  • Did he died?

  • @kingsm33d

    No i dont think so

  • I've never heard anything about this, can someone please tell me what happened and why it's so tragic? :S

  • @TopRugbyLad wikipedia michael watson

  • Chris Eubank Jr. is such a better boxer.....

  • AW gid horendous absolutely horendous what are those guys thinking the poor fellow was out and the threw him back in there, to be brutally fucked in the rectum. I can taste the vile at the back of my throat Horendous

  • History will remember Eubank as a great fighter, and a good man

  • @whitepanther84 Eubank was/is a prick...just saying

  • @McGovP cause you knew him personally, right?

  • I love the sport, but knowing what happened to Micahel after makes this uncomfortable viewing. A great fighter in the ring became an even greater man outside it. Michael, you are a truly inspiring gentle man. I wish you well

  • Both men were the bravest fighters...and they are friends to this day

  • Look at the state of Watson at the start of the 12th..groggy and reeling.

They should hang their heads for letting that man carry on.

    Disgusting.

  • TRAGIC END TO GREAT FIGHT

  • Horrible to watch, horrible.

  • Good stop Ref !

Gave him a chance , but sadly , too late

    Good bless Michael Watson

  • Well done to the reff for stopping that then, i recon some reffs wouldn't have since watson had his arms up and most those punches were not making contact other than to watsons defence! obviously the damage had already been done though!

BIG rrespect to you sir watson... Respect to any man that can get in the ring and fight like he did against the likes of eubank and benn!

  • that's the bravest thing i've ever seen, that man answering the bell in the 12th. it is eerie how eubank's and benn's career mirrored one another. respect to these British brawlers.

  • Simply awesome! The brutal nature of boxing is on full display here. Match of the year in my opinion.

  • call Eubank what you want. Ive watched many of his fights, and deservedly is called, simply the best.

  • fuck off mcguigan u bum

  • Very hard to watch knowing the tragedy ending. A wonderful uppercut and left hand from Eubank suddenly doesn't seem to be deserving of any praise at all when you know the whole story

  • @barryferguson I couldn't agree more, very hard to watch knowing the terrible outcome. At least one good thing came out of this in that there is now always proper medical supervision at pro fights

  • How can Barry McGuigan repeatedly get his name wrong? He keeps saying Eubanks.

  • @Steve7508 His name was Chris Eubanks, but he decided to drop the 's'. Bit of boxing trivia for you there ;)

  • Absolute tragic ending.Total respect to Watson.

  • watson was the best of the three of him benn and eubank he was up there with hagler in my opinion

  • Total respect to both fighters

  • Remember seeing this live on the telly, everyone but everyone was cheering for Mike, such a shame though what happened. He was one of the best fighters i have seen ringside. Credit to both fighters. Its a real shame though that Hearn tried playing Eubank as the man to dislike to increase bums on seats. As Chris was one hell of a decent fighter, though noone liked him, or at least very few people did.

As for Mike though, a great career cut short, life is unfair sometimes.

  • It is a shame that the tragic outcome mars the memory of round 11 which was perhaps the best round of boxing ever seen in a british ring.

    Two warriors.

  • jonandryan I've heard Watson collapsed after the fight, paramedics arrived after 8 min. etc... why none of the Youtube clips are showing the full story ?

  • Ridiculous he was put back in for the final round. He doesn't know where he is.

  • Read watson's biography if you haven't already. A brilliant read. I too was shouting for Watson as a child and was taken in by the atmosphere just watching it on telly. Watching it back now though it is blindingly obvious he shouldn't have been sent out for the 12th round.

  • As someone who watched this fight at the time & was roaring for Watson to finish Eubank off,

his corner should have NEVER have sent him out for the 12th round

  • omg eubanks power after he got knocked down

  • 1991 A year I remember well. I was in the intensive care bed next to him recovering from pituatry surgery for a few days. William Grace ward, QE2 building, Barts Hospital, London, England.

He was a big arsenal fan and apparently they were regualr visitors. his family were also very supportive and their always too. I don't really remember it though but my parents told me afterwards. I watched this fight too, sometime before I went in hospital.

