Lol. Shit. I love my Trek, but some of the comments I've seen on a random video are crazy. It is just a TV show folks. A mostly brilliant show, but still, just a show!!!!
I always wanted to see an episode where the Dominion attacked a Gorn ship. During this time period they're friendly towards the Federation. Would have been epic...
Those two galaxy class start starships at about 6:16 has got to be one of the best moments in this battle for me, really gives you an impression of their massive scale.
@MutantHippie Yup, the Galaxy wing, manuever designed to flank the strike group and create protection for them. I bet you they got destroyed. Great sacrifice though.
@IronLantern Because the Enterprise wasn't necessary in the plot of this episode and the producers didn't want to have to pay the salaries for two ST crews ;)
Cannon to right of them, Cannon to left of them, Cannon behind them Volley'd and thunder'd; Storm'd at with shot and shell, While horse and hero fell, They that had fought so well Came thro' the jaws of Death Back from the mouth of Hell, All that was left of them, Left of six hundred.
@TimTheEnchanted Since the writers of these episodes could have found a way to establish that properly (I.E. Have Admiral Ross point that out) I'm going to assume the more likely explanation- The writers weren't paying attention in revisions.
But I agree it does seem likely the Cardassians would have different military units. Not that I need that spoonfed, but it could have been established in some way. it just doesn't seem like they were doing it on purpose.
@thakillman7 My guess is they figured engaging at point blank there was better than trying to fight both captured DS9 and the enemy fleet simultaneously.
Ah you do know right that the ships can battle at warp speeds yet are far more vulnerable? Hence why they come out of warp speed since they can fight more effectively and survive. Plus there are hazards in space, plus travel time to consider due to speed of the ships. Hence why you have strategic points and bases.
@Electricfox Makes you think why we worried so much over the years. Just think of how some of the original series episodes could have went. Spock - "A Klingon bird of prey is attacking." Kirk - " Don't worry they can shoot for shit. "
@mentalrectangle In terms of total firepower maybe but the majority of the Defiants firepower was intensely focused into short bursts in a forward arc so it could punch through enemy shields and hull in a few shots and a couple of volleys from its cannons is equivalent to the output of all a Galaxy class phaser arrays.
@Jaybeefromhiscastle From the novle Vendetta Picard, Kirk discuss the need for the defiant class warship to fight the Borg and if memory serves me rite, the design can send out a massive EM Pulse that can temporarily knock out the connection to the Borg Collective.
@67irishfire Novels aren't canon, I'm afraid, unless they were written by Berman, Braga, Paramount (or anyone else legally authorised to continue the franchise (in either written or televisual form).
@Jaybeefromhiscastle As far as I know anything written or televised (licensed) by Roddenberry or any legal affiliation deemed so according to studio and print is perfectly legal, not to be misconstrued by fans or there opinions.

@centurion205 And those lines are a quote of the poem "The Charge of the Light Brigade" by Tennyson.
The Poem is about an incident in the Crimean War in 1854 when the light brigade due to vague and misunderstood orders made a charge at enemy artillery and suffered heavy casualties.
@Austindude3954 no ships ever have their shields on line in big battles like this. just look at the enterprise in STVI. shields are supposed to be up, but every shot from the klingons blows something up. explosions are better for the ratings than glowing shields
@eagle628 Shields only work to a certain level. Its like kevlar vests, it will deflect the majority of the force but some of the impact will still show through underneath. At least, thats my thoughts on it.
I would have paid good money to see this sort of action in a ST film - The nearest we got was the task force battling the Borg cube in First Contact. There's a few moments that put the hairs on the back of my neck on end, but the bit when the big guns of 'Galaxy wings 9-1 & 9-3' join the battle at 6:02 was and still is mighty.
Oh in case you don't know, the '600' poem is 'The Charge of the Light Brigade' by Tennyson, written in 1854.
That was a damn risky play by Sisko - I'd have gone after Earth instead, after I'd taken it, morale throughout the Federation would likely have collapsed (as we humans are the heart of it) and the alliance therefore also finished.
@Jaybeefromhiscastle Likewise, if I were Sisko, I would've just pulled everything back to Earth - all the fleets, Klingons, Romulans, everybody - and waited for the Dominion to show up and get their asses kicked. Of course, no one could've known the Prophets would intervene, and that's basically what won the war.
I asked my dad about the ending to this episode. People will believe that it was a deus ex machina cop-out but truth is, that scene was meant to show how much the Prophets trusted Sisko. Sisko had apparently done a number of things for the Prophets and he basically said to them "Put your money where your mouth is and destroy that fleet!"

