Tommy Dee was the one that originally sung and recorded the song but it was Eddie Cochran that actually wrote it. The Cochran verson was not realeased until after his own death a year later. He recorded his within a week of the accident
@xlCoyoteHD As you might have noticed by now , this is the original. I was under the illusion like you . I think this version is best ....one mans meat i suppose.
i wish i could have been in my late teens when these guys were alive....what i wouldnt give to travel back and meet these legends...im gonna learn this song on the guitar...thanks for putting up this video
@xlCoyoteHD Tommy Dee wrote this song like days after the three died. Tommy Dee Wrote the original. Eddie liked it alot and decided he would do his own version of the song with some of his own lyrics...they are both very good but i like Eddie Cochrans alot more because he put his heart into it when singing it. you could hear the sadness in his voice as it broke when he sang and he wanted to leave it like that because when he heard it and everybody heard it they would know how he felt...
Being from Mason City Iowa, and working in Clear Lake.....it was a major tragedy that lives on every year at the Surf Ballroom. I worked at that airport...and also seen the crash site. Devastating to lose such talent
Eddie Cochran's version also great.. real eerie that he would die in a car accident shortly after. Clear Lake Iowa, if in vicinity a must stop here...Surf Ball Room and crash site
Some background on "Three Stars" - This is the original song released in April 1959 by Tommy Dee. Dee was a DJ at KFXM in San Bernadino at the time of this, his only hit. It reached # 8 on 4/13/1959. It's a pretty rare 45 hit, and likely has had very little radio play since 1959. A little "dated", but a pretty song that got a fair amount of radio play in the months after the plane crash. I remember seeing it being played on American Bandstand at the time.
I was 16 when we heard the news. All three were popular and received radio play... Buddy being the star that had really "arrived", with That'll Be The Day hitting number one, followed by the hits Peggy Sue, Oh Boy, and Maybe Baby. My personal all time favorite was recorded in New York for Coral in January 1959 just before his death: It Doesn't Matter Anymore reached number 13 nationally on 3/09/59. I can't hear any of their songs without it still bringing a tear to my eyes. Rock on!
@MrKatyPerryfan Alright, son, that is actually not just a stupid statement, but an insulting one. This song was a memorial to three people who had families, and many people who loved their music. Sure its a long ago, but Jesus, man, have a little respect on a MEMORIAL song, oh wait, you freaking people nowadays, no dang literacy, listening to your crappy "gangstaz", no respect for the decased, and not a clue about real music of the 50's-early90's. Just buzz off, or grow respect!
i was 14 the day the music died. the entire jr high was in a very somber mood. i never knew who recorded this tribute song until now. thank you for bringing back memories of a more innocent time from long ago.
On the left stand Ritchie Valens A young boy just seventeen Just beginning to realize And explore his teenage dreams Why did God call him oh so far away Maybe to help some boy or girl Who might have gone astray With his star shining in the dark On a lonely night to light the path And show the way, the way that's right Gee we're gonna miss you, Everybody sends their love
This is the version of this song that was played all over radio in the East. Thanks for putting a great video together, complete with lyrics!! Beautifully done. 1,000 ****'s for your work.
Singer Herschel Almond had a tribute record also in 1959 on Ace Records called the Great Plane Tragedy. Different song than this one. This version is the ultimate.

In those days, the difference between 6th grade and high school seemed like a 100 years. At this point in life, I have friends 20 years older and 30 years younger and everywhere else in between. There is no age restrictions for Doo Wop lovers. We have a common bond that age cannot divide. Thanks for all of your great posts.
This song gave me goose bumps, unfortunately, they're gone but never forgotten...thanks Harry for creating this lovely video. Many have gone on and have left their legacies behind for us to cherish their marvelous music, again thanks. Miss I.
