How often do u cowash your hair? Thanks for responding to the last question. You got me interested in this method and I have already started on that journey as from yesterday.
@MahoganyCurls so how do you hydrate your hair between washes and do you use cnditioner in between washes. I am so sorry for asking all these questions and I really appreciate your help.
@MyMakeuplooks No, I do not..I usually redo my hair mon, wed, and fridays. It is okay. So when I redo my hair, that is when it gets "rehydrated". HTH! :)
@MyMakeuplooks -I think henna is CG safe, you may have to research it. Try going to naturallycurly(dot)com and type in henna and cg method. It should pull up some threads for you. HTH!
I've viewed your vids over and over again (I just found you a couple of days ago) and just placed an order for Devacurl. Whew! I've been trying to wear my natural curls (minus the chaos) for nearly 15 years and you've helped tremendously. My hair type is just like yours YES with the two curl patterns and all...so I'm going to trust your judgement on this one. Thanks for sharing your story!! I've never had a relaxer..thanks to my mom.. so I didn't have to transition :-) #Love my natural
Thanks for your reply, your hair is BEAUTIFUL! I've been following your hair care regimen and it's made a HUGE difference in the moisture level in my hair. I love the shape of your hair. My hair is currently more of a blunt cut (one length) and I would like to cut it in layers. Did you cut your hair in its current shape yourself or did you get it professionally shaped? I can't imagine how long it will take me to do it myself...lol.
@NubiannQnCurly - About 45 minutes to an hour. I do not cut every single curl on my head, that would take forever..lol, I just grab a strand and snip (If I feel the strand needs a little oxygenation). The back is pretty long, so I just bring that hair towards the front. :D
@gibel13 -hi! You can cowash as much as you like with the CG method. Shampoo is not apart of the curly girl method. Conditioner washing only, or low poo. Sulfate shampoos do not have to be used. I suggest visiting naturallycurly(dot)com, to learn more about this method or my Facebook fan page (mahoganycurls) for details...I hope this helps :)
I feel very discouraged about the cg method..I've been doing it for 2-3 weeks now and i've been experimenting with different conditioners to find one that works for me. I guess the only one that works well for me is the whole foods 365 brand. but last night i slept with tresemme naturals overnight and now my hair is horribly dry and i am really sad. dont know what to do. can anyone help me?
Thanks for your reply, i will try the gel you suggested. i'm just starting the CG method ( day 1 for me) but had to clarify as i did have build up. Your hair is stunning. thanks for sharing what you have learnt :)
@vibranta -I have tried it in the past and the eco styler gel plus the conditioner caused white buildup...eco styler gel is tricky. Herbal Essences Set Me Up gel, mixes pretty good with tresemme. :)
I luv luv luv ur hair! I have super curly hair crush on ur it LoL....I'm definately trying to achieve ur look and ur so right about having patience. I'll be 1 year natural in March and I am proud of how far my hair has come as far as length & texture, but I'm still struggling with retaining moisture. I luv big hair, can't wait to get to that point and I just wanted to say that ur videos have been very helpful & motivating! :) Thank you!!
@2cvest -I do get knots, but I do not cut them unless they are driving me nuts or if the detangling process become difficult. I just ignore them...i have tried to prevent them, but they still show up regardless.
Other than the DevaCurl Product line, what are some less expensive brand alternatives that can be used for the CG method? I really want to do the CG method, but still not get too high cost. Please help. Thanks!
Your hair is beautiful. I'm using Deva Curl product because I got my BC at Devachan and liked how the products worked on my hair. Angell is a really good gel, haven't tried Arc Angel (but I have it). Can't do Ecostyler but I may try your HE recommendation. Thank you!
can u clear up some confusion i have b/c im hearing 2 different things in this video & im not sure what to do with the information. doesnt herbal essences (i use hello hydration) have silicones in it? i noticed in your old videos that you used it for your wash & go's. so do u use silicones or not? or just sometimes? and by saying to not use shampoo do u mean ALL shampoos or just ones with sulfates? and finally, as for gels, doesnt the Eco Styler seal the cuticle and not let moisture in? thanks!
@Caryss81 -sure, yes HE does...at the time I made those videos, I thought the silicones were water soluable (in the Hello Hydration and Totally Twisted), after doing some more research I found that they are not... :( Luckily, I do not use that product anymore, I only use the HE set me up gel. I do NOT shampoo...not even sulfate free...I cowash only, I use Devacurl No Poo. I am not sure about ECO styler sealing the moisture, I never heard that before...thanks and I hope that helps!
@chatamoment02 -it may, but it also may be a little difficult. If you are still wearing it in straight styles (wraps, etc) bc that requires heat protectants which contains, silicones..I think FHI hot sauce is silicone free though...it wouldnt hurt to try :)
@Fosmoore -not sure, I have heard some ladies say this happen...Naturallycurly(dot)com have a few threads on this... I never noticed this when I started.
i've tried the the Devacurl products because of Mahoganycurls, Rachaelcpr, Latia4u, MsNaturalTouch and TheBadpusycat.....i have to HONESTLY say you girls should be getting PAID by the OWNER because you've convinced a lot of people to buy the product and y'all hair looks better than the advertisers and the people that's on "BeautyTV"
