@MrDavondrick The books are more romance than it is action (created long before Miller wrote Twilight - which is rubbish IMHO). True Blood, however attracts a lot of guys. I was talked into watching it by 2 straight men who loved the story/action etc. They could give a rats who Sookie gets involved with tho.
Myself, I could't stand the books. There are just soooo terribly written, it's a shock they were able to create such an amazing show out of this sh*t. Probably cause the show is only loosely basen on the books, although at times Sookie still pisses me off^^
@GrLuie I don't mind the books that much, since in some ways, it has better characterizations (Sookie at the end of the tenth book is rather badass, whereas in the series, she doesn't develop as a character, at all). But they got what they were aiming for - much deeper secondary characters. Plus, TB!Eric >>>>> SVM!Eric. And Lafayette. But I agree that the books aren't as impressive as, for example, Anne Rice's in the prose department. They're too much like fanfictions at times.
I totally agree with you. the books have some great ideas, and the basic outline of the eric-sookie relationship is pretty awesome in terms of narrative potential, but the execution is mostly lacking and the writing lackluster. TB has its flaws too, but TBEric is amazing imo.
The only thing where the show truly fails is Sookie herself, who's mostly being used as a mindless, inconsistent plot device. I hope this changes next season.
Well, I think her being generally forgiving is nice. The problem is that she tends to get randomly angry for the wrong reasons, and to not recognize when she's acting like an idiot herself. She just spends most of the time NOT THINKING, and that's what really gets on my nerves.
Also, I'm with you about her forgiving Bill too easily. With Eric though, she doesn't really "forgive" him, It's just that she likes/understands him more than she consciously realizes imo.
I see your point - at times, it's really just like she gets angry completely randomly, what is maybe the biggest problem. My point is, I'm all for being forgiving, you know, but how is that she's forgiving in one moment (especially when the guilty party is her beloved betraying, conniving boyfriend) but why then she gets annoyed with people who didn't really do anything to her?
And yeah, you're right about Eric, though her treating him with such distrust is a little bit ironic...

Their pillow talk is foreshadowing all the things happen in the future (in the books). This really gives me hope, that Alan Ball and co. would never ignore the stuff from the books that is important to build up the dynamic between Eric and Sookie.

I honestly dont give a shit about half of the characters on this show. I wish Alan Ball would kill them off so we could have more screen time for the good characters. Eric, Bill and Sookie are the main characters of the show and people like Crystal and Sam's family are getting more screen time than them. The only other characters I want to see are Pam (she's fucking awesome!), Jessica and Hoyt, and Lafayette. Eveyone else can fuck off. I just had to get that off my chest.
Looks like I'm definitely in the minority here because I *gasp* prefer Sookie with Bill. Bill is flawed and feels more human but also has this "you have no idea how dark I go" vibe on the inside. Don't get me wrong, I love Eric, but I love him as he is now: the wrench in the S/B relationship. I love his cold, calculating, arrogant demeanor and the closer he gets to Sookie, the more that breaks, and I don't want it to.
@AWickedMind if bill remains with sookie that i will have lost all respect for her. i dont think its plausible at this point. bill has abused her , lied to her, manipulated her from day 1. plus he is boring and selfish. yes, eric is cold and calculating but what makes him interesting is that he displays these moments of vulnerability that seem real. everything bill does just seems calculated when it comes to sookie,because he wanted her blood and was sent by the queen.
@ankatz - I think Bill walks a tight rope to try to keep himself and Sookie safe, and is legitimately in love with her but reported on her to placate the queen and keep her away from Bon Temps. Bill didn't know what Sookie's blood could do, we saw that he was surprised at its effects. Anything Bill is guilty of, so is Eric, but to a worse degree IMO. Bill drained her when he was delerious and out of his mind, Eric fed her to Russell and drained her himself to satisfy a personal vendetta.
@jessqtpi69 In order to satisfy his personal vendetta. But, Eric's motivations aside, that doesn't make Bill any more guilty. He had no idea what he was doing, nor did he have a choice. Dumbass Sookie slices her arm open & begs him to drink from her, then, OMG SHOCK, he can't stop because his instincts have totally taken over. The man burnt himself to a crisp to save her in S1. I just really think Bill's getting a bad rap cause the audience prefers Eric's ass to his and they want something new.

