Magical days they were indeed. The shows at the Palomino in North Hollywood were the pinacle for me. Prime early Dream Syndicate. After Kendra left it wasn't the same. I wish I had a time machine...
Greetings from Brazil everybody! Dream Syndicate came to me in the early 80's through surf promo videos and surfer friends (the ones as I used to be...). Then, later, I realize the connection with Velvet Undergorund references and other stuffs I enjoyed. Simple the best! I love The Dream Syndicate. And Still Holding On To You (except from the "official" version in Out of Grey - the worst version I heard of teh song ' till now) is one of my top favourite songs ever.
Kendra Smith and Karl Precoda were the heart and soul of The Dream Syndicate. Steve Wynn carried on without them, but these early days were magical...
It was a simple question with no emotion attached. I asked a question out of curiosity -- hardly a reason to suggest that someone chill. The bands lumped under the Paisley Underground banner didn't even all have the same feel to them -- even the name was originally a joke that stuck.
For God's sake, WOW! What an incredibly charismatic group. I remember getting their albums, and it made me a happy teenager! I feel sorry for those who missed them, so melodic.
Wow, it had been so long since I thought of them, then I heard them on Sirius. Outstanding! As for the prof not wanting to re-visit, well, life is short, embrace the best of the past. Cheers!
Why would you include REM as a Paisley Underground band? They're from Athens. Dream Syndicate, The Three O'Clock, The Bangles, etc. were part of a very localized scene.
I can see the shared psychedelia and proto punk roots, but a couple thousand miles goes a long way towards keeping them apart.
Geography doesn't come into it....REM and the Paisley Underground came out at same time....similar vibe and sound, and anyhow, Athens or LA, it's all a long way from England, where I saw them all come over at similar time....hence the connection as far as we Brits are concerned.....chill.....!
agreed, plus PU wasn't really a sound but more of a scene, a lot of the bands had different sounds. I mean you could lump half the indie bands from the 80's into Paisley Underground if you were going with sound alone.
hgfan33 - That concert was in NY - I remember it well. It was listed in a newspaper in a very small ad near the bottom. I went for the Dream Syndicate even though I liked REM's earlier stuff. Sometimes I think that Stipe takes himself a bit too seriously
I remember seeing them at Klub Foot in Hammersmith, London in around 1984 (2nd or 3rd visit to the UK?). Phenomenal gig as far as I'm concerned. Around 1130 pm, the venue manager switched off the stage lights and switched on the regular house lighting but the band carried on rocking, the crowd moshing. Then a few mins later, the venue manager switched off the amps, but still the band played and the crowd moshed for a good 10minutes more. Absolutely electric atmosphere. Best ever gig perhaps.
I used to go see this band all the time in L.A. back in the 80's - totally mesmerizing!! I knew Karl - he used to hang out at the art gallery where I worked...
I see now precoda was really a genius man and these guys were really nice people. too bad precoda didnt play for the gun club, they would have been like the beatles.
i saw them open up for REM in 1983 or 4, i think (can't remember). I went to the concert to see REM, but the Dream Syndicate made the biggest impression (Stipe pouted when someone threw a towel at him, sulked and sang behind the drum kit the final twenty minutes of the show). Dream Syndicate were a great band.
Curt Bush? Rainbohead? Metal Machine Flake? Whoscar Do? Yeah kid, I've heard of those bands and even own some of their finery. This one band here still sets the paces riding out in front of a thousand faces. I've seen and heard some stuff in my kip and you can take it or leave it. You, my young and wide eyed friend, have chosen to leave it which is fine by me.
This is the most important performance of 'Rock Music' in the Post Modern age. Really... This is the last real music made be real people, kids. He's at least 10 years older than I am yet at the time when I saw this on television when it was originally aired, I was transfixed and transformed. Yup. Visit your oracle.
That's a rather limited view. I wouldn't blame you for turning off your radio, but to assume since you didn't make the effort to seek out new music, does not in any way make your statement hold water. I'm not even sure what you mean by real music by real people. What was Husker Du, the Meatpuppets, Fishbone, Metal Flake Mother, Kate Bush, and Radiohead then?
Used to see them at small clubs around LA in the early 80's and they were awesome! Saw them a few times in the San Francisco area, too. One of my fave bands EVER! Definitely at the top of my list for a dream reunion.
I saw this wonderful band with The Psychedelic Furs at the Santa Monica Civic in 1982. What a great show. I feel pretty luck to have seen them with Kendra on bass. Was anyone else at that show ???
One of my fave early 80's bands. Saw them with Karl and later as well with Paul Cutler. I didn't like anyting after the EP and Days of Wine and Roses, but those two recordings are more than enough for me.
The original Zeds, I think I spent my entire teenage net worth that that place(There and Vinyl Fetish in Hollywood). The latter locale didn't tickle my fancy as much.

It sounds like they listened an awful lot to the Velvelt underground with Nico; particularly the song "heroin."
It's really brilliant, the way they did this track; and the way sound as a band.

Of all the 'Paisley Underground' bands of that era, early REM included, these were THE best.....Loved 'em.

DS could even be the best band of the 80s! I think they were more influental to many people growing up in the 80s and forming bands than REM was.
