I typically watch movies with at least 10 good explosions but I love this movie. It is 1 of about 5 drama movies that I can watch. Any drama made today is pure crap. Jessica Tandy is one of the best actresses that has ever lived. I cannot think of one really good actress today.
@idogkiller01 It takes place partially in the 80's and partially in the 30's. There was never a "lesbian sex scene" in the movie though the director Jon Avnet referred to the food fight scene as his movie's love scene.
Haven't seen this yet. It looks pretty good, but somehow I just don't think it will compare to the book...The book was simply amazing and no doubt has a lot more detail than the movie...
I'm as far away from the South as a person could probably be (racially /geographically/ ideologically). Yet, this movie touched me so deeply it made me want to cry.
@vistaway3008 sadly no...Ninny was married to Idgie's brother Cleo. She had been with the Threadgoode's since she was a little girl and was raised by them (which is why she knows so much)
@vistaway3008 sadly no...in the book its more clear.....Ninny was married to Idgie's older brother Cleo...she was raised by the Threadgoodes' which is why she knows so much.
No joke i have seen this movie over 100 times, i don't think i love a movie more. The movie changed my life...and the way i look at things. I cry everytime i see it, literally. This is my favorite movie and always will be. It's just amazing and you can never get tired of watching it. I wish buddy at the start didn't die and ended up with Ruth so she didn't end up with the guy that beat her...but then i guess their wouldn't have been a story. love this film!
@FlubberElmo23 the script was written to suggest that, but in the book ninny was a separate character with her own lines who really was practically adopted by the threadgoodes and married to idgie's brother cleo. xP
Yes, the final scene does seem to imply that. But even in the movie, Ninny says that she was married to Cleo. It's a single line early on. That makes the ending a little misleading...
wow... did you watch it yet? changed ur mind? i watched this movie when i was just 10... loved it then n now im 14 n i still love it... so did u watch it?? do u like it?
ohh, i love this movie! i watched for the first a few years ago when i would have been about 11. Even though i was so young i just fell in love with the movie and still absolutly love it. My three fave lines of the movie:
"Face it girls, I'm older and i have more insurance."
"If I was gonna kill you i'd use my hands."
"It's funny how a small place like this brought so many people together."
to be honest, if I'd seen the trailer before I'd seen the movie I probably would've passed cause it just doesn't look like it'd be my style. luckily, I caught the movie first and am glad I did because I adore it and I watch it once at least every few months! definitely in my top 5 favorites ever :]
I actually had seen the trailer and REALLY DIDN'T want to see it. But my mom and her friend were going to the movies one day and I wanted to go with... they picked the movie and I fell in love with it.
But you have to admit that the movie never even hints at the fact that they were a "couple." A fantastic story, nonetheless!! Great acting on all accounts, I love Masterson and Bates!
Seriously. It's subtle - subtle enough to ignore it if you want - but it's definately there. The first clue was WAY early - when Buddy and Ruth and Idgie walk across the river; Idgie takes Ruth's hand. She was in love with Ruth from the beginning. Then the bathing/poker scene, Idgie driving to watch Ruth in Georgia, delivering the pie ("If you really love me, you'll leave this minute" - and she does), the food fight, the ending... I think it's really obvious if you're paying attention.
If you see the full length version, it's a little more obvious. The book leaves no doubt that Idgie was gay... if you pay attention. What is unclear is the exact nature of the romance between Ruth and Idgie. Was it "unrequited?" That's left up to the imagination.
The casting of the film was brilliant. Mary Stuart Masterson was Idgie to the "nth" degree. It's funny that it never occurred to me that Fannie Flagg wrote so truly because she IS gay. Makes perfect sense.
Towanda was an "amazing Amazon woman" - she was someone Idgie used as inspiration whenever she did something gutsy (like jump off the train). Then Ninny told Evelyn about Towanda and Evelyn used this fictional Amazon in the same way. Think of her as Xena.
.....you are captivated by the story....the film beautiful. It was a mix of vintage and 80's....not that is certainly a combo...I remember watching it the 1st time....and I use the "older and have more insurance this day as a line...." Priceless...
Jessica Tandy, Kathy Bates....amazing and so ruth & idgie played to us as amazing women who knew how to live in the era....a love story for sure...great video/music...
I love it. This one of the best movies I've ever seen. And the book was the most amazing adventure I've ever had. I love idgie and Ruth and one day I wanna se Whistle Stop even though it's not what's in the book.
Ninny was married to Iggie's brother, so there's no way Ninny was Iggie. Unless you're not bothered by a brother marrying his sister. I think that's not legal in all fifty states.
