triangle lock inflicts on its opponent? Or how quickly a person can be brought to tears as their ankle snaps while held in an ankle lock? While these things don't take a 'master', which you obviously are, to see. These do require eyes to see. And if you watched this, watched being the key word, and whole heartedly believe that this is real, PT1
this stuff was used by the military, hell it was developed by a chinese general. and its embedded with much chinese and asian culture- so if you want to understand it, then actually closely analyze it pixel per pixel and understand the culture behind it
@swu880 Then you must be very poor sighted, or you are so horribly weak that you wholly want to believe that there is away to defend yourself from virtually any attack without so much as shrugging your shoulders.. Get with it. I'm not the toughest guy around by far, but I can guarantee 100% that if if a fight between this 'master' and myself accrued, and he implored this technique to fight me. I wouldn't be as eager to jump around him as these two buffoons are. The fight would end quickly PT2
@TheBassBailey Fact: You can only 'see' what you already know. That is because visual data is processed in the brain according to prior associations, therefore it is possible and probable that some " just see silly bastards dancing around a little dude" For those who have seen good Fajin before, this looks like awesome skill, it is sooo good it is pure entertainment. But serious it is and it it certainly the art of evading attacks, believe it!
@tajicentre A very simple test of this skill would be to show it in a real situation, not in a choreographed display of the art., My belief that someone can, in an almost supernatural way, control the movements of another person just by that person touching them is 0%, But people are always going to believe what they want, and I'm without prejudice, I can't say the body isn't without some fascinating capabilities, but I whole-heartedly don't believe this is one of them. Do you have more footage?
@TheBassBailey Re: "real situation".. That was real. Street fighting is not more 'real' than a demonstration. The physics are still the same ... The control is not supernatural! LOL ..It is a trained skill. Many students can uproot others in training too. M.Wu considers that his Master (now deceased) -GrandMaster Hong Junsheng - achieved a far greater level.

fake shit.....saw one video wher old guy without even moving push 2 adults away....try to check other video to confirm this fake shit ...and there are people who still defend this fake shit.....
these guys being pushed are simply far too compliant, simple physics showing when seated that the chair which has no root or abiltiy to coil/spiral or dig into the ground barley moves when the guys bounce off and hop back, newtons law suggest that there would be an opposite reaction yeah? But if the chair cannot root it self why does it slide backwards like the guys do? Demos like this give Taiji a bad rep.Keep it real guys :(
this isn't physics. it's inner power. the person does not require contact with earth to generate power. his "chi" cycle in his body is released and he can manipulate it however he pleases. many taiji instructers know nothing of the power that can be obtained when you train the right way.

nah sorry i live in the US. i just know a lot about it from my family. my grandfather could but he passed away already. i see that you are a taiji practitioner. you know the style of taiji and qigong actually work together. there are some movements in the forms that can only be understood 100% when you learn to use your chi. taiji was originally a martial art made to use inner power. but now for some reason people started doing them separately...
@taijihitman Master Wu has classes in Melb. Australia - drop by for trial session. There is a week long workshop in Jan 2012, including a Jin training course option. Either way you will be convinced :)
@rekcufeht That's right Master Wu does not mention Chi when he is teaching fajin applications. There may be other valid ways to 'understand' fajin, but when training with Master Wu, the explanations are in physical terms. Irrespective of the function of Chi, the body is structured and moved physically. Fajin is a physical and sensory skill that requires physical training and the mind being attentive. Fajin can be is expressed at the minute beginner level or to the high degree demonstrated here.
@Interrogater Master Wu does need to refer to Chi when teaching Fajin skill. It is physical skill with physical requirements, but to learn to Fajin is to "understand" human physics differently to what is considered "normal". I have no doubt there are other ways to understand it, however, it is not correct to say it is not physics either.
If you dont know what you are talking about then maybe dont comment. I have been training with Master Wu for over 10 years and this is a legit demonstration. We train like this every class and the senior students can all generate power like this. Remember this is a demonstration of fajin, not a demonstration of hurting ppl.
Thats exactly it...people tend to confuse a demonstration with an attack...they are NOT the same but they both require the same kind of skills. Its really annoying when people say this or that is not fajin because that is not the way THEY have seen/experienced it. There is no faking when you can see the energy being transfered. And last, Peter Wu may well be respected, of that I have no doubt, but I stand by my comments!
I'm judging him on the basis of what the video is claiming & what I know & what I see! Not his form or fighting techniques.
However, if this example of fajin is anything to go by, then I won't hold my breath!
You however, have judged me without seeing my form, fajin or anything else except for some base drills I give to beginners. Comment on the validity of my drills if you understand them.
I have seen your videos. You appear to know your art but "fajin" does not require upper body strentgh. Watch Peter's videos closely and you will learn more about generating "fajin". The others have posted mixed responses and have reacted naturally as anyone would.
You are absolutely correct fajin does not require upper body strength. The waist is the motor! The legs(feet) take energy from the ground, the waist utilises it and the hands express it - that's what the classics tell us.

@ExplosiveFist Ground energy? Understand the terminology before trying to apply the chinese concepts to your training. The classics ARE being applied here, but do not expect Chinese writings to be literal. Chinese write in pictures - expression is metaphorical. 'Ground' is ones relationship to it and Master Wu is connected thru the chair. You test: sit on a chair to compare the power in your push to one when standing. Not easy. The Classics = Chinese physics lessons. Can you fajin now?
@ExplosiveFist This is wonderful fajin skill! And even more wonderful is that Master Wu conducts classes each week where he teaches fajin skills within the taiji applications. He also conducts specific jin training workshops during the year. This is totally real and totally awesome skill.
The guys doing the attacks are jumping at their Master's will. You can clearly see that!!! In fact, it's embarrassing to watch!!!
If the "Master" was truely issuing the level of fa-jin that the jumps indicate, then these guys would be in serious trouble. I myself have been caught by a light fajin strike in training and have had to stop due to the pain & damage!
@ExplosiveFist, maybe u have been duped by your master? What is this fajin that it can be a "light" "strike". You don't mention the control that happens before the uprooting and the choice that implies. Would a master be sparring if not matched for level of the student and what master would risk his credibility with such lack of self control as to cause pain and damage to his student???? I wonder if u have changed masters now!
The attackers here are jumping backwards at their Master's command, you can clearly see that from the mechanics.
This is embarassing to watch!
If you truely hit someone with the level of fajin as these LEAPS suggest you would be in no state to reattack again!
I have been caught & have struck partners with light fajin in training & we've all had to stop for a good few minutes to recover before continuing with our training!

This was a public demonstration and these BIG guys are working a fine line of demonstrating enough of Peter's skill without getting hurt from it . That is skill in itself! So you are correct it takes stamina to be the guinea pig here repeatedly here! They are not jumping they are re-asserting their equilibrium, controlling or 'grounding' the fajin force as best as they can. Master Wu demonstrates in a measured way - he is not intending harm. He is sharing hard earned skill.

Embarassing demonstartion!

@ExplosiveFist