hi. well i'm about to do my big chop at the end of this month and i plan on doing the curly girl method. I was wondering if you feel like or you noticed that doing the CG method changed or tightened your curl pattern?
I ran out to get the book from the library. I had tried the tightly curly method but felt that i could not find a heavy enough conditioner but after watching your video I realize that I have to give it more time. Wish me luck, your hair looks great by the way!
Hi, thanks do much for your videos!!! I started this weekend with no gel and condition styling.. in The Netherlands I cannot find deva, do you know the Mixed Chicks product? just trying ho vind a nice leave in conditioner..
I was using devacurl one condition to go wash n go then apply kinky curly, but now I get the same moisture with giovanni. I rinse it out. Have you ever used the curly girl method with Giovanni? I am going to try the method with devacurl.
Mmm..I really don't think hair should be that difficult..like, the products seem 'tricky' and if you have to use a product a certain way just to make it work the way it supposed to then...is it worth that??? lool
Hey I'm so glad to see you back. After watching one of your last videos I went and bough the book however I dont like how my hair looks with the scrunching method with just conditioner. I think its because I am in the awkward in between stage are you gonna post any of your old videos from this stage?
Have you tried One Hair? It's at Sally's $11.99 reg. price and is similar to Wen and No Poo. It's my alternative to the price and it works great. It was on sale for $9.99 and I purchased extra. I purchased the book and Heaven in Hair today. I'll give it a try. Thanks for the simplicity.
Welcome back...!!! I was hoping that you would come back...lol
I wanted to know if you use anything to keep your scalp moisturized...??? So im almost 2 years natural and this winter my scalp has gotten really flaky and i wanted to know what you think i should do...???
GREAT Video!!!...where did u get the large jar of heaven in hair?...they only had the small at ulta and that one was $30!..ive been using deva only for 2 days now, and u made a good point about clarifyin b4 starting..i dont think i cleansed my hair enough as I have that waxy film feelin, but my curls look GREAT!!!..so I am definitely going to stick with the CG method at least till the end of the year and see how it goes~!.. Happy HOlidays to you!
@watchfuleye2008 You can get thes on ave you and its 39.95 however they are going to have a flash sale on November 22 and will be offering 40% off orders plus 1.00 shipping for orders that reach 50 before discount.
That Deva Curl Heaven in Hair as a leave in/styler is the bomb! I started using it this summer...straight out of the shower, no other product. My hair was so soft and fluffy!
I heard from another YTer that using gel helps with shrinkage, and I did that last night and it did help. I used EcoStyler on top of Giovanni 50:50 balancing conditioner which I've been using as my conditioner of choice since trying out the CG method. I didn't make my hair white once it was dry. But I'm not able to pineapple at night because of shrinkage. The next morning there's even more shrinkage and "smushage". I need to figure out how to keep the curls stretched.
@ItsMeMonchhichi Ive found that same issue..i get massive shrinkage, I spritz my hair with a refresher to reactivate my curls and 'unsmush' them then ive been using double prong hair clips and I strategically place them on the ends of my hair in the back and a few on eachside to elongate my hair while its drying...once i remove the clips my hair is more stretched...hope this may help you!
@watchfuleye2008 Thanks for the tip! I'm actually going to try doing the wash-n-go in the evening when I get home from the gym because that's when I shower usually. That gives me time to have it stretched while drying instead of that 30 minutes I have before heading to work in the morning. I can sleep with a plastic cap on to keep it moist, then in the morning just apply conditioner & gel and roll out - hopefully. I'm going to try it tonight and see what happens.
can you do a video talking about the tresemme naturals conditioner you use as well please or send me a detailed message about it? I'm a college student so i really can't afford devacurl products right now
@MahoganyCurls Can you send me the same message about the Tresemme naturals if you still have it? I'm in high school so I can't afford the DevaCurl either but I really want to experiment with CG.
Your hair looks so amazing! You have me wanting to revisit the CG method as well. I think I will wait until Summer 2012 though bcuz right now I have so many other things going on in my life right now being pregnant and other stuff as well. But glad to see you back and glad that you have had such great success and amazing results :)
thank you for your videos, as i have recently decided to try the CG and Conditioner Only (Tightly Curly) methods at the same time. I just happened to have recently received some Deva Curl products from a friend (No Poo, One Condition and Angell), they definitely have a learning curve, for the first 10 days, the One Condition has just felt so waxy and gunky, but got some good results for the 1st time yesterday, still no 2nd day hair though. Good luck with the studies!!
Your hair is GORGEOUS!!It's so distracting lol I was really listening to you for advice and my eyes kept being drawn to it! You are such a great example and role model for how to really take care of your natural hair!!I admire your journey : )
Thank you for info...I am trying the CG method and I already like it. I think you do a pretty good job explaining it so that I finally know what it's all about! I have been transitioning now for over a year and was having problems with dryness, but I think this is actually going to work for me! I am very excited and watch your videos over and over again! Keep up the good work!
