  • my floyd has too many springs soomuch that the arm is pointing up.. so what should i do to make it float?

  • Do Dean Razorbacks (7-String) have a floating trem?

  • So, what would I do if I hypothetically wanted to have the guitar in drop C versus standard tuning, and wanted to change to heavier gauges of strings so that they were tighter in that tuning?

  • Thank you! This helped me so much!

  • thank 4 the vid got a couple questions 4 u i dont have a block of wood i was told by a friend who is a guitarist that a deck of card would work is that true an the other question is i plan to change my gauge strings from 9 gauge to 10 gauge how do i adjust the action on the tremolo do u have a video for that

  • I have a question. My Ibanez RG320PG P1 have a different bridge and I'm wondering, should I trim the strings where the fine tuners are?? Does it matter which bridge I have? PLEASE ANSWER. cheers.

  • @Voddgreen Seems you have Edge III (in vide, it is original edge ,I believe), which is kinda same setup-wise, as new Edge Pros. If you would have lo-pro it is pretty same just the string locking studs and fine tuners have another position

  • this is the tremolo that the Ibanez RG4EXQM1-TGB has right?

  • @ovrdrvn i managed to change the strings but my 6th string keeps going out of tune...any tips?

  • @SugarDaddyLucifer I am also the 100,100th viewer. High five!

  • Just wanted to say thanks. I never seen someone leave the ball on the string. Anyhow your video was very helpful. I appreciate it.

  • @c197373 You're very welcome!

  • is it okay to go from standard to drop C to drop D on the ibanez double locking trems?

    any advice?

  • when I take my block of wood out, and i go to tune it perfectly, I can't tune one string without making the others go out of tune, and by the time i'm 5 minutes into trying to tune.........a string breaks... someone help!!! i miss my whammy bar.

  • can u put a licensed floyd rose on an ibanez grga32t?

  • Comment removed

  • Just strung up two Edge-Floyds and NOW I watch this! Good vid guys, EV (Lynn Valley).

  • GENIUS!!!!

  • THANKS! I am new to using a F.R. trem and was told all kinds of scary stories about string changes. Your video was brilliant and I did my first change ever in 90 mins including tuning! I didn't have the block of wood, so I changed one at a time and then tuned all at the end. I loved the idea of keeping the ball ends on, worked like a charm.

  • You my friend, are a fucking genious :P

  • Hey, at 1:44 you just (or Steve) pulls/pull back the tremolo bar and put the piece of wood in the bridge and on my guitar it isn't that high, it's not all the way down but it isn't as high and when I pull the tremolo bar to get it high enough it feels like It's going to break, so what should I do

  • @guitaristshobi plz tell me, don't leave me hanging!!! xP

  • Pt. 2 - I don't understand your "wood block" under the bridge idea. I did that and after cutting the strings to a certain length with it still in place, the strings are now too short and are pulling the Trem mechanism up too high, making the action too high.

  • Nice Video, Thanks, but I will NEVER buy an Ibanez, due to the incredibly complicated, annoying bridge/nut string changing setup, designed to punish guitar players. (I'm trying to change my son's S series)

  • @dadders6 Its not Ibanez guitars, the complexity of the string change system is due to the Floyd Rose Tremolo in the guitar. I have an Esp LTD MH series that has an exact same setup as this Ibanez

  • Nice video, thanks, but DEATH TO IBANEZ for making the most overly complicated bridge/nut re-stringing monstrosity, designed by evil overlords to punish guitar players. Re-stringing Fenders and Gibsons is natural and easy. I will never buy an Ibanez (I had to change my young sons' S series - what a pain)

  • @dadders6

hey...man..Ibanez guitars are made for guitar players.for us will know how to do the hocus pocus on a Floating trem and re-stringing it....remeber that patience is a virtue.

  • No matter what I try the strings keep poping out

  • Watch Ibanez.com shows you how to do it right... to learn how to do it right you should change strings one at a time dont change them all at once !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • do all floating floyd rose trems have the string locking thing on the back of the bridge because mine has a large enough space for the string to be inserted into the back end of the bridge. please help with any info you have.

  • Comment removed

  • Steve! Thank you soooo much for your help Bro! Mystery solved! Ok, wish me luck.

  • When I try, the strings pop out of the saddle when I tighten them up...I don't want to tighten it too tight as this will apparently damage it, is there anything else that could be going wrong?

  • what do you do 4 and edge 3 temelo?!!?!!

  • hey can you do this same method on a non floating floyd?

  • hi ive wasted 2 sets of strings trying to change them, and its my first floyd rose floating trem thingie. everytime i change the strings and tune them up to around the correct tuning range, i realise the trem has snook upwards and it is ridiculously angled towards the bridge. do you know why this is and how to change it? Im guessing it is something do do with these fine tuners and they need adjusting, but like.. how do i know when theyre set at a good level? sorry for my low guitar IQ. thanks

  • Well.... I need a block of wood.

