Serge Gainsbourg is envious because he is not even 1/10 the singer that Houston is. He did not even have the courage to speak directly to her. At least he knew his place. Maybe he wrote some okay songs and knew how to get media attention within France, but he could not sing to save his life. He is nobody outside of France.

And as for "speaking directly to her", well, he was going via a translator/the host because his English isn't so good.

And he is DEFINITELY someone outside of France, he's world-renowned and probably made a bigger impact on the music world than Whitney did, in all fairness.