Also, when I was reading about the aftermath, apparently it wasn't without a cost.
@Fironkkuify Nope. His destiny took a different path, straight to the Fire Caves on Bajor, after the Prophets' intervention in"Sacrifice Of Angels" caused the Pah'Wraiths to choose Gul Dukat as their emissary..
THere copla reason Defiant was flag ship 1 It the ship Sisko commands and since hes the fleet commander it would be the flag ship. 2 The Defiant is war ship built-ed for war. the Galaxy class look big and impressive but lake firepower. they were made more for exploring not a war. Most Fed ship are built more of exploring and peace then war .

@Jaybeefromhiscastle As long as it doesn't distract you from driving, it's all good...myself, if I had a nickel for every time a cell-phone blabber almost clipped me in traffic, I'd have more money than the Sultan of Brunei by now.
can you imagine if DS9 didn't have the wormhole? even a few months of peace meant the cardassian/dominon alliance were already far more powerful - purely through militray and economical growth...good job the prophets quite liked sisko or it would've been GG for Sisko...
Nice battle, but one question: Where the hell was the USS Enterprise-D (or E)? I doubt the Cardassians would be able to hold up against the main ship of the entire Star Trek canon ("Data, activate the Plot Shields and fire Photon Torpedos!" =P)
@KingofStrawberries Yeah, the E was supposedly elsewhere (big war and all that). They did plan to have the TNG cast for Worf/Dax's wedding in the next episode, but they couldn't get the whole cast in because of schedule clashes.
Thank you so much for uploading this without adding the Requiem theme and taking out all the FX and dialog. You sir, are a saint. Could have used a cheesy Windows Movie Maker "and so it begins" title card ....
I'm SURE that the Captains of the Galaxy Class ships included in Galaxy Wings 9-1 and 9-3 would have loved to have heard "Have Galaxy Wings 9-1, 9-2 and 9-3 engage those Galor Class destroyers, as opposed to hearing "Have Galaxy Wings 9-1 and 9-2 engage those Galor Classs destroyers," Will? Trying to hold a gap open against 1,254 ships? I'm sure those Captains would have loved to have had a Galaxy Wing 9-2, don't you think, Will? William?
It may have been a nice thing to have a Galaxy Wing 9-2, or 9-5, whatever the designation may have been, available in a situation like this, had Riker not crashed the 1701-D ride?
Maybe they could have actually prevented the dismantling of the minefield and maybe Captain Sisko wouldn't have had to piss off the wormhole freakshows who did stop the Dominion reinforcements from entering the Alpha Quadrant, but also having to warn Sisko that a penance will be exacted? Nice work, Riker. Way to not pay attention to Maxwell positioning the Phoenix outside of Cardassian weapons range while you were even on the bridge.
@Dreamweaver200786 Likely because the weapons are phase-matched to the shield modulation--reference "Generations" the movie on how the Enterprise D was destroyed.
The name "Flagship" doesn't necessarily mean that it's the biggest, best, or baddest, only that its the lead ship, not necessarily the highest ranked officer aboard, but the one that knows the battle they're all going into. Since Sisko knows the enemy, territory, DS9, and the worm hole, he's the natural leader for this mission.
All Federation ships should get within close proximity of eachother and combine all sheilds to create a 'Bubble effect' [like they did when they 1st moved DS9 to the wormhole] and on Siskos mark go to warp 9 direct in to the path of the enemy. I know it is a high risk suicide mission, but more than 1 ship would make it through.
Cannon to the right of them, Cannon to the of them, Cannon in front of them Volley'd and thunder'd; Storm'd at with shot and shell, Boldly they rode and well, Into the jaws of Death, Into the mouth of hell Rode the six hundred..... 3rd stanza of the poem called The Charge Of The Light Brigde by Alfred Tennyson.
*Sigh* If V'ger hadn't transcended before he left and gave all of the technology he accumulated from his voyage, the Federation wouldn't be dealing shit like this...
@Referee001uk because the flagship of the fleet is the ship where the commander of the fleet is. And i assume Sisko had some leeway in chosing which ship he wanted to be on.
@omegastar19 : It's because the Defiant is the most advanced ship in Starfleets arsenal, with the commander of DS9 aboard. I'm pretty sure the UFP could afford to send an admiral to take command of the fleet, it isn't like they do much other than shout and die.
@omegastar19 I know i seem very sad to know this as I am a hardcore trekkie lol but the reason why sisko is in charge of the fleet is because in tactical situations involving more than one ship, command falls to the captain of the ship with the greatest tactical and firepower advantage... hence the only warship in starfleet the defiant ( if your wondering were i got this from, ST Voy, Equinox part 1)
@williamskidfears firstly I made that comment 6 months ago, second it wasnt a question it was a reply to another youtubers comment.Thirdly Is your penis that small and you have such an asshole personality to just insult a random person on youtube?, oh btw fuck you fool... , now go fuck your dog, stop adding stupid aggravating comments on Youtube and be happy.
@ed291 Wow, such venom over such a simple comment. Last I remembered, I still had freedom of expression, and I ain't afraid to use it, bin Laden. So why don't you go fuck off and die and make everyone's day, you miserable, self-hating faggot.
I think I've seen people saying that the interference of the Prophets was just a massive deus ex machina cop-out.
I think the writers may have been paying homage to the greatest cop-out that occurred 800 years ago: the Kamikaze, where 4,000 ships bearing 140,000 Mongols were swept away by a typhoon off the coast of Japan. That's probably the best allusion.
The best defense is indeed an attack, though the Dominion and the Cardies got off the first shots. The outnumbered Federation's fleet's tit for tat success shows strength, especially in numbers, doesn't always work. The Feds were holding their own, then the Klingons showed up to close the numbers gap. I missed most of the Dominion War on TV. The weapons fire being exchanged back and forth is good special effects.
I've always thought of Voyager a Deep Space Vessal. Maybe thats just me i dunno. The equinox i know for sure is a Deep space science vessal and Voyager is one class up from it so i just thought it was a science ship too.. Im probably wrong tho
What the hell kind of a Klingon is Gowron anyway? He orders his fleet to NOT fight in the most decisive battle in the entire war up until that point?! Not only is that dishonourable, its stupid.
@edinscot56789 I've thought about that and maybe he was still a bit upset about the initial encounter with the Federation at DS9? "I do not intend to hand victory to the Dominion. But let your people know the Klingon Empire will remember what has happened here. You have sided against us in battle. And this we do not forgive...or forget."
@GamingLeeLee because hes a traitor to the cardassians, who will shoot him on sight, he himself hates them for exiling him and as an ex-spy, he knows an awfull lot of stuff about the cardassians, and the federation could certainly use that knowledge as theyre fighting against cardassians.
@omegastar19 oh right...makes sense I suppose....its still seems odd that they'd put that man (given his past) in charge of a console aboard the flagship of a major fleet action :S but oh well, he is totally awesome :D
The debate over the shields not being used should be resolved with the knowledge that both sides must commit almost all the ships' reserve energy to increase the strength of their weapons respectively. It is a good rationalisation to the fact that to keep making shield bubbles around ALL those ships would be cost-prohibitive for the special effects team to do for each episode-hence the constant stock footage.
The missing shields is because the bubble/shell effect was too expensive to put on all those ships, so the effects guys gave them "skin-tight" shield effects.
@zechreich I dont think they were made in very large numbers at that point in the star trek timeline (though it could just have been a massive oversight), voyager the 1st of the class was launched a few years before wasnt it? so thats not long to build a lot of em when ya in peace time an when the war broke out I cant see the feds considering the class a priority to build in large numbers and the sovereign certainly wouldnt be in large numbers by that point (yes I'm a massive nerd lol)
@zechreich I was wondering about that too... but apparently the producers wanted to save the Sovereign class for the big screen and not "waste" the design on TV... and according to the information on Star Trek Voyager only four Intrepid class vessels had been built by the time Voyager got lost in the Delta Quadrant, so there shouldn't be a lot of them around... the Intrepid class USS Bellerophon later appears on DS9 in one episode though.
from watching all the other star trek single battle from ship to ship that is spactatualy over played to me you'll only think the federation had a max of 20 starships..ds9 ish deh pwnage!