Take care Micheal & be strong,

    Andrew

  • This is very sad to watch, the way Michael has recovered since and not shown any bad feeling is a credit to an amazing man who is a credit to the human race...take care Michael..

  • the corner cussed the ref for stoppin it yet they didn;t pull their fighter out of the fight after staring at him for over a minute in between rounds. Can't blame the ref;-)

  • @darrenhollanddj Agreed. There's no way the ref can be blamed. The brain damage Watson recieved was almost certainly sustained before the 12th round even started. But there's no way the ref or anyone else could have known this at the time. I really wanted Watson to win this fight, and despite being a huge fan, and distressed at what happened to him, Eubank was a true warrior too. He should have retired after this fight, he was always too scared to go in for the kill in his succeeding fights.

  • OMG when Watson gets knocked down at 3.02 the referee should have stopped the fight.

  • when watson came out the 12 round the ref now it that watson was gone, the ref make the mistake. its awful to see this bad very bad judgment.peace

  • Much respect to two great fighters

  • It was actually a good stoppage, the damage was already done. Eubank barely connected with watson's head in that last onslaught, I reckon. Still, what happened made it hard to look back on it as the great fight it was.

  • This and this alone makes me hate this sport.

  • @Gavelaa

why are you watching it then if you hate it?

  • One Punch Eubank wishes he never landed...

One 1 Minute corner time Watsons' team should of thrown in the towel...

One wobbly round start the Ref should never of started...

One fighter about to have his world totally robbed.

    Tragic.

  • This fight ruined both boxers.

  • Respond to this video...should NEVER have happned Watson won the first fight CLEARLY.

  • in terms of an end to a match it was great but to think what came of it is horrible. i dont like to watch it tbh. look at the way watson comes out for the final round???? how on earth could they let him do that

  • True warriors the pair of them. Eubank never really gets the credit he deserves. He was a complete fighter.

  • The thing that makes me mad about this is Watson's corner. Even though I think the damage was done with that uppercut, he should never have been sent out for that 12th round, just look at him, he could barely put one foot in front of the other. A real lesson for all cornermen here I think, particularly the one who complained to the ref immediately after it was stopped. Anyone could see he was finished, and his corner know him better than anyone! Truely sad end to an otherwise amazing fight.

  • Classic era for British boxing the Benn/Eubank/Watson trilogy was essential viewing. Watson was my favourite. Easy in retrospect but 4.13 Watson had gone. Last round was..... u know the rest!

  • This fight should never had happened, Eubank won first time around. Its only cos Watson was saying he was robbed the 1st time that he got a rematch and this was the end of his career. Sad!!!

  • good fight.best man won.. my thoughts are with watson in this brutal sport.. regards..

  • Its very sad to see Michael Watson come out for the last round when he was obviously desperately in need of medical attention. This would not be allowed to happen today.

  • Eubank went on the record years after this fight to say that end to the 11th was both the pinacle and most tragic moment of his career. He said he had no idea how he summonded the energy to get up or how he was able to pull off that perfect uppercut.

  • Yes - seeing this after so many years, it's clear Eubank was the stronger man.

    Classic fight.

  • What people fail to realise is that by the WBO rules there is a mandatory 8 count when a fighter goes down. The commentator even says 'theres a mandatory 8 count, no there is not....' Eubank was up at roughly 5 and had connected to knock Watson down after roughly 9 seconds in total. This should have NEVER happened!! The count should have went to 8, by the time the ref checked Eubank and waived it on, the bell would have rung. This poor decision by the referee has changed Watsons heath for sure.

  • good good good EUBANK FIGHT!

  • fuckin amazing fight, what an end. Just amazing.. lol respect to both boxers. Eubank is a legend, is not for this moment alone lol but he was amazing.

  • What courage by both fighters...literally they were staring death in the face, trading blows at that level of exhaustion. You rarely ever ever see that level of bravery in any sport or endeavour.

  • Eubank.Utter class, even when the chips were down, heart, skill, bravery, how this country never truly embraced him I will never understand,my favourite British Boxer ever (In and out of the Ring ) - a gentleman

  • boxing experts???

