  • I'm glad when they brought Alan Alda on the show they portrayed him as a good Republican with strong convictions, and NOT a jerk, cause this guy pretty much killed it for them up until that point, save Matthew Perry and Ainsley Hayes.

  • @4thengle

They were many good Republicans with strong convictions on the West Wing. Besides Vinick, Ainsley, and Quincy; there was Jack Reese, Walken, Haffley, Cliff Calley. With the exception of Richie (who really only served as a response to the age of "regular Joe" GOP candidates), all portrayals of Republicans were thoughtful and well-written.

  • @LYLS3637 Yeah, you make a good point. I guess people just tend to dwell on the negative more so than the positive, so Richie stands out.

  • @LYLS3637 Besides, for the first four seasons at least, of course it's well written, it's Sorkin! :)

  • @4thengle A pro-choice, pro-environmental Republican who criticizes politicians for religious displays and doesn't go to church? If you think the Republicans are reluctant to get behind Romney, imagine if Vinick was real.

  • I hope Rick Perry wins the primary so we can get a real life re-enactment of this election.

  • One person got their ass kicked by Josiah Bartlet.

  • How is it that the republicans manage to not only pray on those to stupid to know what is going on but also to sing stupidities praises.

  • What does "Crime, boy I don't know" mean anyway?

  • @PoliticCynic

It means "I (Ritchie) am so obsessed with beating you (Bartlet), and so psychologically and ideologically rigid, that I can't get past my talking points long enough to have a genuine human reaction to a personal tragedy." Crime, to him, is something to bash Bartlet with, something to scare voters with. It's an amorphous menace. It's not something that affects people in real life - and when it is, he doesn't know how to respond. Because he's a candidate, not a leader.

  • @chowfun18 Boy, I hope you're a writer! Wonderfully expressed. :) Songs

  • @PoliticCynic It means Governor Ritchie doesn't care. You can tell by the underlying tension and the barely controlled disgust in his demeanor that he has absolutely zero sympathy for Bartlet and zero empathy for C.J Cregg.

George Orwell said that a cliche is a statement we use when we want to avoid critical thinking. "Crime, boy I don't know" is a cliche Governor Ritchie uses to deflect any impulse toward sympathy and keep himself from having to think about what just happened.

  • Gov. Ritchie used the word "LIberal" as an insult...

is the desire to move past the 18th Century such a bad thing?

  • @PT109Boat 18'th century? Conservatives aren't even ready to leave the 15'th century yet.

  • Hollywood's view of US politics is this: Republicans bad, Democrats good.

Sometimes I wish TV and film writers would grow a pair, reach deep down and find some intellectual curiosity, and wright a political script that wasn't so shallow and reductive. I'm looking at you Aaron Sorkin!

  • @Kevitivity You can't deny that the West Wing was liberal, but that's not to say that they haven't presented several compelling conservative characters. The best example being Arnold Vinick.

  • @pseudonym32 Vinick and Walken was also redeemable. As was Lassiter, albeit he was never portrayed

  • @Kevitivity "...and "wright" a political script..."? For a group of people who think English should be the official language, you might want to learn how to use it properly first. How's that for reductive?

  • @viper5dn You must have been watching some Toby vids.

  • This scene tells everything about the left's view of itself and its opponents. The irony, of course, is that the leftists, who believe in their hearts they are the true Humans, are those who have most completely cut themselves off from their own humanity, while those whom they disdain for their lack of humanity have actually worked honestly and hard to keep it. Leftists will always write better scripts, but the people they're trashing are far better human beings than they.

  • @philWynk That is bullshit. Newt Gingrich likes to call himself and people like him the "moral majority."

"Crime......... boy, I don't know." is also a nice script. It also does nothing.

This is an awful lot like Donald Trump insulting Obama with yokle nonsense, and then Obama silencing him forever by killing Osama bin Laden. (If you watch the whole episode, the president struggles on whether or not to launch an operation that will kill a terrorist.)

    VERY SIMILAR! ;)

  • @MegaCrevice You guys are hilarious. You literally do not know the difference between fantasy and reality, nor between public relations and truth. Trump was not silenced by Obama, Obama did not kill bin Laden, and neither has the slightest to do with this script.