Nice battle, but one question: Where the hell was the USS Enterprise-D (or E)? I doubt the Cardassians would be able to hold up against the main ship of the entire Star Trek canon ("Data, activate the Plot Shields and fire Photon Torpedos!" =P)
KingofStrawberries 1 year ago
@KingofStrawberries Yeah, the E was supposedly elsewhere (big war and all that). They did plan to have the TNG cast for Worf/Dax's wedding in the next episode, but they couldn't get the whole cast in because of schedule clashes.

William?
brianwesley28 1 year ago
It may have been a nice thing to have a Galaxy Wing 9-2, or 9-5, whatever the designation may have been, available in a situation like this, had Riker not crashed the 1701-D ride?
brianwesley28 1 year ago
@brianwesley28

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of Hell Rode the six hundred.

why can they destory each other with just 2-3 shots? where are their shields???
Dreamweaver200786 1 year ago
@Dreamweaver200786
Their shields were probably hammered to death from all the off-screen fire. Besides, those are Miranda class. They're practically ancient.
VidGamer123 1 year ago
@Dreamweaver200786 Likely because the weapons are phase-matched to the shield modulation--reference "Generations" the movie on how the Enterprise D was destroyed.

Austindude3954 1 year ago
The name "Flagship" doesn't necessarily mean that it's the biggest, best, or baddest, only that its the lead ship, not necessarily the highest ranked officer aboard, but the one that knows the battle they're all going into. Since Sisko knows the enemy, territory, DS9, and the worm hole, he's the natural leader for this mission.

Shattered and sundered.