  • Do i have to stick the wood underneath the trem if im re-string only one string?

  • subscribe this dude is funny :D !

  • I coudln't find a block of wood in my house, so I used 9V battery. Everything worked like a charm. Thank you sir.

  • what to do if someone took off all strings at once and Bridge is now folded back? please advice (havent strunged the guitar yet)...

  • @guitaristshobi If the springs are still hooked onto the toneblock of the trem (ie - nothing's come loose or fallen off of your trem unit!), just raise the trem back up using the bar (making sure that the knife-edges are correctly seated on the two main posts) and place a suitable block under it to support it while you finish your string change.

If you are concerned that something may be out of place or whatever, then do take your guitar to a reputable guitar store / tech to have it checked.

  • @guitaristshobi I did the same thing here, and I regret it...SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP!!!

  • @mhmdtarek94 I just came up with a technique :) that is sooooo easy & really helpful :)

  • Steve is cool.

  • wow thanks so much that sick helped i wish i would've seen that before i restrung my guitar now i have to adjust the neck and everything

  • ok so as long as you block the trem you are ok to take all of the strings off?

  • Guitarded....I like that word, worth using :)

  • @missmeli273 It's more than just a word....it's a way of life!

  • Genius!

  • whats the best string for ibanez guitar?

  • @Aerodynamic14 Most are strung with D'Addario EXL120 (9-42 gauge) from the factory for standard tuning.

  • Wow, i actually feel like i can do this myself!!!

  • id have to say the Edge III trem system is more difficult to work with than the floyd rose system

  • This is an absolutely fantastic video. I would have never thought of putting the ball ends up by the tuners. I prefer to do it one string at a time though, last time I took all of the strings on my SG it got reeaaally wacky, had to have it set up again O_o

  • thx man u solved all my guestions thx alot

  • is it okay to remove all the pressure from the neck by removing all strings at once? there was a big discussion about this at harmony central, after an interview with Slash. the later told some mag that after cutting all strings at once on his LP, the neck got warped beyond any adjustment or repair. isn't what you do is sort of the same? can removing all strings at once possibly damage the neck?

  • @lowyaw I doubt such thing could actually happen.

Yes it's true that you're removing a lot of tension from the neck, but simply using the whammy bar also generates massive changes in tension, which the neck has to withstand anyway without cracking/warping etc... Naturally, guitar necks are engineered to be extremely strong, even on guitars without Floyds.

I've both a les paul & an RG420, I've always remove all the strings at once when I change them and I've had no problems whatsoever...

  • my string gets out of that hole (the one that is seen on 6:30) when i try to tune it. can someone help me out?

  • I gotta problem with my floyd rose pro. Every string stays in tune, except the high E string. It's the weirdest thing, because the locking nut is completely locked, all three pads, and the tremolo is level like it should be. It might be the brand string I use, because I tried another string brand, and didn't notice the problem with the different brand strings. If anyone has any ideas, let me know.

  • @zeppelinhalen08 Tension problem sounds like. Screw in the springs on that side of the string more

  • I have heard that the head can break when you take all strings of at the same time, and not only with Floyd rose systems. Am I the only one who has heard that?

  • jem neck on an rg760 body? creative. and ppl, the wood is a good way to do it but its not the only way. just do the strings 1 at a time and the trem will never fall. just take a string off, put the new one on, tune it and move on to the next

  • For an expert he doesnt know how to balance his floating trem

  • Comment removed

  • Fantastic video, aided me immensely, first time trying this method after 6 years of owning my RG, will defo stick to this!

  • GOD bless that block of wood

  • Why are you a wimp for using .009- .042? I must be a wimp too xD

  • My fucking tremelos fallen through!!!

  • This helped except what if you didnt use the block and the trem went into the guitar.. Then you put stings in and tightend them to where the trem is now rly high ? How should i fix it

  • This helped except what if you didnt use the block and the trem went into the guitar but you put strings in and now the trem floating rly high....? Idk

  • i would a sweater too with my name on it, same like Steve

  • Yikes, still a bit ascared, but with the info gained from this video think ill be able to hack it, THANKS STEVE!

  • Thank you so much!!! My hubby de-strung my Ibanez with one foul (not fell) swoop of the wammy... it was my dad's and very important that it be done right. Easy as pie. Thanks so much again!

  • where do you get the little screw driver to release the tension of the lockpad? i need one.

  • @glitcha100 the hardware store lol

  • Comment removed

  • i used to change my strings on the floyd the old fashioned way, one at a time putting the string through the bridge first, but this way is so much faster

  • Just got my new Ibanez with an Edge 3 and tried changing the strings to 11 gagues not even sure if its going to work after seeing the Trem dive bomb into the guitar. Tried tightning the strings it didn't even phase the trem.....but now after watching this video I have a feeling I put the strings on incorrectly so will get a couple more sets of strings and give it a go this way......there are no strings on it atm........but the wood block trick should still work.

