Contrary to what another commenter suggested, the reality is not that the robber would have shot them both. The reality is that Denny would have shot the robber center mass with at least three rounds, and the wounds would have been fatal.

The artistic license is in the idea that it is safe or practical to take a disarming shot. Of course, if he killed the robber, it would have been purely dramatic, not funny.
