Just watch the video of the composer himself playing this piece. And note just how much his bow wanders down the keyboard. It is the sound he wanted, made by the technique he used to create it.
@CJbouzouki There are many other professionals with a stradivarius, but this one still sounds better (than most), becouse he plays it with style. But you're right, his violin really is lovely:P If you look up the video where he talks about his stradivarius you can hear it with the camera closer to the violin
I also really like Gitlis' freedom in all the music domains, even in the way his bow goes nearly half the fingerboard. And yet he sound is still good. My teacher would not allow me to do that... :-)
He himself did change the song much....But he's right at letting his bow goes nearly half the fingerboard...It's the technique to make the sound become weaker, exactly matching the sheet.
I don't know when this video was recorded, but I know that Gitlis is now well into his eighties..... and he can still play like that. Honestly, in this case, I don't care about how correct the interpretation is stylistically because I like the way it sounds anyways. It has so much charm and grace. I smile every time I listen to it.
I remember hearing someone say once that "what makes or breaks a Kreisler piece is the timing and the pace." A remark absolutely on the button, as far as I'm concerned.
And Gitlis paces this piece so well. The subtle stretchings and releasings of the flow bring a warm smile to my face every time.
Really wanted to turn it of because I had more important things to do but couldn't. I was too moved by his performance. Now I won't get enough sleep..Why Ivry why?
i personally think that this isnt a great performance, but Ivry was fabulous in his day so i suppose that now hes older he can play like he wants and people will still love him because he is a legend!
Schön Rosmarin has nothing to do with the carnal pleasures on sale in a French bordello, but a lot with the Vienna in the beginning of the 20th century, where there was a lot of explicit and noncommercial sexual play, as exemplified in the works of Arthur Schnitzler ("Reigen"). Kreisler had also a rather agitated sexual life before falling in the hands of the redoutable Harriet. I think Gitlis brings this out to perfection. Others may prefer the castrated players of today, but I love Gitlis
There's something rather vomitous about playing Schoen Rosmarin like you're in a French Bordello. There is simply no way to construe a sleazy, kinky meaning to this kind of graceful writing. Kreisler doesn't play this piece even remotely like this. His playing has charm, grace, and lilt. After all this is said, however, thanks for posting anyway. :)
There's no one quite like Gitlis to turn Kreisler's gems into a raunchy mating call like this one. This type of toying with the music takes little or no profound musical skill and should be left in the practice room.I am not implying that Gitlis doesn't have any musical sense;he just doesn't choose to use it.HeifetzBeatsOistrakh is right-even if one prefers another way of playing these pieces over Kreisler, one must remain loyal to the charming qualities that should stay in his music for eternity.
I also like Ivry's version better than kreisler too... it's probably more natural and easier to play slightly with one's own style than to COMPLETELY imitate others?
lol.. then only to be fair you'll have to travel back to the beginning of 20th century and smack Kreisler himself... and on your way might as well do the same to Ysaye..
Omg~despite his age...his hands is still as good as b4 when he he played the introduction rondo capriccioso...So fast....and it's the fastest i'd ever seen of the intro. rondo. cap.
Awesome - it's like butter! I'd love to be like that when I'm 80 odd...That accompanist is truly incredible - she is utterly there at every single tempo change that Mr. Gitlis makes. I'm playing this at a concert on Wednesday, and I'm sort of dreading it now! Oh well....
Can't believe I used to hate this. Now it can unfailingly bring a smile to my face. Don't think anyone else in their right mind would play like this, and that's precisely what makes it so good.
The accompanist knows what the game is... Gitlis, like Kreisler, playful, coy, but maybe Ivry goes a step further here>>> mischief. Really cool, will send to favs.
Ivry Gitlis! Unique. Probably the most imaginative violinist ever. NEVER afraid, NEVER boring. He cannot be compared to anyone else. Some say he's crazy. Well, thanks for a bit of craziness to fascinate us and hold us spellbound. Thanks a lot, Adamwas, and please keep on posting Ivry Gitlis for us.
I think Ivry Gitlis has one of the most unique sounds I have ever heard. I have a recording of him playing Paganini's Concerto No. 2 and a few of the caprices that I really enjoy.
i agree stern is the one for this piece. ivry is good but not for this piece. his phrasing is too tense for such a lighthearted piece. I always knew his vibrato to be a violent on or off contest - when he does vibrate it is almost too much but at the important ending of phrases he sluffs the note off and doesn't vibrate at all creating a very cold and dull sound. I think he has the best technique to ever grace this planet
Ivry Gitlis plays with so much charm together with this young pianist, not to forget. He manages to combine charm and feelings of delight without being schmaltzig (sugarsweet). He belongs to the real great personalities. Isn't it wonderful with so many different great musicians? And, they all bring something of their own in their interpretations.
If we once and for all could forget about being best, and just be grateful for all the diversity.
I'm going to be adding a lot more of Gitlis including the rest of the Bartok Sonata - His Bach Chaconne - Fugue from the last Sonata C Major - Bloch Nigun, Sarasate Zigeurneweisen, a Mozart Sonata (:D), Beethoven Kreutzer etc
It's in my repertoire.