  • @GDragonSword53128 you will have to go into the back of the guitar and either add a spring or tighten/loosen the two screws at the end of the hook

  • @TheHaZMaTBand i had to change the spring layout instead of 3 horizontal i had to have the center horizontal, and the two side ones go diagonal into the center to increase the tension on the tem....i got it working great now.

  • @GDragonSword53128 I never thought of that. I got my guitar with 11's on, and I use either 10's or 11's, so never had much of a problem. Glad to hear you got it :D

  • im just wondering what happens next after you pull off the wood block?

will the strings just stretch themselves?

  • exellent vid mate...told be exactly what i needed to know...:D

  • if you change one string at a time the trem wont fall right? does it stay like it did before?

  • haha, guitarded.

  • you guys are awesome! i can't believe i didn't look this up years ago D:

i no longer dread changing my strings on my JS1000 now.

    THANKS

  • steve you realy rock but what care is that if i didnt see it wrong you place strings reverse is it right ? isn it dangerous that the string could pop out form that bridge side ?

  • @gokuussj8 Dude, it doesnt matter with floyds.. Floyd Rose trems dont use the ball end

  • that trem wasn't floating properly

  • @ExtraFeatures True, and thats because he used the block of wood... Change one string at a time

  • The 1st day I got a floating trem I replaced the strings, also changed the thickness, so I had to adjust springs, took about 2 hrs

  • you make this looks TOO EASY. xD

  • i like that idea with threading the string through the tuning posts... does anybody know if you have to cut off the ball ends of the strings on an edge III?

  • wow fast i am going to use this technique when i get my ibanez xiphos

  • is he american australian or english , i actually cant tell

  • would i do this the same way with an edge 3 trem?

  • Steve, you rock!

  • some people say not to take all of at once but you do ? is there a difference ?

  • They only say that because it could warp your neck, but that's only if you leave them off too long. So it's okay to take them all off when you're changing your strings.

  • @meantean well, if u dont have a peace of wood, than changde one by one, so ur floyd dont drom, or hou u say it, if ur string is broken, and ur floyd is down, than it woud be smart to put a peace of wood or something, cheers... :) sorry 4 bad english :)

  • Great vid! this guitar DESERVES a GOTOH!!!!

  • EASY TO DO

  • thanks a lot man... i've also heard that its bad luck to change all the strings at one time with a locking trem... that looked painless though!

  • haha 3:32 to 3:40

    hahahah!!!!

    dude your a leg!

  • you are, it can bow the neck if you do them all at the same time. happened to my s series and it cost like 100 bucks to fix.

  • I thougt you were supposed to do one at a time because the neck is used to constant pressure...?

  • thanks Steve this helped so much!

  • Wow, ive never seen anyone leave the ball ends on like that. Really its a great idea. lol

  • lush guitar man what model is it

  • THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!

I got the same guitar, busted one string, and lost me head. Ready to drive it 20 miles to get a lesson.

    THANK YOU.

  • uhh where do you get the wood?

  • in your pants

  • It looks like one of those things you use to hold pieces in a game of scrabble.

  • it took me the whole day once. and the tremolo was in a wierd position, like i was pressing it down. and i couldnt fix it. ugh

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH.

This is the first time i have restrung my xiphos myself, and i was like "fuck, im going to break something" but now i've seen this it looks so much simpler than i thought it would have been. You are awesome

    THANK YOU AGAIN

  • Steve, thanks dude. This was taking me forever but after watching this....piece of cake. Sungboy, use a wood block just as he does, make sure there's tension on the strings... not too much and the take the block out..fine tune...done!

  • If I take the strings all in the same time, the bridge will lose the set up or not?

  • does anyone knows what is the correct number for the strings for the js100 one person that fix guitars told me that i need it 009-046 because of the trem but i have my doubts please somebody knows teh correct measure?

  • 009-042 not 046, I'm about to do my own js

  • ow oww

  • I've never thought to string like that without clipping off the ball end.

  • australian?

  • you know, i never fixed my strings like that, but this is much easier!

  • Could anyone send me the link to a video showing how to tune a 'Double locking tremolo' video? Or would it just be the same process?

  • wow thanks alot i was planning to get a guitar with a FR, and then every one was like there too much of hasel but wow thanks!

  • i got ibanez rg and is impossible to tune !!!!!!!!

  • Can someone do a video about changing a string on Ibanez? 'Cause I'm having the same issues, I put a new set of strings on my RG 120 and the floating bridge comes like an inch out of the guitar when I tighten the strings, not to mention it only stays in tune for like a minute, I must of done something wrong.