  • lol @ the commentators, "i dont think eubanks got enough left in him to knock watson out.. its all over for eubank"

then eubank hops up and puts watson in a coma

srsly tho, after this fight eubanks never been the same

  • Personally i feel this fight changed Eubank in the ring. He lost an his edge after what happened to Watson which does not suprise me. Amazing fight terrible ending

  • @ELUSIVEJIM

Very much so. This fight took away his instinct to move in to finish a fight when he had the other fighter in trouble. His first fight with Steve Colllins was a classic example when Eubank floored Collins late on, but did not finish him off...

  • what the corner think letting him out for the 12th round they was supposed to be looking after their boxer

  • waston got brain damage after dat fight right?

  • two fighting heroes, tragedy for watson, but how much heart did eubank have, it seemed all over for eubank at one point, its a tragedy it ended that way cuz i think if both fighters had come out of it ok, i think this fight would be shown every month on TV, one of the great fights ever, but tragic for watson

  • how can u laugh and say he turned him into a veg?

i feel sorry for all the people that have to be around u everyday, and i hope u never have kids u make me sick.

  • You must have been hit by Eubank too andrew? You're an absolute immature retarded.

Fathered 3 kids? I hope they're not as genetically deficient as yourself. Sad man.

  • what do you know?3 kids?good jobs..why lie?your a saad and lonely waster.you toss off every night into a kleenex.you never had any pussy.You don't know your father,your mum don't know him..fuck you..i wanna rip your head off.cunt.

  • whos lying u tard i want 2 rip ur head off cunt

  • How the fuck was Watson allowed to go out for the 12th round ?

  • What an incredible 11th round. Poor Watson was out on his feet starting round 12. True warriors. Thanks for the post.

  • i think even if watson never hit his head on the ropes eubank would have finished him in the 12th anyway.

    that uppercut was something tremendous!

shame for poor michael though, what a tragedy for a great fighter!

  • It's an easy call with hindsight to suggest that the referee did anything other than stop the fight at the right moment. Serious brain injuries are thankfully rare in modern boxing, and a lot of the rules regarding health and safety with a greater mandatory presence of ringside medical care and a quicker hospitalisation process were brought in following this fight.

Eubank also took an absolute battering and had to demonstrate great bravery. On another day, there but for the grace of God.

  • watson shunt av bin able 2 fight after round 11 is corner shud be shot

  • Comment removed

  • lucifer has got a hold of u two going to hell if you don't rebuke your ways...

  • This moron who can't see the man is finished and should never have been out for the 12th reminds me of a shark. If you remove a sharks brain it's body continues to make the swimming motion.

This this brain dead grunt keeps on grunting with no brain to control the grunts.

  • Look at 4:10-4:15, especially when the referee touches Watson (4:14). He nearly looses his balance ...

Sure he had guts and would like to continue, but that's why the corner and the referee are there for ; protect the fighter and make such a decision with clear mind.

There is a thin line between guts and protection. If you were him, sure you would like to go on, but you are in a position to answer ; would it really be worth it ?

  • at 4:10-4:15 watson does look weary, but who would'nt after 11 rounds of boxing ?

watch watson before the bell, he says come on and waves his hand at eubank to bring it on.

even when the ref pulls watson closer, watson still puts his glove up to touch eubanks glove for the start of the round.

if i was his corner man i would have sent him out still.

obviously you can say it was not worth it now, but at the time of this fight it was well worth carrying on, just my opinion.

  • why McGuigan or Duke McKenzie not say that Watson should be pulled out ?

becouse they are fighters and they know the crack with boxing :)

fight was stopped at the right time for me, made no difference that the fight carried on as watson did'nt even get hit when the 12th started, blocked everything, he just didnt try land himself.

  • Guys, Watson's corner screwed it up, big-time. He should have never come out for round 12 and the referee is also responsible. Just look at Eubank staring at Watson when they're supposed to shake hands. The ref slightly pushes Watson and he nearly falls down ...

  • your just as bad as OPPOZED1 fighters fight, its as simple as that. Waston look nacked thats true, but i'd want to carry on in his position. Its called guts mate, bit of pride. Nobody knew he had brain damage.

  • Comment removed

  • It's plain to all that this man was dead on his feet, practically defenceless, and should never have been out there for that final round.