@SQUiRT20101- my was n gos are not really "wash" in gos. Just re applying my conditioner, wetting my hair and detangling. I cowash when needed or 1x a month. The water cleans my scalp bc I use silicone free products do it rinses out. Therefore there isn't a need for me to cowash daily. Does that make sense?
can you explan your difference between co-washing and wash-n-goes....because to me it seems like the same thing expect you not rising out the conditioner?? but what do "you" mean by you co-wah once a month and wash-an go every other day??
Thank you so much! I hope that works! I was getting discouraged with my protective styles and te tension its been putting on my hair so seeing your vids method is gonna save my hair hopefully. Thanks again and good luck with school!
Your hair is amazing and thx for all your info! After 2.5 yrs protective styling is no longer suitable for me. I've had tons of pp shedding after my son's birth and my edges have been thin for months. I plan on buying the CG book soon but I've been using your method for a few days and my hair gets really frizzy on top. I've been using Tresemme Naturals. Why do you think that is? Does the book say anything about this or is my hair trying to get used to the new method?
@loveandtangles - thank you so much! It could be that you are new to the method and your hair is trying to adjust. Sometimes I will add more conditoner to my frizzy areas and that usually helps. Remember that touching can cause frizz too...maybe after a week or so it will get better. But try smoothing the frizzy part with conditioner and your fingers to lay down the cuticle. I hope this makes sense. (pretend your finger is a flat iron and run it down the wet hair with your fingers). :)
I've read both of Lorraine Massey's books. I really think they are great stepping stones for people to learn about curly hair in general. The section on "black hair" didn't work for me. According to her book I have Corkicelli curls. I follow that method with the conditioner and soft hold gel. I've done the CG method for 2 years and I absolutely love it. My hair is so soft and silky. I still can't get over how amazing my hair is but I don't use the Devachan line. I use Tresemme Naturals.
@MrsSarahWalz -that is awesome!!!!! I know! i feel the same way. I do not follow everything the book states about the corkscrew and fractal curls...like scrunching and using the gel...i am so happy to hear that. I love my tresemme naturals too! That is why I stick with this method, it works for me...i have tried "experimenting" with cones and it was always a major failure...it didnt work for me. I am happy with my decision. Thank you for your input!
I thnk im a lttle spoiled with all these uploads this week, lol!!! Im so glad your back. I ordered the curly book and can't wait for it to get hear :)
do you get fairy knots? how do you prevent them? i just wondered b/c that is the reason I stopped wash n go b/c the fairy knots were crazy out of control, my hair was curling up on itself
@TeacherMiss -yes i do. I find that i get them regardless if i wng or not...the only time i do not find them is when my hair was straight. Honestly, i do not think you can prevent them..just my humble opinion. lol...mine are always curling into the knots too, i have caught one in action if that makes sense! I just ignore them, they do not bother me as much anymore.
@MahoganyCurls thank you! I was just curious, I think keeping my hair moisturized is key. I was thinking of trying the CG method for a month. I am a shampooer, but I love the idea of being able to get in the shower co-wash and go. My current routine is way tooo long and am a looking to shorten that time.
I tried the One C earlier this year. It was really a good conditioner. I def plan on repurchasing and buying the No Poo. When I tried the CG method, I found that my hair felt much more healthy than when I used conditioners with cones.
lmbo!!!!...i bought the no-poo yesterday and though i was being smart by using it as a leave -in...BUG MISTAKE!!!....I was like "wat is this?".....just like u said...it dried my hair out....its a good cleanser though
@luvnmycoils- conditioner cleanses your scalp from the friction your fingers create when massaging the scalp and the product. Itmis kinda like the washing machine and how it cleans our clothes. I suggest reading the book because it explains this method more
Very informative! Thank you so much for sharing! I'm a little confused...I've read that conditioner only "conditions" not cleanses...for example if person rubs their hands together under running water only, hands don't get "clean". They won't be clean until an actual cleansing agent is used. Isn't it the same with hair and scalp? With the CG method, how can a person insure their hair and scalp are truly " clean" since conditioner isn't meant to cleanse?
Thanks for all of the information you're providing! Extremely helpful. Can you tell me what you use the Bed Head Maniac Conditioner for?? Is that used as a co-wash?
@taneshiawalton09 Sulfates don't stay on your hair anyway when you rinse shampoo out of your hair which you should be doing. Sulfates are detegents in shampoos that actually strip the hair that is why most commercial shampoos make the hair feel really dry. Sulfates are what remove silicones. Silicones are synthetic compounds used in a lot of products because they act as lubricants, sealants, and sort of plug up holes in the hair shaft caused by damage.
I am sooo glad you're back! Your videos saved my hair from split ends even though we have completely different textures. I'm transitioning right now (again) but my permed ends have hardly broken off thanks to you. 7 months and counting.. yeee
@Apriluv7779 OMGoodness! I stopped using the conditioner because it felt waxy on my hair too! I need to pull it back out again! I used it once and did not like it so it's been sitting.