  • i had the same problem with my ibanez but all u do is just tite the springs at the back of the guitar so i dosint move that much !

  • Yeah, that's what I tried, but I was tightening the springs after the strings, if you do it in the other order it actually works pretty well. Thanks.

  • You have to tighten the springs!

  • what gauge is best for drop c on this?

  • 11 or 12 your choice

  • how do yu open it up?

  • Too much dicking around with the camera

  • omg thats amazing lmao just with a block of wood hahaha

  • my guitar teacher has the same guitar as you! :] he got it 21 years ago or something and it still works great!!!! its an amazing guitar

  • I know this may sound trivial but cut the ball ends off. when tuning the strings it can cause a nick or a bur in the tunning peg which after time with grind against the string causing friction between the string and the tunning peg causing the string to break.

  • Floyd Roses suck. somehow my spring tension got uneven and now i cant get it back to where it was. can anyone help me? cuz i wanna play my damien fr again and i totally mis it. please help me? ):

  • i like Steve. He seems cool.

  • You change your strings a really different way than conventional string change. You leave the ball at the post and u use it. Cool

  • tank you thanks thanks

  • lol @ guitarded

  • Dude, thank you.

  • yeah its bullshit. it never works with my guitar- i got an ibanez rg350dx and it fucks up everytime i re-string it. I even insert a piece of wood under the bridge to support it and the bridge keeps dropping and fucks up. Im sick of it and the whole double locking tremolo system can go fuck itself cos ive wasted about 20 sets of strings on it.-so im goin to trade the little fucker for a normal guitar so i can stop wasting money on it and actually be able to play it without the strings snapping

  • you need to know how to tighten your springs and use light strings. do you know nothing? .009 strings (extra)- .42 is what i use, and i get my edge 3 (same thing u have, ive played that one) and it tunes up every time. you go top heavy E then tune bottom light E and B then A then G then D and you should have it in 5 min. lock the tuners when its in range, then use fine tuners in the trem to get it right. plz just learn b4 u buy. these stay in tune for years. (i have an RG370dxgp1.)

  • you dont need the wood shit also. and if you use heavier strings, you need more springs. (reference to earlier comment.) you should've known this b4 you bought.

  • sounds like your playin to hard or put too heavy of gauges on there. i have the same thing i use 8 gauges

  • i have an ibanez edge 3 bridge which is different to this, does anyone know that if i do a similar procedure, would it be the same?

  • same exact

  • Does this method work for the floyd rose special found on the ESP MH-250

  • Yes it's almost the exact same style of bridge.

  • what do you do with the fine tuners

  • when you lock your guitar at the neck then it puts a little stress on the strings, so you can tune down or up with them. OR, in the case that your strings do go out of tune after locking up its usually only a small amount and you can bring it back to normal with the fine tuners or by giving the whammy a hard pull back or forward. :)

  • Yea I just went to tune my Edge3 and got right pissed off, after tuning it (and not paying attention) the trem was actually lifted, I tried to adjust and guess what? broken string. These guitars are hell to re-string for the first time especially when used to stringing fenders, BC Rich.

  • ah great now I have to by a new set of strings again!! but that really helps. thanks!

  • can u do this with all whammys?

  • Well, there are different kinds of tremolos, but as long it's a Floyd Rose'ish system, yes, this is the way to do it.

This is not the method to use for stratocasters for instance, as it's the normal string-changing way.. But i suppose you know that.

  • haha yeah! i got a jackson dinky with a whammy it looks pretty much like a floyd rose but it says jackson on it thats all!

  • Well as long as it looks and works like a floyd rose. The reason i said Floyd Rose'ISH is, that there are many different kinds of licensed floyd rose systems. Some of them are okay, for instance Edge Pro by Ibanez, but not all of them are as good as the original Floyd Rose system.

  • it is a floyd rose, it's just a licensed not an original

  • Do you stretch the strings also? I did enjoy video alot, made alot of sense and does this work for the edge III termolo too? instead of cutting the strings to the certain length why not just roll a lot of of the string in to the tuning nob so when you do break one you jusy unwind it, so you odnt have to buy a whole new set, thanks if you answer my questions.

  • When you break a string, the whole set is probably some months old, so why not just change them all?

  • This is pretty helpful, but that camera guy SUCKS! I can't see anything this man's doing. I wish the view was better on the action, I can't tell what he's doing until he explains it. Even then, it's guesswork because the cameraman is off a bunch...

  • I was always told to never take all the strings off at once because the action will get all messed up. can you do one string at a time? Also, is changing strings on an ibanez tremolo the same as a regular floyd rose?

  • Change it once at a time.

  • i like 10 to 46 but i had to buy 9 to 42s:(

  • im a retard i bought the wrong gauge strings :D great vid