And someone beaten sensless isn't fit to decide when it's over. The corner should decide that. And they badly failed him.

No drivel about "win at all costs" carries any weight with anything but an infantile moron.

Brain damage is the cost, and what but a simpleton would think that's acceptable.

  • Whats wrong with everyone ???

If i were a boxer in Michael Wastons position in the 11th round i'd want to continue. Neither Watson or his corner knew he had brain damage, so i say they were right to continue.

Many a boxer has come out for a round looking knackered and knocked the other guy out, you just seen it yourself when Eubank knocked Watson down.

This was just one of those unlucky sad incidents that happens in all sports :(

  • What sort of retard are you? They send out a man who is unsteady on his feet and can't even hold his hands up and i'm the stupid one eh.

Listen numb nuts. If a man can't keep his hands up he is finished. Now just you wander off and talk utter rot on something you know anything about.

  • ;isten dickhead, as a fighter i would never want my corner to stop my fights. Doing this sport we all know the risks before we step in the ring, its a chance we take.

Cant even hold his gloves up ??? u prick, first thing Watson does is put his gloves up, constantly....watch it again fool...then come back when u know what YOU are talking about lol FOOL

  • I have been around fighters all my life. And pseudo fighters such as you too.

Tha man is FUCKED, you nitwit. OUT of it. DEFENCELESS.

Look up all those big words in the dictionary if there is any misunderstanding of their meaning.

You can barely string a coherent sentence together far less make comment on this mans injuries or when they were inflicted.

Which raises questions of just who is brain damaged.

Come back and be verbally humiliated anytime.

  • verbally humiliated ? cant string a sentence together ?

what the fuck you on about you goon, so i fucked the L up in listen, big deal fuckwit.

Again you say defenceless ? watch the fight again you fucking prick, gloves are up so fight on.

  • Yes I do realise you have no idea what i'm on about. That was exactly my point.

You are of such a low intellect that you imagine a single letter is of relevance when speaking of sub standard literacy.

Which is an indication of cerebral inadequacy which is further proof of an iq so far below the norm that it can't recognise the condition of a man so drained he can barely stay on his feet far less defend himself.

A feeble attempt to keep the hands up does not make a defence you dimwit.

  • lol...your such a fucking cunt, speak english you moron...lol

Could not give a shit what my IQ is and you attempt to talk bollocks is just funny.

Just cos i dont wanna sound like a twat using big words makes me thick ? u mug

Ref stopped it straight away, so whats the problem ? was just an unfortunate ending, simple as that.

  • I understand a grunt such as you isn't aware of it but I am indeed speaking simple standard English.

I further understand a grunt like you has no conception that you just backtracked because it's getting through the fog that you're being humiliated.

OF COURSE the referee stopped it quickly you moron. THAT'S exactly the point. That the man was already beaten senseless and shouldn't have been sent out for that round.

THAT'S the problem you grunting piece of low iq stupidity.

  • wow...your so intelligent mate, fucking idiot.

backtracked on what you fucking idiot ?

thats your opinion dickhead, i'd say fight on at the start of the 12th, was stopped at the correct point.

  • Actually i'm not so intelligent, it merely appears so when i'm compared to a grunt like you.

"Ref stopped it straight away, so whats the problem ?"

THAT'S backtracking, agreeing with the majority opinion that it had to be stopped quickly because he shouldn't have been out there dead on his feet at all.

Now go ahead and illustrate my stupidity, dazzle us all with such a stunning display of insight and verbosity that all will clearly see how stupid I am and how clever you are.

  • No your not really, you just come across as a fucking tosser. Your the one that started the insults moron.

not backtracking at all, why cant you here what im saying ? if a fighter wants to go on he will do, was nobodys fault.

if Watson had thrown punches he would not have been stopped, how could anyone know about the brain damage ?

its ok now saying it should be stopped but at the time you just wanna in, at all costs.

  • wanna win at all costs

  • "stupid comment you made really"

THAT was YOU. Commenting directly to me. A retarded comment given the facts. And any opinion of yours about how I come acroos has no value to anyone but you in your foggy little reality.