That Deva Curl Heaven in Hair as a leave in/styler is the bomb! I started using it this summer...straight out of the shower, no other product. My hair was so soft and fluffy!
prettyparticular 3 months ago
@prettyparticular Oooo...I can't wait to try it!!.. It smells so heavenly...can't wait till its time to DC..hehe

ItsMeMonchhichi 3 months ago
@ItsMeMonchhichi Ive found that same issue..i get massive shrinkage, I spritz my hair with a refresher to reactivate my curls and 'unsmush' them then ive been using double prong hair clips and I strategically place them on the ends of my hair in the back and a few on eachside to elongate my hair while its drying...once i remove the clips my hair is more stretched...hope this may help you!
watchfuleye2008 3 months ago
@watchfuleye2008 Thanks for the tip! I'm actually going to try doing the wash-n-go in the evening when I get home from the gym because that's when I shower usually. That gives me time to have it stretched while drying instead of that 30 minutes I have before heading to work in the morning. I can sleep with a plastic cap on to keep it moist, then in the morning just apply conditioner & gel and roll out - hopefully. I'm going to try it tonight and see what happens.

Did you do anything to combat the "waxy" feeling that you used to get from the Devacurl, or did it just go away with time?

can you do a video talking about the tresemme naturals conditioner you use as well please or send me a detailed message about it?