During the 2008 election, Dems posted a YouTube of the theme music from West Wing played over pics of Obama's team. Problem is, half of the team are criminals, and all of them are liars. But Dems can't tell the difference.

  • @philWynk Problem is, YOU are the liar. Not anywhere vaguely CLOSE to half of Obama's team are "criminals", in fact almost NONE of them are.

As for "liars", you've given us some whoppers so far, it's hard to know where you think you can say it about others, but it takes a special kind of gall to claim that the people who support equality and treating the poor with some decency and ending these hideous wars and not torturing people have "lost their humanity".

  • @PrisonerNumber9653 "it takes a special kind of gall to claim that the people who support equality and treating the poor with some decency and ending these hideous wars and not torturing people have "lost their humanity"."

The entire enterprise is about choosing whatever policy makes you sound more "compassionate," when in truth you don't really care a fig for the real people. The proof is that liberal policy invariably hurts those they purport to help -- but libs never change the policy.

  • @philWynk I don't give a damn about how something "sounds", it genuinely IS more compassionate, more humane. It's a vile LIE to claim I don't care about people, just a sick lie. It's also crap to claim these programs don't help people, they most certainly do.

Republicans want to gut these programs and give the wealthy another fat tax cut. EVERY time these programs are cut poverty increases and the suffering is worse.

What next, dropping bombs on innocent people in Iraq is "compassionate"?

  • @PrisonerNumber9653 "Compassion." Heh. Libs create welfare; black families break up, illegitimate births go through the roof, 5 generations of families where nobody has worked. Libs create comprehensive sex ed: teen pregnancy increases by an order of magnitude and an epidemic of STDs ensues. Libs take over education: spending goes up 1000%, literacy drops like a rock. Libs take over Detroit and New Orleans, they turn into ghost towns.

Lib "compassion" is the kiss of death.

  • @philWynk to stay with West Wing...post hoc, ergo proctor hoc. Welfare did NOT cause families to break up, did NOT cause unwanted pregnancies, and this LIE of "generational welfare" is NOT reality. Most people go on welfare for a short time until they can get back on their feet, and denying help does NOTHING to help them get to work, in fact it HARMS their chances.

Even more idiotic is blaming sex ed for teen pregnancies and STDs, which it PREVENTS.

Education costs rose because of IDEA. more

  • @PrisonerNumber9653 Oh, I see. But those who died while not having health insurance, died BECAUSE they did not have health insurance. Your West Wing "analysis" does not apply to your own arguments, eh?

The classic book on the subject is Charles Murray's "Losing Ground." You should read it. But for the short version, google "Sowell war on poverty revisited" and read the article at Capitalism Magazine.

  • @philWynk Except AGAIN this horseshit that you think the people at Harvard Med are IDIOTS, and cannot figure out your 5th grader logic.

And I have no intention of wasting my time reading any more of the radical right's crapola, I see Sowell constantly in the newspaper, and his bile is absolutely lacking in any humanity OR logic, just naked greed.

And I'd rather read "graphic pictures of car crashes monthly" than Capitalism magazine. I get more than enough of the right's propaganda, thanks.

  • @philWynk Literacy has NOT dropped like a rock. The right lies about lots of things, none perhaps so much as education. Reagan invented this myth of "Failing public schools" to try to rob our underfunded schools to give to Christian conservative schools and give wealthy parents another tax cut.

And it's LACK of help that's caused problems in Detroit and New Orleans, not too much. It's greed, not compassion, causing the problem.

  • @philWynk I was not making any comparison between fantasy and reality. I was simply rubbing in the fact that (in the show) the president is being called a weak liberal who has no moral convictions. The president was being insulted by a blow-hard and in the end you see the actual decisions that the president has to make (he later orders a covert operation to kill a terrorist). Sorry but this is very similar to Trump claiming Obama is not an American citizen and then Obama killing bin Laden.

  • @philWynk and the youtube video you speak of was posted by Obama fans. I gather they could care less about you getting jealous about Obama supporters showing their support on a video. There is also video of the Bush administration with West Wing theme music.

    Stop whining.