A dimwitted infantile world populated by fantasy movie characters like Rocky who can be beaten to a pulp and still fight on unaffected.

Now that your poor memory has been jogged don't go looking for pity that you were verbally slapped all over the place.

  • u cant verbally slap nobody u thick cunt

  • Tell you what oppozed, I have been around psuedo-intellectuals like YOU all my life. The effort you have clearly put into your past ill constructed prose is faintly humiliating. Your thesaurus must be smouldering.

Unfotunately for you, intelligence is coupled with class, of which you display none. Anyone who peppers their comments with such idioms as 'numbnuts', 'retard' or 'moron' certainly has no place remonstrating with someone on the finer points of verbal sparring.

  • The corner men are entirely to blame for this disaster. They have sent Watson out when he clearly isn't fit to continue and the referee on his part has to give the man a punchers chance. He had just knocked Eubank down mnutes earlier.

And the referee in fact saved the whole thing from becoming even more tragic by stopping it fairly quickly.

  • The corner are not to blame at all, the damage was already done before they sent him out. I would have wanted to go out for the next round if it was me, how were the corner to know that he had brain damage ? stupid comment you made really :s

  • Great Heart from Eubank

    Shame for poor Michael

  • Watson's cornermen were totally out of order. They should've been calling for a doctor at the end of the 11th round, it's obvious Watson is out on his feet.

  • totally agee with you VonSheldon- sending Watson out for the final round was stupid and verging on criminally negligent- Michael didn't know where the f he was and basically target practice for Eubank.

  • i dont understand why watsons cornermen came and grabbed him and rushed him to the corner. i understand they wanted the title after they were clearly robbed in the first meeting but putting a mans health at risk just is not right. even at the start of the 12th the ref pulls watson in to fight. you can clearly see watson is still dazed there. fight should been stopped

  • What on earth are the people in Watson's corner thinking when they sent him out for the 12th round ?

  • this is one of the greatest and tragic fights ever ,eubank was hailed as one of the greatest fighters of the 90s and alas watson is still shown as the side effects of boxing to this day. eubank never forgave himself afterwards and he became a close friend of him because of it

  • Seems just like last week i watched this live

Have to say this does turn my stomach

  • Respect to both fighters. Would be considered the best British fight ever if it were not for the tragic outcome

  • ONe of the greatest fights of all time. And one of the most terrible.watsons standnig up but you can tell hes out of it. He probably already had the brain damage before he was pushed back into his seat by the ringmen. Watson was a great fighter, along with Benn and eubank he made alot of people happy in that era. seen him on setanta a while back, and to hear how hes got on with his life in the way he has is fantastic.

  • Eubank lost his edge after this fight i think it affected his carrier plus his personal life, knowing what he did to Watson. i didn't watch this video i paused it as it was a tragic event in boxing . But as i tell everyone all boxers know the risks when they step in to the ring.

  • can you plz tell me what happened. all i see is a tko

  • Go read up on what happened to Watson after this fight then you'll find out what all the hype is about.

  • when his head hit the ropes at his neck on round 12 it messed up his brain, the continued beating didnt help, he got back to his corner, collapsed and lost consciousness and then it took 2 hours before he was at a proper hospital

  • Watson could hardly walk coming out for the last round.

It wasnt the refs fault as much as his corner mens fault.

Sad end to a brave fighter.

Eubank although arrogant, was a good fighter.

  • doctors didnt arrive till 8 mins after he needed oxygen and when they did they were in dinner suits

  • referee will have to live with dragging watson into that last round. disgusting

  • This was such a great fight, unfortunately marred by tragedy. I'm so glad Michael has made a good recovery since. I really feared the worst when i first heard of his condition. :( As for Eubank, he was never the same after this fight. He definitely lost his killer instinct. I really think he could have beaten Calzaghe if he still had the killer instinct he had before this fight. He definitely had a lot of guilt over what happened to Watson. 2 great warriors, have to respect them both!

  • Why is everyone just talking about Eubank?? This was a fucking tragedy for the man who was beating him and all you are talking about is Eubank??No words of respect for Watson?!?!

