This is so funny hearing everyone cryin bout how ther's wudnt burn, from northern ireland, not many headers but a hell of alot of forage harvesters, they all catch fire at some time, weve got deeres and had small fires, one guy has had 6 new hollands burn out in 8 years, on the road and in the field, improper cleaning bein the main reason
I've heard the static electric discharge before. If you wrap a chain on the rear axle and let 6 or 8 inhes of it drag on the ground it will ground the machine.
@freightliner121 Nah i tell you this much. You have a good dry day and some wind and you combine sun flowers nothing will keep the flames away. we dragged poles on the headers, we had chains dragging ,we had dischargers going, but yet the smoldering was there. at the end of the day we took all the plastic off, side doors, pully covers, header covers, you name it .All plastic taken off and we NEVER had a problem again.so it is the plastic that makes it worse i think ???
Can you say watching your money burn?? About $350,000 worth. And yes all colors burn just as hot. Even as a John Deere fan, i have to admit the new STS models seem to burning at a faster rate than the other makes. Someone told me they were investigation static electric discharge in the rotor. It is supposably made worse in dryer conditions. Just what i heard don't know if its true.
@MrLuckytrucker21 Gleaners don't burn nearly as often. Yes, they are less in number, but AGCO is not stupid enough to put the plastic fuel tank under the Engine Floor. Deere has a 250 gallon poly tank underd the engine floor and if the first bearing on say a compressor pulley fails...poof...Nothing burns like a deere...maybe this is a sales tactic to sell more deere's, cause they have figured out how to engineer the insurance burn claims numbers to be a certain number guaranteed.
@iwanaGoFast2010 ....... Harvesting machinery is susceptible to fire simply because of the conditions....lots of moving parts, hot engines, dry chaff, grease......does not matter if it has green, red, yellow or blue paint on it......I've seen JD, NH, Case-IH, and Amadas machines burn in the field......once they start, you basically just have to try and contain the fire.
@iwanaGoFast2010 ....wait til you have a cotton picker catch fire.....not a damn thing you can do but try and dump the load and get the hell away from it!
He was twice ahead while you guys were tryin to keep up....coming from a combine tech....what usually happens is the guy in the cab is to lazy to get off his ass and clean the trash build out like he is supposed to.
poor combine...most of the problems are from electric motor..i was wondering when my combine have problems with electricmotor and in a few sec combine can burn...
Too much plastic and fiberglass on those combines especially the fuel tank. Where did JD get these engineers? Come on, a plastic fuel tank on a combine is inviting disaster when it is behind and under the engine compartment. Sparks from the exhaust, plenty of air from the fan, and lots of dry fuel for a fire to start on top of a PLASTIC fuel tank.
I'm sooo sorry to see this. My condolences to you. Bearing or electrical--who knows? It went just way too fast. I am greatly relieved to know your operator made it out--just in time.