@SQUiRT20101- the cone free product rinses out...so I call them wash n gos. Technically, they are wet n gos.
MahoganyCurls 3 months ago
@SQUiRT20101- my was n gos are not really "wash" in gos. Just re applying my conditioner, wetting my hair and detangling. I cowash when needed or 1x a month. The water cleans my scalp bc I use silicone free products do it rinses out. Therefore there isn't a need for me to cowash daily. Does that make sense?
MahoganyCurls 3 months ago
can you explan your difference between co-washing and wash-n-goes....because to me it seems like the same thing expect you not rising out the conditioner?? but what do "you" mean by you co-wah once a month and wash-an go every other day??
SQUiRT20101 3 months ago

Does the book say anything about this or is my hair trying to get used to the new method?
loveandtangles 3 months ago

MrsSarahWalz 3 months ago
@MrsSarahWalz -that is awesome!!!!! I know! i feel the same way. I do not follow everything the book states about the corkscrew and fractal curls...like scrunching and using the gel...i am so happy to hear that. I love my tresemme naturals too! That is why I stick with this method, it works for me...i have tried "experimenting" with cones and it was always a major failure...it didnt work for me. I am happy with my decision. Thank you for your input!

do you get fairy knots? how do you prevent them? i just wondered b/c that is the reason I stopped wash n go b/c the fairy knots were crazy out of control, my hair was curling up on itself
TeacherMiss 3 months ago
@TeacherMiss -yes i do. I find that i get them regardless if i wng or not...the only time i do not find them is when my hair was straight. Honestly, i do not think you can prevent them..just my humble opinion. lol...mine are always curling into the knots too, i have caught one in action if that makes sense! I just ignore them, they do not bother me as much anymore.
MahoganyCurls 3 months ago
@MahoganyCurls thank you! I was just curious, I think keeping my hair moisturized is key. I was thinking of trying the CG method for a month. I am a shampooer, but I love the idea of being able to get in the shower co-wash and go. My current routine is way tooo long and am a looking to shorten that time.
TeacherMiss 3 months ago
@MahoganyCurls and thank you for the quick response! And I LOVE your hair. it looks great.

I tried the One C earlier this year. It was really a good conditioner. I def plan on repurchasing and buying the No Poo. When I tried the CG method, I found that my hair felt much more healthy than when I used conditioners with cones.

The product sounds very similar to Hair Rules. How would you compare it to other products? I ordered the book; DVD is very good.

@luvnmycoils- conditioner cleanses your scalp from the friction your fingers create when massaging the scalp and the product. Itmis kinda like the washing machine and how it cleans our clothes. I suggest reading the book because it explains this method more
MahoganyCurls 3 months ago
@MahoganyCurls Ok thanks! Will check it out:)
luvnmycoils 3 months ago
Very informative! Thank you so much for sharing! I'm a little confused...I've read that conditioner only "conditions" not cleanses...for example if person rubs their hands together under running water only, hands don't get "clean". They won't be clean until an actual cleansing agent is used. Isn't it the same with hair and scalp? With the CG method, how can a person insure their hair and scalp are truly " clean" since conditioner isn't meant to cleanse?
luvnmycoils 3 months ago
@luvnmycoils You took the words right out of my mouth:).

Can you use vinegar to get the sulfates and silicones out?
taneshiawalton09 3 months ago 2
@taneshiawalton09 Sulfates don't stay on your hair anyway when you rinse shampoo out of your hair which you should be doing. Sulfates are detegents in shampoos that actually strip the hair that is why most commercial shampoos make the hair feel really dry. Sulfates are what remove silicones. Silicones are synthetic compounds used in a lot of products because they act as lubricants, sealants, and sort of plug up holes in the hair shaft caused by damage.

@MrsSarahWalz Oh ok. Thank you ;)
