I agree that he sounds different than most of his material. I've always thought he sounded sick on this song. Notice beginning at 2:10 you can really hear the throatiness in his voice. Knowing matts health record thats not entirely impossible. At that point in his career he probably couldn't be choosy on his recording times. Let me know your thoughts or opinions.