The USS Enterprise is tha flagship of the fleet. In this battle the Defiant is the command vessel, because Sisko is the fleet commander/coordinator.
logibare 1 year ago
All Federation ships should get within close proximity of eachother and combine all sheilds to create a 'Bubble effect' [like they did when they 1st moved DS9 to the wormhole] and on Siskos mark go to warp 9 direct in to the path of the enemy. I know it is a high risk suicide mission, but more than 1 ship would make it through.

one thing bugging me is why is the USS Defiant the flagship of the fleet?
Referee001uk 1 year ago
@Referee001uk because the flagship of the fleet is the ship where the commander of the fleet is. And i assume Sisko had some leeway in chosing which ship he wanted to be on.
omegastar19 1 year ago 9
@omegastar19 : It's because the Defiant is the most advanced ship in Starfleets arsenal, with the commander of DS9 aboard. I'm pretty sure the UFP could afford to send an admiral to take command of the fleet, it isn't like they do much other than shout and die.
darley05 1 year ago
@omegastar19 I know i seem very sad to know this as I am a hardcore trekkie lol but the reason why sisko is in charge of the fleet is because in tactical situations involving more than one ship, command falls to the captain of the ship with the greatest tactical and firepower advantage... hence the only warship in starfleet the defiant ( if your wondering were i got this from, ST Voy, Equinox part 1)
ed291 1 year ago
@ed291 The Defiant and Avery Brooks were both the stars of the show, that's why the Defiant was the flagship. Any more bloody silly questions?

I think I've seen people saying that the interference of the Prophets was just a massive deus ex machina cop-out.
I think the writers may have been paying homage to the greatest cop-out that occurred 800 years ago: the Kamikaze, where 4,000 ships bearing 140,000 Mongols were swept away by a typhoon off the coast of Japan. That's probably the best allusion.

There's an old saying, "fortune favours the bold".
"Cannon to the right of them, cannon to the left of them, cannon in front of them, volley'd and thunder'd".
Seattlecarnut 1 year ago
The best defense is indeed an attack, though the Dominion and the Cardies got off the first shots. The outnumbered Federation's fleet's tit for tat success shows strength, especially in numbers, doesn't always work. The Feds were holding their own, then the Klingons showed up to close the numbers gap. I missed most of the Dominion War on TV. The weapons fire being exchanged back and forth is good special effects.

What the hell kind of a Klingon is Gowron anyway? He orders his fleet to NOT fight in the most decisive battle in the entire war up until that point?! Not only is that dishonourable, its stupid.

@FekLeyrTarg Just before he dies....ooops.
williamskidfears 10 months ago
@edinscot56789 I've thought about that and maybe he was still a bit upset about the initial encounter with the Federation at DS9? "I do not intend to hand victory to the Dominion. But let your people know the Klingon Empire will remember what has happened here. You have sided against us in battle. And this we do not forgive...or forget."
brianwesley28 3 months ago
actually,...now I missed most of this series but why is garak maning one of the consoles? ...
GamingLeeLee 1 year ago
@GamingLeeLee because hes a traitor to the cardassians, who will shoot him on sight, he himself hates them for exiling him and as an ex-spy, he knows an awfull lot of stuff about the cardassians, and the federation could certainly use that knowledge as theyre fighting against cardassians.
omegastar19 1 year ago 2
@omegastar19 oh right...makes sense I suppose....its still seems odd that they'd put that man (given his past) in charge of a console aboard the flagship of a major fleet action :S but oh well, he is totally awesome :D

@omegastar19 He left DS9 with the Federation members and Sisko decided to put a man w/Garak's experience to good use.

KJOSCOT 1 year ago
The missing shields is because the bubble/shell effect was too expensive to put on all those ships, so the effects guys gave them "skin-tight" shield effects.
I read it in a star trek magazine years ago.
countjobula 1 year ago
where is sovereign and inteprid class vessel?
zechreich 1 year ago
@zechreich I dont think they were made in very large numbers at that point in the star trek timeline (though it could just have been a massive oversight), voyager the 1st of the class was launched a few years before wasnt it? so thats not long to build a lot of em when ya in peace time an when the war broke out I cant see the feds considering the class a priority to build in large numbers and the sovereign certainly wouldnt be in large numbers by that point (yes I'm a massive nerd lol)
GamingLeeLee 1 year ago
@zechreich I was wondering about that too... but apparently the producers wanted to save the Sovereign class for the big screen and not "waste" the design on TV... and according to the information on Star Trek Voyager only four Intrepid class vessels had been built by the time Voyager got lost in the Delta Quadrant, so there shouldn't be a lot of them around... the Intrepid class USS Bellerophon later appears on DS9 in one episode though.
sunlightguy75 1 year ago
Shields only take so much abuse before they collapse. When you've got dozens of ships pounding on each other eventually damage will be done.