Such a shame that you wasted your comment. You spelled everything perfect too, LOL! Yet in the end all you did was rush back to the yahoo thinking that Obama is a criminal.

Half the team are criminals? Gee, OK LMAO!!!

  • @philWynk Your speech patterns and language betray you, the conservative media's echo-chamber has done a masterful job of indoctrination (though there really is nothing conservative about their ideology). As per your humanist argument, it's to be expected, this is what your echo-chamber espouses ad-neasueam with a hint of theistic superiority - Ironic given the "moral majority" & "family values" crowd so frequently finds themselves embroiled in sexual scandals, often of the homosexual variety.

  • @philWynk Really? Those who oppose equality for gays and viciously attack them are better humans than those who say all people are equal? Those who see 45,000 people die every year from lack of access to health care because of greed and say give big insurance and HMOs more are better people than those saying everyone should have health care? That those who want to cut our schools and programs for the poor are better than those saying they need support? Really?

  • @PrisonerNumber9653 Yes, really. And they're also better than YouTube posters who recite Democratic party talking points as though they were indisputable facts.

"45,000 die" = you don't know the diff between genuine research and propaganda from people wearing lab coats.

"Greed" = you're the tool of Marxists, but will swear to your grave that you aren't.

"Cut our schools" = you'll tell lies for partisan gain.

    And so forth...

    Stop wasting my time.

  • @philWynk Wow, total pack of lies there.

The 45,000 was from a study by Harvard Med, I do know the difference between real research, say, proof of global warming, and propaganda, like the far right calling it a "hoax" or calling homosexuality "chosen lifestyle".

Greed--So, if you're against greed, you're now a Marxist. That's truly idiotic. You're right I will swear it's not true, because it isn't. Greed IS our problem.

Cut our schools--I'm NOT lying, schools are having their budgets gashed.

  • @PrisonerNumber9653 Harvard Med "study" in the Am Jour Pub Health, yes. They simply assumed that anybody who died and did not have health insurance, died BECAUSE they did not have health insurance. This is not research, son. The Obama administration asked for a scare statistic, and Harvard obliged. See what I mean about propaganda by men wearing lab coats?

As for the rest, I've got more important things to do than argue with an ignorant yutz, so... gee, I guess you win. Have a nice life.

  • @philWynk And they DID die because they didn't have health insurance. I love that you think you know more about medical research than the Harvard Medical School and American Journal of Public Health. It's not a "Scare tactic", Obama had NOTHING to do with it. Obama's "reform" is a half-assed gift to big insurance, with no public option (reminding us AGAIN that he is not a liberal)

This isn't "propaganda", it's fact, and it's a disgrace in the wealthiest nation on earth.

  • @PrisonerNumber9653 Wow. "It came from Harvard, therefore it MUST be true!" You COW. Did you actually read the research yourself? Do you think through ANYTHING for yourself??? "Obama had NOTHING to do with it!" Oh, right, it just happened to get published in the middle of the the public debate over ObamaCare. Pure coincidence.

You are a mindless sheep. Leave me alone. Go graze somewhere and let the humans decide policy, k?

  • @philWynk So, please explain what credentials YOU have to look down your snoot at Harvard Med? I in fact DID read the research, the whole thing, and I ALWAYS think for myself. Obama had NOTHING AT ALL to do with the research. The idea that it's "his" because he was in office is like claiming JFK invented the space capsule.

You can call me a "sheep", yet you haven't actually shown ONE WORD I've said to be wrong. I'm NOT a sheep, I only deal with facts and human decency. You have neither.

  • @PrisonerNumber9653 Yet, you're here telling me that if X people die without health insurance, it must be BECAUSE they are without health insurance.

Does correlation imply causation? Here on Cape Cod, ice cream sales rose 1200% last month. Boating accidents also rose 1200% at exactly the same time. Do ice cream sales cause boating accidents?

Yes, son, you are a sheep.

I have a Masters in Business from a major uni. And unlike you, I don't believe everything I read, not even from my own side.

  • @philWynk I'm not telling you that, the research is clearly SHOWING that. It's also common sense, you surely know that people get substandard or no care at all if they're uninsured.