He is a threat to EVERYONE, including Bill and ESPECIALLY Sookie, since he was already after her.
Using Sookie was the last chance to defeat Russell and save everybody. Eric didn't want to hurt her but then he had to be rational and to the only logical thing. the other option was to die and let Russell reign. Now Eric is dying anyway, but taking the king with him.
@trixiedoor - Those are valid points, but I still stand that Sookie and Bill's relationship is worth the troublesome times with what Bill has proven and that bouncing from one vampire to another is not going to fix any of those problems. It'll be "same issues, different height & hair color". Let's keep in mind that Hadley revealed to Eric what Sookie was and he didn't tell her either. Also, the most important factor here that no one's considering is that Sookie, at best, barely even likes Eric.
@AWickedMind i am sorry, but you are wrong in my opinion. your first mistake being thinking that eric and bill are the same. they are not the same at all. bill is weak, manipulative, bratty, impulsive, boring, and frankly stupid. at least eric did not base a romantic relationship with her on a lie and never lied to her outright when asked about something.
at least eric treats sookie with some measure of independence, not bill's sookeh is MINE all the time.
@ankatz You're right, they're not the same. Eric at his heart actually seems to have the weakness, which he was trained and told to cover up by Godric. Bill struggles to try to gain back his humanity, but Loraina (sp?) drained it out of him a while back. I think he's truly dark at his core, but he loves Sookie for offering him a spark of warmth and comfort and that's where the fierce possessiveness and protectiveness comes from. She's the only light he has and it's sadly beautiful.
@AWickedMind Well, this is obviously a matter of opinion, but I personally feel that what Sookie and Bill have is not necessarily so strong, and I find their relationship pretty unhealty.
Saying all vampires are the same is like saying all people are the same.... I think Bill and Sookie's deepest problems are not a direct consequence of Bill being a vampire per se, things are more complicated than that...

