I think it's terrible. They've taken a classic, and turned it into a pop-sounding song. I don't think anyone should cover a song as powerful as this, because you need to be able to feel the lyrics, be passionate about them. It now sounds like a Joss Stone song, which is a terrible thing. They may be talented, but in my opinion, they've destroyed a classic.
So your tribute to this scene is to record this video and then immediately break up the group, stop touring, and say "see you in the future at some point yet to be determined"?
There's never a good time to say goodbye, is there?!
The good thing is that everyone is getting their footing, after as many as 8 years of non-stop touring.
No desire to disappoint and that being said, I understand your frustration! Bands, can be unpredictable, even for the people involved! That also means, that different opportunities are ahead, so keep your ears open!
Listen to Kellin Watson's When Is Enough Enough. If it is not about Sarah Dugas then it is about someone very like her. How does your "disappointment" compare to an artist's exhaustion? Read some biogs and learn the truth about life on the road.
@bloosville A fan is allowed to be disappointed when a favorite group splits up, especially when they have made a big deal about acquiring a new singer that will bring "a new style" to the group. I had been looking forward to seeing where the post-Jessee Havey Duhks would go. Likewise, I was assumed it was hoped that Sarah would be remembered years later as the group's principal vocalist.
But this as is, with only the one album, ends up looking more like they couldn't make it without Havey.
@redjameskidd ...of course not. This video makes it sound like they feel the responsibility to keep bringing the folk music indefinitely. Which clearly did not happen.
There is exactly one appropriate reaction when you hear this song. You should think "Wow. That's fantastic. I can't wait to hear more music from them." But unfortunately, you won't be. That's the definition of disappointment. Even if you understand the realities of trying to be a band. And that's why I'm disappointed.
@bloosville ...even though that isn't the case. I enjoyed the different direction of Fast Paced World, but standing by itself as the last Duhks album, it comes off as an aberration to the band's other, former 3 albums.
Likewise, I was annoyed by this wonderful, beautiful song, (and it is beautiful) because they cite all these great folk performers who performed forever with the intent of honoring them and comparing themselves...and is there a hint that this group will break up within months?
I miss Jessee

Brilliant cover. She sang the hell out of that song and made it her own. Never heard of these guys until yesterday.

@bloosville I'll be keeping my eyes open for their next projects, whatever they are. I am sure they will be enjoyable as well.
By the way---has anybody else been waiting for Jessee Havey do make a recording since leaving the Duhks? Is that ever going to happen?

I heard this song on the way to work this morning. Had never heard of the Duhks...but fell in love with her voice and their sound. Good stuff!