To think that Harvard Med is too STUPID to think ice cream causes boat accidents shows how incredibly flimsy your case here is. Having a degree in BUSINESS means you know more about medicine than Harvard Med?

I'm NOT a sheep, nor am I your son, asshole. I question everything from both sides, this isn't from a side

  • "The idea that it's "his" because he was in office is like claiming JFK invented the space capsule."

Or like claiming Obama killed bin Laden. Somehow, your arguments always wind up demolishing things you've said yourself. Are you starting to notice that?

  • @philWynk And, indeed NOBODY has said Obama killed OBL. The point remains, the research was NOT directed or affected in ANY way by the President, it was peer-reviewed, it's NOT a political act, it's an act of scientific research. None of my arguments have "demolished" anything. The fact remains--many, many people are dying because we run health care NOT as health care, but as a product for corporations to make massive profits off of, something available ONLY to those who can afford it.

  • @philWynk And I'd ask a return question--ever spent any time in a hospital with someone who's uninsured? I have, I know someone with a food allergy who had several inches of lower GI tract collapse, obviously a life-threatening situation. She went in, and they did surgery to repair the problem...

    OUTPATIENT!

That's right, they went up and did major surgery on her intestine, packed her full of cotton, and sent her home.

In the wealthiest nation on the planet. That's inexcusable, happens daily

  • @philWynk And this highlights the problem...nearly ALL the conversation in the media and legislature is batting things back and forth between center and hard right. Those who want to pretend there's no crisis, so corporate profits can stay obscenely high, argue with Obama types who include a few more but offer NO public option for those who cannot afford insurance, and not only won't allow single payer into the conversation, advocates were arrested trying to speak at the hearing.

  • @philWynk Oh, I'm sorry, did that reality cut into your precious "let's get our days loading of propaganda and hate from Rush" time?

See, you decided to piss off someone who's not ONLY a proud leftist, but knows some facts and doesn't shy away from an argument.

Yes, FEDERAL education spending has increased, but it's only an extremely SMALL part of the budgets of schools, MOST of it is state and local, the hardest hit in poor areas, mostly state, and state education budgets are being gutted.

  • @philWynk As for "Marxist", I freely and proudly admit to being a Democratic Socialist. It's NOT the same as "Marxist," at all. I'm not a tool for anyone, I'll say what I know and what I think and it's not "code" and it's not a "front" for something and I'm not a "tool", it's what I know and what I think, that's it.

Funny how you never answered any of my questions, though.

What about my liberalism has been "cut off from humanity," pray tell?

  • George Bush, meet Governor Ritchie. Oh, what's that? You already did..?

  • President Obama, meet President Bartlet. Here's a pen and notebook. There will be a test.

  • @KaizerRyu83 I agree that Bartlet kicks ass but there is a difference between TV and reality.

  • @marcusstromeyer I don't know, most real-life politicians are just as scripted as this.

  • @marcusstromeyer

Let's face it- when very left-leaning writers are in charge of a show, we can expect them to generally write the left politicans a little smarter, a little better than the right- leaning characters. But despite that very normal bias, this is an excellent show!

  • @KaizerRyu83 Gov. Ritchie was based on Gerore W. Bush not President Obama.

  • @TheFrogger15 I think the previous poster was saying that the President should emulate Bartlet, not that the President was like Governor Ritchie.

  • @KaizerRyu83 Yes, god, yes. 100% yes!

  • @KaizerRyu83 President Bartlet is white, fictional, and lives in the realm of fantasy, there wasnt a single episode where he had to defend his birth certificate nor was he ever called a Muslim in the era of the WTC attack, never had a major financial meltdown combined with a woldwide economic problem, 2 wars, or face a congress who sole operations mantra was to say NO to everything no matter how sensible, practical or good for the government....class dismissed

  • @maven21 Bartlet did have an opposition Congress actually. Obama is the closest to Bartlet though. Obama 2012.

  • @KaizerRyu83

It's called 2012, and he is only passing because America is grading on a curve.

  • I've watched every episode at least 179 times.

This has always been my favourite scene.

  • Best line ever against one of those good old boy, regular joe asshole politicians