  • watson was very good, but eubank just happened to be a world champ, showman and was never beaten in his prime..but you right Watson was a very good fighter

  • Eubank was beaten in his prime, he himself admits this.

Unfortunately for Micheal Watson, the judges didn't see it that way and he was robbed of a victory that should have been his.

You say Waston was a very good fighter. I disagree. I think he was more than that, I believe he had the ability to be the best fighter to ever come out of Britian.

  • But as fate would have it, he was destined to be more of an inspiration outside of the ring by recovering from injuries that all examining doctors say should have ended his life.

Then going on to speak out against the British board of boxing for not having the proper medical facilities at hand for situations like his, forcing them to rectify this. Which, I think undoubtedly, has saved many more fighters from suffering the same fate as he and his family has had to endure.

    An inspiration to all.

  • well said

  • eubank was never the same after this fight,he was scared to hit hard :( eubank could and should of been a great fighter, when i say great i mean just behind fighters like haggler

  • I think most "real" boxing fans put Eubank up there with the likes of Haggler, Herns and Duran.

  • i cant put Eubank,up there with them 3,but he up there with the likes of roy jones and ,hopkins

  • both boxers went in the ring knowing what damage could be done its the chance boxers take

  • so he fainted after this match and didn't received enough oxigan for his brains and got in a coma?

  • Thats right, the fight was at White hart lane in London and their were no Doctors or Paramedics at the firght! He was out for 8 mins before a doctor turned up! Not until he arrived at hospital 30 minutes later did he get the oxygen he needed. He was in a coma for well over a month and lucky to still be alive!

  • Eubank has done alot for for Michael Watson since. Nigel Benn has done little for Gerald Mclellan.

He was never the same after this fight. Never got over the guilt.

  • You'd be surprised what Benn has done for Mclellan. Only Jones has done more.

  • 3.00 best uppercut in all history

  • Eubank was pretty good. I've a lot more respect for his skills after watching a few clips here on youtube. He was a good technician w/damn good power. We didn't see him here much in the States so he's largely unknown to US boxing fans. The guy was good though. Not Hagler-good, mind you, but still top class.

  • the main reson he is unknown over there is your hbo ppv only show interrest when he beats a yank, and thats why it took so long for you lot to realise joe calzaghe

  • @Kedbuka he had an iron chin also. in his prime, top 10 pound for pound.

  • Does anyone else think that after what happened to micheal watson, chris eubanks lost interest and heart in boxing i think he blames himself. i remember seeing chris eubanks training

  • His name is EUBANK.

    Brighton legend.

  • when he was born his name was Christopher Livingstone Eubanks he later dropped the s from Eubanks

  • exactly, so his name is Eubank, and jesus mate everyone knows that he was never the same after that fight.

  • its eubancks he wantedto distance himself from his average brothers who were boxers

  • Comment removed

  • to be honest i think the ref was largly at fault for letting the fight go on. Chris is my all time best boxers and even i admit Micheal would have been something special if that had not have happened

  • That upper cut followed by the left hook is probably the hardest and quickest punch I've ever seen in my life in any boxing match. Watson stood no chance after that. Any person who doesn't box would probably die with the power of those punches. It's a damn shame what happened to Watson but that upper cut and left hook has to be admired.

  • Once you get the fog in your eyes it takes a while to clear. No one is immune to that kind of onslaught.

  • FUCK YOU REF HAVE A HEART ATTACK!

  • does anyone know how to make the screen bigger. it used to be full screen then suddenly went like this

  • Can't wait for the third fight (he he)

  • Die a painfull death.

  • that was the most amazing finish to a fight ever, bar none. I've seen better fights overall (but this was a good one), but the finish to this is unrivaled. Such a shame that Watson's subsequent injury means we can't hold this in the esteem it deserves.

  • his corner should neva of let him out....but they always want their fighter 2 win, look at frazier-ali, the corner done the right thing for frazier wen he woz unfit 2 fight..

  • the ref should have stopped it when watson coulkd barely walk out of his corner at the start of the 12th

  • i read in eubanks book, that he actually accepted he coundnt beat watson from the 6th round, and that he carried on fighting to take a his beating like a man (his words). he said when watson put him down, when his knee touched the ground his body completly recovered.
