Wow. There's a prologue cutscene? That would have been helpful to know before I watched the rest of the cutscenes in the ENTIRE game. I was so confused the whole time! This would have cleared things up a bit.
I remember when I started playing the game. "Ugh, the voice acting is as bad as it was in X," I thought to myself as I reached the assassination scene. Eventually, though, I realized that this game probably has the best voice acting in a video game yet, and when I watched that scene again I realized that it was actually the *character* who couldn't act well, not the actor himself.
Vaan is not the main character. It's considered an ensemble cast. There's some debate about it, but a lot of people think if there IS a main character, that would be Ashe. Although I think the story was Basch was going to be the main character for the game, but they decided they needed someone younger to be more appealing so they created Vaan and stuck him center in all the promotional art, though he does little. That's what revenant wings is for. :\
Personally I think Vaan wasn't the main character at all. The reason, in my eyes, that he seems so weak is because he was never meant to really stand out from the others. All the characters in this game's group of heroes were supposed to be looked at like a unit, not as separate entities where one stands out as the lead. I always wondered why the muffled voices, I thought it must be they were running out of space on the disc (not sure if they used a dual layer DVD or what) and they had to use low bitrate for the cutscene sounds...because the game has SOOO much stuff in it...otherwise they might have ran into a PS2 limitation (besides the ones they already had run on, such as the jaggies)...

The fact that they shoe horned those two characters in and then made Vaan the main protagonist was kind of obvious throughout the entire game. Maybe he would have worked as a supporting character, but he was a weak choice as the lead. Besides, Balthier made it very clear that he was suppose to be the lead.
No...I Agree with your statement! It would've been More interesting if Reks was apart of the Main Cast instead of Shoving Vaan in! When you look at it, that whole scene with him being stabbed and watching Basch (Noah) Being Arrested was for a reason had me thinking he was going to discover the truth behind it all!

Hmmmm...that is true (nice English lesson there by the way). I just feel that Vaan didn't really do much for him to be called a protagonist or part of a bildungsroman. I don't know, to me he didn't have enough cutscenes for me to feel bad for him or for me to feel anything at all which is ridiculous because he's introduced first and is in the game the longest. That is enough cutscenes and time for the writers to put some character development.

Vaan is in 2 other games spanning 5 years(?) where he continues to grow into himself, as he is just a boy. If we had started with say Balthier from age 16 it would be the same gradual change that took 6 years to notice except there would be awesome sex and wit involved.

I liked the story for this Final Fantasy, but it's definitely one of the weaker titles in the series.
The battle system was a major problem, not to mention the license board as well. The characters were a bit of a problem too. I mean, what was the point of putting Vaan in the game? He was useless...

Has anyone seen Gurren Lagann? This has some similar concepts. In Gurren Lagann because Simon's (main character) brother (kamina) died, simon began to doubt himself, but it's also because of Kamina's death that simon got the strength to believe in him self, and not with his brother's urging to believe in himself, but he saw his own power. The same thing applies to Vaan and Reks. Because reks died, vaan lost a part of himself, but became something more thanks to everyone

After watching the scene for a few times I could now tell that it was indeed Noah who killed Reks, not Basch. Basch has a lower voice and Noah has a little mole below his left eye. These two look a tiny bit different when observed more closely...
Poor Basch, he had to look on while watching his brother play him as traitor...he couldn't do anything because he was held down by soldiers :(

You know, I was wondering that too. Cause I played the beginning a second time, and I noticed the difference in voice, and it really confused me. Thanks for clearing this up =)

It is. But the problem with me is that I don't notice details like that until the second time around. That's why I was confused; I didn't hear the difference in voice the first time around xD

I don't get why some characters were made to be hideous, Vaan is ugly, Basch is ugly.. but I guess it's difficult to make different faces if you want them all to be beautiful.. Anyway cutscene graphics are better than ever before in FFXII.. WOW

All the voices sound weird. Ashe sounds like a old woman, Larsa sounds like a girl, Balthier is just...odd. Really, not so sure what Square was doing with this one.