When he found out what Sookie was, Eric assumed that Bill, having been sent by the queen, also knew everything or at least something, and maybe he had already told Sookie, or maybe not.... anyway then when he had that talk with Bill and Sookie, she said now she knew what she was, so...
About Sookie not liking Eric, well, that's a typical case of strong subconscious feelings that are externalized in the form of anger and disdain.
@trixiedoor - I think we could go back and forth with this for a while lol. There's plenty of material for debate. How about we call a draw and go back to our Team Eric and Bill corners? Besides, we already know Sookie's going to end up bumping uglies with Eric sometime in the near future. Who she ends up with for good is up in the air, although I think Bill and I have an advantage in Allan Ball also preferring him.
@AWickedMind I totally agree that Bill loves Sookie, and wants to protect her, but the fact is that he DID come to her under false pretenses, and after all that's happened to them this season, even while they were broken up, he STILL didn't tell her the truth. I don't really blame Bill for the draining, even though he was apparently conscious enough to put a hand on her mouth when she was screaming, but whatever. What I blame him for is his hypocrisy in accusing Eric when he is no better.
@AWickedMind and it was obvious to everyone i think that eric did not want to drain sookie, but if he didnt than she would be dead anyway, along with the rest of the world when russell got to it.
@ankatz I also think it was also fairly obvious to everyone that Bill didn't want to drain Sookie either. It wasn't a choice on his part, it was survival instinct. Eric, instead of taking some of Sookie's blood and bringing it to Russell, chained Sookie and Bill up and brought him to them, knowing he couldn't control Russel, then walked out on a suicide mission leaving Sook bleeding to death and Bill unable to help her.
@AWickedMind Old blood and fresh blood from the source don't work the same. Moreover, Russell would've been even more suspicious being presented with a bottle of blood... he would have wanted to see the source.
As I said, NOBODY can control Russell, the choice for Eric was to die in vain fighting the much stronger king, and leave everybody in peril, OR try a desperate plan to leave everyone but him alive and safe.
I'm quite sure Pam will help S and B as soon as she gets over her grief-shock.
@trixiedoor Talbot & Russell were dining on bottled blood just a few episodes back. Plus, Russell need only do what he ended up doing anyway to prove that Sookie's blood would work: make Eric drink it first and test it out. Anyway, I'm not arguing that I don't like Eric. He's one of my faves. But I love him as he is and I want him to stay tough and distant and threatening. I don't want to see another human-whipped monster and that's what's happening the closer he gets to Sookie.
@AWickedMind yes I know they CAN drink bottled blood. But it's fair to assume that, just as vampire blood, fairy blood wouldn't have the same effects if not drunk straight from the source.
I too love Eric as he is , but his cold facade is not ALL that he is, just part of a very complex personality. Good characters are such because they are dinamic and always evolving without losing their core traits, which I think they're successfully doing with Eric.
@trixiedoor I think Eric had good intentions of saving Sookie, did you see how he cuddled her hair, it was obvious how hard it is for him to bite her knowing that it will put her in danger.
I can´t stop wondering, since this is a dream, if this is Sookies "ideal picture" of Eric or if she indeed see a good man in Eric.. Telepath and half supe as she is.. I vote for the latter.
@EllerHurOk I thought about that too. I guess it could be a mixture of both, but mostly I think that's how she subconsciously already sees him: she knows that there's a part of him that he keeps hidden and she wishes to be the one he reveals it to.
She also wants him to see what others can't see about HER. Funnily enough Eric's daydream expresses this same longing for intimacy and understanding.
The dream scenes may be cheesy, but they're far more complex and revealing than people think.

According to me, she sees Eric as the good man as he is - partly because of the sight of Eric on the roof, showing his (humanly) love for Godric, which I think totally knocked her off of her feet ,and partly for her physical attraction to him (from the first time they met). But, as you say, Eric is definitely having the same wish (part 9?) and in part 10 they at least go halfways..

But I agree that the books aren't as impressive as, for example, Anne Rice's in the prose department. They're too much like fanfictions at times.

I totally agree with you. the books have some great ideas, and the basic outline of the eric-sookie relationship is pretty awesome in terms of narrative potential, but the execution is mostly lacking and the writing lackluster. TB has its flaws too, but TBEric is amazing imo.
The only thing where the show truly fails is Sookie herself, who's mostly being used as a mindless, inconsistent plot device. I hope this changes next season.

Well, I think her being generally forgiving is nice. The problem is that she tends to get randomly angry for the wrong reasons, and to not recognize when she's acting like an idiot herself. She just spends most of the time NOT THINKING, and that's what really gets on my nerves.
Also, I'm with you about her forgiving Bill too easily. With Eric though, she doesn't really "forgive" him, It's just that she likes/understands him more than she consciously realizes imo.

My point is, I'm all for being forgiving, you know, but how is that she's forgiving in one moment (especially when the guilty party is her beloved betraying, conniving boyfriend) but why then she gets annoyed with people who didn't really do anything to her?

I honestly dont give a shit about half of the characters on this show. I wish Alan Ball would kill them off so we could have more screen time for the good characters. Eric, Bill and Sookie are the main characters of the show and people like Crystal and Sam's family are getting more screen time than them. The only other characters I want to see are Pam (she's fucking awesome!), Jessica and Hoyt, and Lafayette. Eveyone else can fuck off. I just had to get that off my chest.

Looks like I'm definitely in the minority here because I *gasp* prefer Sookie with Bill. Bill is flawed and feels more human but also has this "you have no idea how dark I go" vibe on the inside. Don't get me wrong, I love Eric, but I love him as he is now: the wrench in the S/B relationship. I love his cold, calculating, arrogant demeanor and the closer he gets to Sookie, the more that breaks, and I don't want it to.

@ankatz - I think Bill walks a tight rope to try to keep himself and Sookie safe, and is legitimately in love with her but reported on her to placate the queen and keep her away from Bon Temps. Bill didn't know what Sookie's blood could do, we saw that he was surprised at its effects. Anything Bill is guilty of, so is Eric, but to a worse degree IMO. Bill drained her when he was delerious and out of his mind, Eric fed her to Russell and drained her himself to satisfy a personal vendetta.

He is a threat to EVERYONE, including Bill and ESPECIALLY Sookie, since he was already after her.
Using Sookie was the last chance to defeat Russell and save everybody. Eric didn't want to hurt her but then he had to be rational and to the only logical thing. the other option was to die and let Russell reign. Now Eric is dying anyway, but taking the king with him.

@trixiedoor - Those are valid points, but I still stand that Sookie and Bill's relationship is worth the troublesome times with what Bill has proven and that bouncing from one vampire to another is not going to fix any of those problems. It'll be "same issues, different height & hair color". Let's keep in mind that Hadley revealed to Eric what Sookie was and he didn't tell her either. Also, the most important factor here that no one's considering is that Sookie, at best, barely even likes Eric.

@ankatz You're right, they're not the same. Eric at his heart actually seems to have the weakness, which he was trained and told to cover up by Godric. Bill struggles to try to gain back his humanity, but Loraina (sp?) drained it out of him a while back. I think he's truly dark at his core, but he loves Sookie for offering him a spark of warmth and comfort and that's where the fierce possessiveness and protectiveness comes from. She's the only light he has and it's sadly beautiful.

Saying all vampires are the same is like saying all people are the same.... I think Bill and Sookie's deepest problems are not a direct consequence of Bill being a vampire per se, things are more complicated than that...

When he found out what Sookie was, Eric assumed that Bill, having been sent by the queen, also knew everything or at least something, and maybe he had already told Sookie, or maybe not.... anyway then when he had that talk with Bill and Sookie, she said now she knew what she was, so...
About Sookie not liking Eric, well, that's a typical case of strong subconscious feelings that are externalized in the form of anger and disdain.

I don't really blame Bill for the draining, even though he was apparently conscious enough to put a hand on her mouth when she was screaming, but whatever. What I blame him for is his hypocrisy in accusing Eric when he is no better.

@ankatz I also think it was also fairly obvious to everyone that Bill didn't want to drain Sookie either. It wasn't a choice on his part, it was survival instinct. Eric, instead of taking some of Sookie's blood and bringing it to Russell, chained Sookie and Bill up and brought him to them, knowing he couldn't control Russel, then walked out on a suicide mission leaving Sook bleeding to death and Bill unable to help her.

Plus, Russell need only do what he ended up doing anyway to prove that Sookie's blood would work: make Eric drink it first and test it out. Anyway, I'm not arguing that I don't like Eric. He's one of my faves. But I love him as he is and I want him to stay tough and distant and threatening. I don't want to see another human-whipped monster and that's what's happening the closer he gets to Sookie.

I too love Eric as he is , but his cold facade is not ALL that he is, just part of a very complex personality. Good characters are such because they are dinamic and always evolving without losing their core traits, which I think they're successfully doing with Eric.

@EllerHurOk I thought about that too. I guess it could be a mixture of both, but mostly I think that's how she subconsciously already sees him: she knows that there's a part of him that he keeps hidden and she wishes to be the one he reveals it to.
She also wants him to see what others can't see about HER. Funnily enough Eric's daydream expresses this same longing for intimacy and understanding.
The dream scenes may be cheesy, but they're far more complex and revealing than people think.
